I think Sony played it smart. Making available both the XM4 and XM5 means you can decide on what suits you and which omissions in the new iteration bug you most.
Yeah, I guess that's how you do a proper follow up to an already perfect product. There is not much to improve upon in the M4s so Sony made M5s slightly different to give the same quality but give customers better options that suit their style more. Very clever on their part!
I don't think they did. It's released too soon after the XM4 and is only an incremental upgrade at best (and not even in every way, some ways it's even a small step back). I think Sony made a mistake and instead should have focused on bringing the best sound quality possible for an affordable price. The WF-1000XM3's still competes with the best wireless earbuds you can currently get for just a fraction of the price (you can get them for $100 or less as opposed to the other good ones being $250 or more). With the price these cost, I don't want to pick between comfort, stylish design, features and sound quality. I need it to excel in every single way.
Wow the mics really improve on the xm5. I'm going to wait until the price lowers in a year. However I'm excited that they are pushing innovations even while being inspired by Bose.
It's my pet peeve how bad Bluetooth headphone mics sound, in general though. Where are the next gen codecs? Why does everything sound like telephone quality 😞

The XM3 an XM4 are basically the same though (same chipset with a few new features like auto pause, and slightly different tuning). So realistically, even if you have the older XM3, you still don't need to upgrade.
I got an xm3 till now .wont be changing anytime soon esp with the more expensive xm5..might just change to other brands which can offer better pricing n specs..
Yeah, multipoint is not as useful if you plan on using LDAC. Noise cancelling is about the same as far as I could tell from reviewers between xm4 and xm3. I'd be curious to see if the XM5 is meaningfully better at noise cancellation.
I nearly bought the XM3s at a discount when the XM4s came out, but I'm glad I got the XM4s. They have better features, particularity pausing playback automatically when you take them off, which I use every single time I wear them.
Bought my XM4 a couple of months ago and I love them so this upgrade won’t be for me. The big case is also kind of a dealbreaker - but I’m really happy with choosing Sony. Been listening to a lot more music with them too.
Thank you for pointing out the fact that none of their Bluetooth Headphones work with the Bluetooth PS4 and or PS5. I honestly thought that I was the only one that thought that was stupid/intentional on Sony's part and it's different business units.
It’s because Sony also sells the headphones that are specifically made for the ps5. If they made these to work for PS5, no one would buy the other ones. Definitely smart and very intentional.

I have the XM4000s, I love them, also got them for $200 with my employee discount 😜 seeing the new ones I feel no regrets on not waiting, I know the new ones work slightly better in most ways but mine still are world class and honestly I like the style of mine 1000 times more than the boxy bland look of the new ones, plus mine are foldable and packed in this carry case it's like half the size of the new one's case 😅
I own the mx5s and I personally love the case they come it. It’s sleek, beautiful and is relatively thin. I can slip it in a book bag, gym bag but most of the time I just carry it around because I love the look of it. Love this new design
Upgraded from the 2015 model Sony MDR-ZX770BN. Definitely a big step up. Audio is still a bit meh, to be honest, so don't expect too much. Tuning with the equalizer does improve it quite a bit. Just remember they are travel headphones not audiophile.

thank you for shedding light on the ridiculous fact that these don't pair with the PS5... as an XM4 and PS5 owner this is one of my biggest criticisms.
I passed on upgrading from the XM3's to the XM4's because the only difference I cared about was the fact that the XM4's could connect to more than one bluetooth device. However, after a few of years of pairing every time I switched devices I decided to consider the XM5's once they were released. While I understand the points of those who will stay with the prior generations, there are enough changes for me to make the jump. Additionally, to my ears the XM5's were noticeably better in that mic comparison.
Just picked these up and I've been loving them so far. Love having the transparency mode and USB-C which my Bose 35 iis lacked. Just replaced the cushions with ones from Wicked Cushions which are far more comfortable and higher quality.
I connect my XM 4 to my Sony a80j oled to play on the ps5. I notice a slight lag in some instances but it's mostly fine for gaming. I'll wait to upgrade 😌
One of the best features about the xm3 and 4 was the ability to fold, also the xm5 earcups fold facing up if you rest them on your neck. Which isnt really a big deal but like... Why?
I had the XM5 and returned them for the XM4 for the same reason 2:01. I travel often overseas and the XM5 case was ridiculously too large for my carry-on.
I appreciate the honest review. XM4s are bass forward and I love it, compared to the QC45 I have. Im thinking the XM5s match and then beat Bose by offering crisp detail with more bass. Best quality Ive heard comes from the Airpods Max but the drawbacks to portability (case, battery) and price make it an easier to pass.
I'm gonna get personal here. I bought the XM4 two years ago and I fell in love when I found out what was Hi Res. I even bought a NW-A105 walkman, and, when I'm sitting on my computer, I use a DAC PHA-1A. I never use my XM4 wireless (perhaps during a call or playing videogames). I use Deezer Hifi as streaming service. I really care about noise cancelling, but I care the most about sound quality. I don't see XM5 has improved in audio quality, so, for me, its not worthy to buy these, yet, if I got to use them, I would not miss the chance. Having said that, It would be very interesting if Sony would merge these NC technologies with some other ones related to audio quality, such as balanced audio (Those MDR-Z7MR2 or some other), among others. I would definitely consider to get broken so I could acquire these hypothetical headphones!
The mics are pretty damn great. For me, they sounded a lot better than all the competition (in your quite office). If they can put similar mic tech in their in ear NC headphones, that would be perfect

I miss my Bose 700. For me, the comfort, Mic Quality, Sound and looks were far superior to my current XM4's. But the XM4's have much more reliable Bluetooth switching for multiple devices and software that works. Can someone make Bose 700 with Sony Software? :D
Yep. I like the way the XM5s look but other than that I still can't see a compelling reason to upgrade from the XM3s. They sound great, eliminate all the noise, are mad comfortable and last ages.
I bought the XM4s one month ago. I would have absolutely waited if I had known they would be releasing XM5s. XM4s are perfect, of course, but I would have waited for the price drop and bought them a bit cheaper.

we have to admit that Mic on Sony xm5 is the best among other options tested here, but I guess you should test them at street, but not only in quiet room...
I got the xm5. Don’t worry about the sound in my opinion. It is good. The bass is fine don’t stress that either. The ANC is stellar but it sometimes changes when you don’t want it. Don’t worry too much. The fit was really comfortable for many but not for me. I’m not sure why. I have big ears and a round chin and it hurt abit after awhile. Get them from a retailer you can do returns and try them for a week
Yes. I wear a 7-5/8 fitted hat. I like these more than my Skull Crushers as far as comfort. My skull crushers have better performance in the rock,metal, rap. The bass is much better than my Sonys. My Sonys have better SQ
Xm5 and Max sounded best to me. Bose 700 always get high marks but sound muffled to me. I have the XM4 and despite zero reason to get the XM5, as you put it, I have order a pair. A little fun never hurt anyone.
Why is it that non of the reviews on this headset talk about the experience to connect it to a computer. A lot of people are in meetings in Teams etc and if the XM5 is still using the same set of codecs as the XM4 (SBC or LDAC only) then the support for both mac and windows will fall back to HSP where the audio quality is so horrible that it is unusable. Other manufacturers that support the aptX protocols do behave a bit better at least but the last model to use aptX was the XM3 so I am stuck on those.
Used XM4's 2 years. Gave them to my family, bought XM5's returned them after 2 days because of volume adjustment lagging and auto NC optimizer. Bought another XM4's. Best headphones ever! They just work

Is the xm5 case really THAT much bigger than the 4s? Maybe it's just the photos not doing it justice, but it seems the size difference really isn't massive between the two cases

I never get how some want a premium design, like what does it matter as long as it clearly works. Like yeah the m5 are plastic but that makes them plastic. I wear my m3s for hours upon hours and it's so lightweight I never feel uncomfortable with them on at all! The M3 only weigh 254 while the airpods max weigh over 380 grams. For headphones it should be about comfort over style.
I'm glad the xm5 headphones can't fold. That is one reason why I'd like to purchase them. The xm4 headphones felt so cheap and the earcups could swivel around so much, I was afraid of accidentally breaking them. If I had just gotten another case, I would have kept my sony xm4 headphones instead of returning them to amazon. However, I might pick up a set of these during Black Friday, or maybe grab them from Ebay. I have found some pretty good deals from there. I like that the sony headphone app is accessible with voiceover, the apple built in screen reader. The different EQ settings are also very nice. Thanks for a good review. I'm also glad that call quality has improved. That is also one reason why I got the bose nc700 headphones. I know things like audio dramas, or described movies from Disney+ would sound great on the new Sony headphones.
You nailed the explanation of the sound quality compared to the XM4s. I listen to a lot of hip hop and reggaeton, music with a lot of beats, and the 5's cannot match the 4s and 3s in that segment. I have to play around with the equalisers a lot to get near to that level. However, mids and highs sound clearer. Ultimately, I think I am gonna keep the 5s as I got them for a really good price

Having said that, It would be very interesting if Sony would merge these NC technologies with some other ones related to audio quality, such as balanced audio (Those MDR-Z7MR2 or some other), among others. I would definitely consider to get broken so I could acquire these hypothetical headphones!

The mics are pretty damn great. For me, they sounded a lot better than all the competition (in your quite office). If they can put similar mic tech in their in ear NC headphones, that would be perfect

I miss my Bose 700.
For me, the comfort, Mic Quality, Sound and looks were far superior to my current XM4's.
But the XM4's have much more reliable Bluetooth switching for multiple devices and software that works.
Can someone make Bose 700 with Sony Software? :D

Yep. I like the way the XM5s look but other than that I still can't see a compelling reason to upgrade from the XM3s. They sound great, eliminate all the noise, are mad comfortable and last ages.
If there's one thing I wished xm3s have, its the multiconnectivity

I bought the XM4s one month ago. I would have absolutely waited if I had known they would be releasing XM5s.
XM4s are perfect, of course, but I would have waited for the price drop and bought them a bit cheaper.

Disappointing they can't be folded and take up so much space. I think I personally would still go for the XM4s just based off of this one feature...
we have to admit that Mic on Sony xm5 is the best among other options tested here, but I guess you should test them at street, but not only in quiet room...

I got the xm5. Don’t worry about the sound in my opinion. It is good. The bass is fine don’t stress that either. The ANC is stellar but it sometimes changes when you don’t want it. Don’t worry too much. The fit was really comfortable for many but not for me. I’m not sure why. I have big ears and a round chin and it hurt abit after awhile. Get them from a retailer you can do returns and try them for a week

Yes. I wear a 7-5/8 fitted hat. I like these more than my Skull Crushers as far as comfort. My skull crushers have better performance in the rock,metal, rap. The bass is much better than my Sonys. My Sonys have better SQ
The difference in mic from m4 to m5 is massive.
Xm5 and Max sounded best to me. Bose 700 always get high marks but sound muffled to me. I have the XM4 and despite zero reason to get the XM5, as you put it, I have order a pair. A little fun never hurt anyone.

Why is it that non of the reviews on this headset talk about the experience to connect it to a computer. A lot of people are in meetings in Teams etc and if the XM5 is still using the same set of codecs as the XM4 (SBC or LDAC only) then the support for both mac and windows will fall back to HSP where the audio quality is so horrible that it is unusable.
Other manufacturers that support the aptX protocols do behave a bit better at least but the last model to use aptX was the XM3 so I am stuck on those.
Used XM4's 2 years. Gave them to my family, bought XM5's returned them after 2 days because of volume adjustment lagging and auto NC optimizer. Bought another XM4's. Best headphones ever! They just work

I have the XB900N noise-cancelling Extra Bass headphones, & I was considering upgrading to the XM4 model, but now with this new model that makes the decision for me a little more complicated lol. I’m leaning towards the XM4s bc of the fact that they fold in so they’re more space efficient in more bags & the midnight blue color makes me want to get them

I was thrilled to see the design of the new Sony because I have just bought my 2nd XM4.
Is the xm5 case really THAT much bigger than the 4s? Maybe it's just the photos not doing it justice, but it seems the size difference really isn't massive between the two cases

Do these work with smart watches? I also don't want to carry a phone around at the gym. Soutions? Apparently they are also susceptible to water and sweat damage if used at the gym. What are the best over the ear wireless headphones (not buds) for the gym?
I never get how some want a premium design, like what does it matter as long as it clearly works. Like yeah the m5 are plastic but that makes them plastic. I wear my m3s for hours upon hours and it's so lightweight I never feel uncomfortable with them on at all! The M3 only weigh 254 while the airpods max weigh over 380 grams. For headphones it should be about comfort over style.
Are these headphones as comfortable as Bose QC 35 and 45s?

I'm glad the xm5 headphones can't fold. That is one reason why I'd like to purchase them. The xm4 headphones felt so cheap and the earcups could swivel around so much, I was afraid of accidentally breaking them. If I had just gotten another case, I would have kept my sony xm4 headphones instead of returning them to amazon. However, I might pick up a set of these during Black Friday, or maybe grab them from Ebay. I have found some pretty good deals from there. I like that the sony headphone app is accessible with voiceover, the apple built in screen reader. The different EQ settings are also very nice. Thanks for a good review. I'm also glad that call quality has improved. That is also one reason why I got the bose nc700 headphones. I know things like audio dramas, or described movies from Disney+ would sound great on the new Sony headphones.
XM5 sounds the best followed by Bose. It's quite impressive Sony managed to fix XM4's biggest weakness.

You nailed the explanation of the sound quality compared to the XM4s. I listen to a lot of hip hop and reggaeton, music with a lot of beats, and the 5's cannot match the 4s and 3s in that segment. I have to play around with the equalisers a lot to get near to that level. However, mids and highs sound clearer. Ultimately, I think I am gonna keep the 5s as I got them for a really good price
