  • In this video I cover my experiences/tips and advice on raising a half Thai child in Thailand. I start at the beginning from the birth, paperwork you might need through to the university years. Educating your child in Thailand can take on many different forms and I cover some of the main ones including my experiences up in a Northern rural part of the country.

Burahpa English Programme School (B.E.S.T.) is a decent school if you're in the Chonburi/Pattaya/Jomtien area. Pretty affordable in comparison to International Schools. www.burapha.ac.th/main/

@@jamesabroad8589 My story was a bit unique but I doubt was the first time it happened. My Thai mum passed away when I was a kid and living in London my parents hadn't registered my birth at Thai embassy. Then going through process of applying for ID card a couple years ago had to dig up paperwork from her cremation certificate off the council in London all the way to her old documents from a place she left in 1973. The whole process aged me but I will say that the Thai consulate in London were one of the most helpful parts of it, they often get unfairly slated by many. Keep up the good work mate, the channels great.

Hi James outstanding vlog exactly what most parents are looking for. We looked and toured around REPS Rayong English Programme School in Phala, Ban Chang District, Rayong. Headmaster asked if we just wanted English speaking class we are going for 60% English 40% Thai. We are going to be living there so important she learns Thai, Chinese and Spanish. Every language is a degree plus the school gives a discount if you opt for Thai lessons. She talks Thai Spanglish already which is so cute.

Patana alumni class 2014, luk khrung Thai/Eng - I share a lot of sentiments with all this. Definitely feel like my Thai language and general knowledge/history were definitely impaired by my heavily-leaning British curriculum I had to live by. I hold little resentments (had me leave to Canada upon graduation), and I've always had to put emphasis on outside learning of Thai. N the existential identity issues on who, what n where we stand on things morally, culturally etc.

Great video Mr. James. I would like to add a couple of points myself. As regards to education, my 5 yr old daughter also has not experienced any racism, she is very happy and popular at her current private school (Salasat) and she is on her way into Mater Dei school which is one of the top girls' schools in Thailand and I couldn't be happier. A lot of people have a negative attitude towards Thai education. I personally don't, if you're willing to pay a bit extra in a city like Bangkok they will receive a good education.
I also like that you taught your daughter how to play musical instruments, I am tone deaf and could never do it, but I have signed her up for ballet and figure skating classes. It's important they have hobbies.
Another point on the travelling part. I also have been to the UK with my daughter (minus the mother). At the Thai immigration, on my way to the UK they DID pull me aside and ask to see written permission from her mother as well as her birth certificate to see if my name was on there. So you MUST do this.

@@jamesabroad8589 you're most welcome. Credit where credit is due.
Some additional info you may find interesting (having read back my original comment), Dad was in the Army, for all my childhood and formative years, so that meant lots of moves (Malawi, UK x2, Germany x5, Hong Kong) which translated into 6x schools, 2x colleges, 1 x Uni; no sense of 'home' (very common amongst forces children).
Hence the perspective of contrast when the well considered stability and thoughtfulness when considering your decision making regarding your daughter's education and development.
The end result for both options- graduation. The route very different obviously.

We’ve always lived outside Thailand (in the UK) and did the whole Sunday school thing at a Thai temple in London for a few years - was mostly good for mixing with other ‘double’ children as few of them seemed to progress much with Thai language. @@jamesabroad8589 it was the Thai temple in Wimbledon (Wat Buddhapadipa). They do - or at least did a few years back, plus not sure the impact of cv19 - both Thai dance class and Thai school each Sunday. Dance was a hour or so I think and then the actual school after was in classrooms on the temple gardens and started each week in the temple with a talk from a monk. Can’t recall how long classes were, maybe 3-4hrs. She stopped a good few years back and then there wasn’t really a cost; a nominal fee or donation each year and then they liked parents to help out around the temple (e.g. cleaning, etc..).

Fair play to you James your a great dad. My daughter is also half Thai and I hope to move to Thailand when she finishes secondary school In 2022... It's just me and her as I got divorced a long time ago. My daughter speaks very little Thai so I'm hoping the Move to Thailand will help her with her Thai culture and language... I'm encouraging her to do TEFL course before we leave as I believe this might be a great way for her to get employment as she has her Thai ID card. Then I just need to worry about myself getting a retirement visa. I really appreciate your time you put into you video. Best wishes to you and your family ..

There was a large study done in the USA around 2004 concerning what made children "successful." It was actually intended to show that private or charter schools were superior. But in the end, after they accounted for all the variables, the one driver of "success" was the mother's education. It didn't matter if you were rich or poor, went to a fancy school or a poor government school, the mother's education determined the child's success.
Obviously, one wouldn't want to overstate this, but I think you have a good chance of educating your children regardless of where you send them if the parents read to their children, talk to them, play with them, etc.

Though mixed race kids are admired here, for their beauty only really, you are correct when you say they are looked at as being different or not Thai. I know many mixed race teenagers and young adults and they all say the same, Thais look at them at not being Thai they feel closer to farangs as they look at them as being Thai and a foreigner. Until however that mixed race young adult is a superstar or sporting hero and all of a sudden they are Thai again.

Just discovered your TH-cam. Great video and tips for Farang like me ( A father of 4 Mixed-race children ) 3 sons and 1 daughter. My 3 sons are living in Norway while I was in Thailand with my only daughter a year ago. She went to 2 primary schools that are indeed amazingly cheap and only a few minutes walk from home. Unfortunately, she started to develop depression at a young age because of racism and more, the first school forced my daughter to dye her hair black because her natural hair colour is blonde. My wife got mad so she moved our daughter to the second school. almost a year later, my daughter came back home and asked me who is her mother, I was shocked, she said her science teacher told the whole class that my daughter is 100% Farang because of her fair skin, blond hair, and height which opposite to my wife. The Australian mate who taught there told me that my daughter got bullied about her skin and the same silly topic about her mother by saying things like Farang kee-nok (bird poo), motherless, and stole her book. She remained silent for years without telling me anything, even though she's close to me but she's also an introvert. I brought her to Bangkok for therapy and the psychiatrist told me that my daughter has developed suicidal thoughts. Again, we moved our daughter to an International school, the teacher announced about my daughter mental health, people made fun of it. She took A-level and IGCSE exams and graduated high school at 16. We moved to London for her university and I'm glad that she is happy. I discussed with my neighbour once and his 2 daughters went through the same thing, He even paid 200k for a basketball court fund, been 6 years now with an empty field. Some of my friends are happy with their children and schools (both Thai and International) I'm glad for them and their children that they're all doing great. You've got to find what is best for you and your family and appreciate life.

Some international schools here are rediculously priced in my opinion. There are good ones of course, but some seem to be just money making machines.👍🍺

You can homeschool or distance learning program. There’re international schools in Thailand offer classes to homeschoolers as well. We’re planning to take early retirement and temporary move to Thailand for ministry and our son can learn more about Thai culture on his paternal side. We currently homeschool him so we will homeschool and enroll him 2 days at a private Christian school.

for someone planning on placing a child in schooling, what would be an average yearly baht cost for some reasonable schooling?

It really depends on where you live but I would say if in Bangkok or Chiang Mai between 200k-300k/year for decent government/international schools.🙏👍

You did fine job super dad. So what is it that you do for a living that allowed you to stay in Thailand for as long as you did?

Just a bit of teaching early on and a few things in the UK made it possible to live here. Wife also has a good job which helps.

I did't ask for the video but it is very much appreciated. Hope to be blessed with a child with my girlfriend soon. About the chewing gum, I think I missed a video because I didn't see anything weird.

Hi, I saw your channel on the phuket page. Question. I have a child from a Thai lady. The birth certificate has another mans name on it. is it easy for the mom to take out his name and add my name to it? she lives up north :)

I would both go to her local Amphur to see what can be done. As I said in the video, rules can be different from district to district. Contacting a family law practice is also a possibility. DNA tests might be required. Good luck Tony.👍🙏
