Let's take a look at what Ray Dalio's portfolio looks like as of 2021.
    __________________________________
Ray Dalio. I’m sure you all know who he is, he’s the founder & manager of the largest hedge fund in the world Bridgewater. Dalio’s one of the most followed investors in modern times & in this video we’re going to reveal his portfolio at Bridgewater. I want to break each investment down piece by piece, tell you a bit about them, and see how his portfolio balances out. Let’s get into it…
    Investment 1: SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust
So the first investment is what’s known as an ETF. An etf is just a group of different stocks bunched together. In this case it’s the S & P 500. The S & P 500 is an index of 500 very large USA companies. These stocks are a good indicator of the entire USA market as a whole.
So straight away Dalio is exposing his portfolio to companies like Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Tesla, Alphabet, Berkshire Hathaway, Johnson & Johnson, those huge American companies.
This is the largest investment of Dalio’s portfolio making up 11.9% of it. He owns $1.38 billion dollars of the S & P 500, straight away allowing for diversification and the lowering of risk…
Investment 2: Vanguard FTSE Emerging Markets ETF
Now again his second largest position is an etf, but this is completely different. The vanguard emerging markets etf, instead of holding groups
of large USA companies, they own companies throughout emerging markets. In China, Brazil, Taiwan, and South Africa.
The etfs 10 largest holdings from 1 to 10 are, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, Tencent, Alibaba, Meituan, Naspers, Ping Insurance, Reliance Industries, JD.com, China Construction Bank & last is NIO the electric car company.
This ETF makes up 5.7% of Dalios portfolio over at Bridgewater a total value of $659 million dollars. What you’ll notice, right from the start Dalio is diversifying across the globe. His biggest investments are in the USA, but second is those high growth emerging markets around the world…
    Investment 3: SPDR Gold Trust
Anyone who has been a Dalio follower for a while will not be surprised by this investment. Dalio likes gold. One of his famous quotes is “If you don't own Gold, you know neither history nor economics.”.
And he’s put his money where his mouth is, the SPDR gold trust makes up his 3rd largest investment, at 4.6% of his portfolio. His total investment is $532 million dollars of Bridgewaters assets…
For any of you guys out there looking to own the SPDR gold trust, the ticker symbol is GLD, the expense ratio for holding this is 0.4% a year, and even I Cooper have owned this investment for some time now…
    Investment 4: Walmart
Now we start getting into the individual stocks that Dalio has picked out…
His biggest individual stock position is Walmart, ticker symbol WMT on the nyse exchange. This makes up 3.8% of his portfolio, valued at $443.8 million dollars…
Walmart as we all know it’s the chain of discount department stores, scattered throughout America, Canada, Mexico & a couple of other countries. Altogether they have 11,443 stores, bringing in $548 billion dollars of total revenue, making them the largest company in the world based on that figure.
This stock exposes the portfolio nicely to a steady part of the market, which is retail. Retail, that’s a sector that’s been going on since humans started trading, and it will continue to do so…
The stock currently sells for $132 a share, generating yearly earnings of $4.75. Their dividend is $2.20 per share giving them a nice 1.65% annual dividend return…

How long until a full recovery? How are other people in the same market raking in over $450k gains within months, I'm really just confused at this point.

Well, you're right in a way, but in defense of Dalio's portfolio, he could sell individual stocks from this portfolio at opportune times, whereas with VOO or VTI you could only sell shares of the ETF, so selling stocks at good and bad times equally. You might lose some value on cyclical stocks like that. But its true the overall the results would be pretty similar. VOO and VTI (or similar products) are easily the best choice for 99% of retail investors.

Here’s the thing about manually diversifying by investing in a lot of individual stocks vs. investing in an ETF. Although the market as a whole, tracked by the ETF, will go up or down, individual stocks will also go up or down differently from that global average. Selling an ETF to realize capital gains means you are forced to sell some underlying stocks at a time when they might not be performing very well. If you invest in individual stocks, this gives you greater liquidity, and you can sell cyclical stocks when they’re performing well, to maximize capital gains. Of course, the caveat is that ETFs will usually be far more diversified than what you could build yourself. Still, something to keep in mind.

Those are equity (stock) ETF's which would not hold any bonds, but you can actually buy bond ETF's which hold bonds and are probably the easiest way for you to invest in bonds if you don't have a lot of money and are doing it yourself as opposed to working with a financial advisor. The problem with bonds, however, is that with today's skyrocketing inflation and record-low interest rates, most bonds and bond ETF's will effectively have a negative yield (after adjusting for inflation) unless you want to go with high-yield and/or junk bonds which are risky. Still they may be better than holding cash long term. You could look into some fixed income/bond ETF's that are inflation-protected like IVOL or LTPZ and yield around 2% - 3.5%. Keep in mind that the prices on these can fluctuate a lot, so if you are going to want to sell them anytime soon you might end up with a loss. If you hold them long-term then the dividends will most likely offset any price fluctuation. If you want a short-term alternative to holding cash then you could choose some bond ETF's that are fairly stable in price like VGSH, BSV, FISR, SCHO, STOT and yield anywhere from 0.7% to 2% - even these can have small price dips but when they do they usually come back up within a few weeks or months. Having said all of this, it might be better and easier to just hold some combination of cash and the gold (GLD) ETF referenced in the video to balance out the risk that you are taking by holding your stocks right now. Also keep in mind that you can still find many undervalued stocks that pay 3-5% or even higher dividends, especially in the consumer staples, materials, and real estate sectors which is a higher dividend than you would get from a typical bond ETF. Companies like Rio Tinto (RIO), Chevron (CVX), BHP, Dow Chemical (DOW), Pfizer (PFE), and Kraft-Heinz (KHC) are all well established and are currently paying relatively high dividends compared to the S&P 500 average which is about 1.5%.

You are completely misreading BW's portfolio and their strategy, or presenting it in a very wrong way. BW actually implemented the Equity As Bond strategy which creates a dividend-paying bond using only stocks with hedging strategies. This replaces almost all bonds managed by BW. The strategy has to combine more than hundred of stock and some options. The research was published last July on Daily Observation.

I'm assuming it does not, his portfolio does however have a lot stronger liquidity and a very low-risk profile compared to the S&P 500. I have not checked if he beats the S&P 500, but I assume he does not. There might be a chance he actually does, but I'm not really certain. However, if he does beat the S&P 500 index he might have the best portfolio in the world. considering his low-risk profile and his investments into high liquidity markets.

    • @maxfenig8460
      @maxfenig8460 3 ปีที่แล้ว

If you think we are approaching the end of the bull market (like Ray Dalio does) then you don't want to be trying to 'beat the S&P'. Anything that beats the S&P during a bull market will mostly likely crash harder than the S&P when the party ends. You want to be buying stocks that are more stable (consumer staples like WMT, PG), undervalued (foreign/emerging markets) and things that can actually go up during a bear market (like gold). If you want something that beats the S&P then you can buy the NASDAQ ETF (QQQ) or one of Cathy Wood's ARK ETF's but just keep in mind that it could crash hard at any time and then take many years to come back up. Also, keep in mind that there are no 'safe' investments anymore, and indexes that have performed well in the past might not be the best choice for the next 10 years. The Fed has effectively painted itself into a corner by recklessly printing money and lowering interest rates for 40+ years, and will not be able to save the stock markets the next time they crash because interest rates simply cannot be lowered any more than they already have been. Considering inflation, real interest rates are already below zero.
