  • The Tatung Einstien was a computer system developed in Bradford West Yorkshire by Taiwanese company Tatung and built in Telford. Released in 1983 it never achieved a great deal of popularity, but was quite widely used to develop software for other 8-bit systems.

I got a Tatung Einstein with the monitor for Christmas I think in 84. I lived on the included Konami games disk with Yie AR Kung Fu, Comic bakery and kings valley. That’s all I had. Games were so hard to get hold of! That same Christmas I got a Raleigh computer bike too! I think my parents must of won the lottery that year!

    Thank you.
I haven't seen Roverball for nearly 30 years, lol.
There's one game I really miss. I'd love to see it one more time.
    Have you got Gronks?
That game was eons ahead of it's time.

One of my cousin has a Tatung Einstein, he learned to program on it and now works as a programmer.

I still have my Einstein although it's not been turned on in years. I bought it in a car boot sale in 1990 for £30. Had to fix the power supply because it had a dry joint that caused the machine to drop into the ROM-based Monitor program. It had a lot going for it really: 80K RAM, built in machine code monitor, 3" disk drive, BASIC loaded from disk thus freeing up the memory for software... The DOS even had password protected files.
My favourite games on it were Time Trap, Starquake and Lazy Jones. I spent a ridiculous amount of time on those, although I also played a fair bit of Oh Mummy!, Les Flics, Bootman, Disco Dan, Punchy and Chuckie Egg. Chuckie Egg annoyed me a little since I was so used to playing the Dragon 32 version and while the levels were laid out the same the birds moved differently and jumps I used on the Dragon version wouldn't work on the Einstein.
Fu Kung in Las Vegas was undoubtably the hardest to play. The jumping mechanic was terrible (he went diagonally up, then diagonally down with no control) and it meant that some jumps had to be done with pixel-perfect precision.

Highway Patrol: Still one of my favorite games on Speccy.

The main spaceship in Maxima bears more than passing resemblance to the vessel (Liberator?) in Blakes 7... "Escape from Merlin 8" was also released on the MTX 512 but under a different title IIRC.

+CaptainCorleone actually some of the games was stolen from Memotech, and released without permission from the programmers :)

Looks like MSX or Colecovision. It uses the same graphics chip, right?

Minor comment: most of the internet believes Tatung to be Taiwanese, and Wikipedia thinks the Einstein was designed in Bradford. Are you confident about a Hong Kong connection?

I'm not confident at all, I'll go with what the rest of the internet says! I've updated the description accordingly.

I guess this computer's game content suffered from lack of good programmers.
