OPINION FROM SOMEONE WHO WORKED WITH GUINEA PIGS FOR FOUR YEARS. 1st off: GREAT little hutch you have! and good on you for giving them space =] As for the saw dust/shavings, its not just a UK thing, people in the states use it as well. There are some setbacks definitely worth considering though. As the name suggests, it is very dusty. Not only is it messier and offer less odor control BUT it can be potentially dangerous. Guineas have a pretty sensitive respiratory system, and can catch infections quite easily. ( One thing to remember they are prey not predator. So unless you know what to look for you may not know they are even ill until they just can't hide it anymore. It's just an instinct they have. ) And the dust from the shavings can irritate their lungs or clog their nose. Fleece is great! so is " Care Fresh" or any brand similar to it. If you choose to stay with the saw dust use Aspen wood or other hardwoods. Pine & Cedar is not a good choice, The phenol & oil from the wood dose not agree with guineas at all. NOT saying your not a good guinea pig owner for using the dust, so please don't take it that way. Just saying there are better options out there rather then dust.
I do Animal care & management at college and we have a LOT of guinea pigs so we use a lot of different bedding, It's good to switch up the bedding for them so they don't get bored and so they can experience different bedding! shavings(sawdust), shredded newspaper, straw, are all good bedding. be aware that shavings & straw may irritate their eyes but then again it could be fine for them. Straw & newspaper is obviously something good for their actual bed as they can get wrapped up in it to get warm whereas shavings is something to cover their whole enclosure. But one of our guinea doesn't get along with shavings at all so their whole enclosure is basically shredded newspaper which obviously doesn't look the best but it is the best for their health! :) I don't find fleece is a good bedding as it doesn't particularly keep them warm and doesn't absorb well! Also, hay is essential for a Guinea Pig’s health and well-being so defiantly make sure they always have constant access to hay! You probably already knew that but if you didn't.. you do now! ;) Hope this mini paragraph helped you Zoe! :) xxxxx
I have been through every type of bedding known and by far the cheapest and best so far, would be Vetbed. It's basically a type of fleece that draws the urine down to the bottom layer so the piggies keep dry. You would just need newspaper underneath (fine if they eat it) which can be changed daily or every other day (depending on how many piggies you have) and the poops can just be hoovered up or shook out. Once you buy the vetbed, you can then wash it whenever it gets dirty. It's brill. Just be sure to wash either with no detergent or non-bio and NO softener as this ruins the effect. xx
Before you fill their home with bedding, line their home with plenty of layers of newspaper, then pour the bedding on top. Makes cleaning their cage so much easier. They are so cute. I miss that little shrill noise they make.
At one point my family had about 15 guinea pigs because the pet store lied about the sex of three that we bought. Safe to say I know a ton about them not but they love fleece :) they will make little beds and pull the fleece wherever they want to take it. I recommend two layers of fleece, one to catch poo and pee and the other as just a protector against the hut.
Zoe, I had two guinea pigs, one of which lived just over 8 years. We used some bedding from care fresh. It is much better for them. Plus they come in nice colors, light blue, pink, yellow, green. Also for guinea pigs they need something to nibble on, like a wooden block. If you go to your pet store they'll have all sorts of things, even flavored! This will keep their teeth nice and short. Other wise their teeth can grow up and hurt their poor mouths. Also make sure you're trimming their nails regularly or they can over grow and curl down and stab into their paws :(
I use fleece and sawdust for my pigs, it’s great because it gives them a choice rather than just having one that they HAVE to go on. But either of the bedding is great it depends on which one works best for you.
prisha arora There was even a video of Zoella putting Percy and Pippin in the bath tub.... It makes me wonder what Circe would have done to Percy if Annabeth left him there.
hey Zoe my guinea pig died today but watching ur videos make me feel a little bit better. Thanks and i hope u never stop TH-cam and i love u soooo much. xxx
Zoe i'm a animal care student and I've had this conversation alot of times with people, saw dust (wood chippings) is very efficient for them, its really easy to clean and very absorbent, i know i looks messy but trust me it wont harm them, you could even spruce it up from time to time if annoys you that much, haha! its the best things to use because if you covered it all in fleece you'll probably end up washing them all the time because of all the urine and faces and i'm sure you don't want to be spending all your time washing those fleeces, sorry if i dragged on, just thought id let you know!:')
This comment is pretty old but I hope you realise this is wrong; fleece is a safer and cheaper alternative to wood shavings as they can often harm their respiratory system.
Sawdust is actually not great for guinea pigs at all because even though it's dust extracted the sawdust gets into their lungs and eyes so much better to find an alternative Zoe x please like this so she can see it x
Awww they're so well looked after. I've had guinea pigs for 8 years, bedding is supposed to be HAY HAY HAY. Tons of hay. Even my vet recommends it. Saw dust can be tough on their soft little feet and as Katie says, on their lungs too. Lots of hay for them to nibble on constantly. My guineas are called Audrey and Mabel - haha. Love them.
Your Guinea pigs are so cute I love them so much. When I was a little girl, I think I was 6 I use to have 2 beautiful guinea pigs like you, I named them Machu and Picchu. I was very happy with my Guinea pigs they meant the world to me, but one day my grandparents came for a visit, they don't really like pet's so they basically told my dad to toss them away because they said guinea pigs are infected and dangerous for me to be near it. Unfortunately, my dad did what he was told to do. I was very sad, unhappy and angry at my grandparents at that time! They got what they wanted... me being miserable without them and unable to defend my poor defensive guinea pigs. I miss you Machu and Piccho, I will always remember you guys ❤ 💔.
Sawdust is the best bedding for all small animals, the one they are using looks like the stuff we sell in pets at home, which is dust-free meaning it wont get all up in their respiratory system. Plus it's super easy to clean out however if you were to use all fleece bedding it'd be a nightmare. Hay/straw is always good for bedding also, you can even put it in their box where they sleep. We also sell confetti and other safe bedding which is super comfy for them. The fleece matt you have out is good to, and they should ALWAYS have several places to hide. Also a lot of people dont know but you need to file their nails, as your set up doesnt have anywhere they can wear them down. You can put them in a box with a sheet of sand paper and let them run around for 5 mins or you can use a regular nail file. The groomroom in pets at home also do guinea pig nails, but just make sure they dont get long because it's incredibly uncomfortable for them! Always have hay and GREEN veg available, fruit should be treats, every other day not daily. Nuggets is the best food to give them, as muesli isn't good for their digestive system. Think thats most basics :)
Zoe! I loved this as i'm a pet youtuber and guinea pig owner, haha! In terms of bedding... Stick to actual bedding and not fleece... Fleece is not very hygienic, and you will notice it will smell fast! It also doesn't absorb anything... It just looks pretty really. You should try puppy pads underneath the shavings you're using at the moment, they look pretty good quality. Lucky piggies eh!? x
Our guinea pigs also started to use the ramp/ladder quite quickly. You might want to try putting a block of wood under the ladder and tape a little ramp to it so its not as steep! They will probably go down in faster than if it was steep. And maybe give them a little nudge at the top of the ladder. Xxxxx_
I live I America and I use a certain type of hay as bedding because sometimes the dust can get in their eyes. This is what most people I know use and I really suggest it. It does make it a little harder to clean but it absorbs really well.
Hey guys, Zoe was a huge inspiration for me to start uploading my own videos to TH-cam, and now that I have it would mean the world to me if anyone was to check out my channel. Thanks for reading :)
thesheepthatwentmooo I was gonna ask you to stop spamming but I accidentally clicked on your channel and you're hilarious :P Sorry, I just thought that was funny. Keep making videos! :)

Oh, I love guinea pigs. Yours are so cute!! I had 16 of them back in 2008 to 2010. I used fleece blankets and newspaper underneath and they loved it. MissGuineaPig No her cage is not small at all it's for rabbit its big.I have done my research to and c&c cage are very good cage but you don't HAVE to get one there tons of other good cages i have talk and research this all.
this is the first ever video of yours that I watched Zoe, I was looking for ideas for my guinea pigs, stumbled upon this video and somehow 3 years later I'm still watching your videos! whoop whoop
I would not suggest sawdust because small animals can easily have problems with upper respiratory infections and with sawdust even when dust extracted there can be issues with allergies and the fact that you assumably live in a humid area by the beach it can easily grow mold/fungus, etc making allergies worse. Can we have a tour of your apartment?

loved the bagel story.
I can not get over the fact that one of her guinea pigs are named Percy.
Only the Percy Jackson fandom would understand why.
prisha arora I was thinking of Percy from Harry Potter as his hair was ginger and Zoe loves Harry Potter
prisha arora There was even a video of Zoella putting Percy and Pippin in the bath tub.... It makes me wonder what Circe would have done to Percy if Annabeth left him there.
Please do a house your zoe your home looks gorgeous x
I said that to I really agree

Zoe "Oh here he comes, YES! The excitements real...why does he have no bagels?"
I love her accent and her guinea pig!
Same here I love to watch Joe's vids back in the day.

for sure fleece, so much easier when it comes to cleaning the cage
End of 2021 nearly 2022 lol, I miss zoe so much❤
I have 8 Guinea pigs and I suggest using fleece it does not smell as bad and it looks nicer!🐹
Yeah you can make themes
I use hay for their cage
+Me XOXO so do I use hay but I have two hamsters
+Me XOXO that smells
+Sanjana Deepak you don't need to buy it can be a great add-in but don't feed to mutch just as a occasional treat ! for Hamsters
Your makeup is BEAUTIFUL Zoe!
cute piggy yawn!!
house tour, house tour, house tour!! :D:D x
I personally LOVE fleece because it's cozy, cute and very affordable.
Fleece is much better for small animals because any bedding like saw dust and wood chips have dust that can cause respiratory distress. :)
true, but in their toilet they can´t have fleece can they? Also hay can be dusty but they must have it!
Awww they are very cute! I use wood-shavings and hay.
Much more natural for them and they love it. :)
Erin's Ark thank you it is do muchmore natural for them as long as you get the right kind
Can you make an apartment tour? :D
rest in peace you beautiful guinea pig👼🏽❤️
Zoe! I loved this as i'm a pet youtuber and guinea pig owner, haha! In terms of bedding... Stick to actual bedding and not fleece... You should try puppy pads underneath the shavings you're using at the moment, they look pretty good quality. Lucky piggies eh!? x
rewatching this and realizing how much zoe and alfie have changed x
The sawdust gets rid of some of the smell from when they go to the bathroom so I'd recommend it
That Guinea pig yawn though SO CUTEEEEE!!!
That guinea yawn tho❤️ so cute
Our guinea pigs also started to use the ramp/ladder quite quickly. You might want to try putting a block of wood under the ladder and tape a little ramp to it so its not as steep! They will probably go down in faster than if it was steep. And maybe give them a little nudge at the top of the ladder. Xxxxx_
I live I America and I use a certain type of hay as bedding because sometimes the dust can get in their eyes. This is what most people I know use and I really suggest it. It does make it a little harder to clean but it absorbs really well.
omg zoe you're making me really want a guinea pig now
Hey guys, Zoe was a huge inspiration for me to start uploading my own videos to TH-cam, and now that I have it would mean the world to me if anyone was to check out my channel. Thanks for reading :)
thesheepthatwentmooo I was gonna ask you to stop spamming but I accidentally clicked on your channel and you're hilarious :P Sorry, I just thought that was funny. Keep making videos! :)
*OMG your makeup is absolutely gorgeous today!!* And awww maaa gaawwd those guinea pigs were the cutest things ever!! I would totally buy guinea pigs purely so that I could do a "Cribs" style video of their house for my own channel hahahaha
lol guinea pig cribs would be the best thing ever! :-)
I just started using fleece and I love it so much more than regular bedding
Can u use fleece for bunnies?
+Jernej Sturm Yes you can. It's graet
+Jernej Sturm yes! Btw are you from Slovenia?
Oh, I love guinea pigs. Yours are so cute!! I had 16 of them back in 2008 to 2010. I used fleece blankets and newspaper underneath and they loved it. They would hop around all happy little piggies when I change the blankets every third day. Sadly had to give all of them away when my allergy to hey got worse. I miss them.
Love when one yawned that was so cute can't stop laughing xx😂😂😂😂😂😘😘😘
I know so cute 😊
That yawn scares me but its still cute :)
Please do a house tour!!

2020 and I’m wondering if percys ok
House Tour!!
I wish I had Guinea Pigs now! Definitely going to have to buy some :) Your videos are such an inspiration to why I keep making mine :D Thanks Zoe! :)
you really need ***** to do his discovery channel voice for when you film pippin and percy
I have a guinea pig and it is very easy to clean up if it's fleece instead of wood shavings
I have one too (I had him on New Year's Eve) and I'm so worried. Everyone is saying they should be at least two. Is yours okay ?
Yes he is perfectly fine
Their saying that because guinea pigs are herd animals/ social animals its best to have 2 because they can get easily depressed/ lonely
I know i have a chinch and its wayy easier to clean
dont u have to wash the fleece then cuz of the piss soaking it up?
if your debating whether to keep bedding or get fleece, you should get the fleece. I just put a garbage bag on bottom then a towel and then the fleece. They love it so much!
Will you show us your wardrobe ?
Zoe can you make a whole video just about pippin and Percy
i use fleece underneath as an absorbent layer and a bed sheet. you can buy really cheep bed sheets and put them in the cage. well you could probably use pillowcases. my cage is huge so i have to use twin to a queen size bed sheet.
wow
i want guinea pigs now
well just so you know if you ever get a guinea pig and your in the united states you need a c&c cage if you don't know what it is google it.. if your interested i've posted videos on my cage if you want to see c&c cage. but guinea pigs are really really expensive! zoella's cge is far too small.....
MissGuineaPig her cage is not to small at all, if you search the amount of room their supposed to have then you'll realise that. guinea pigs aren't expensive either and you don't need a c&c cage just 'cause your in America :S
Ummmm yes it is! i have done research! if i didn't then i wouldn't say that. yes guinea pigs ARE expensive. if you have the right requirements that YOU probably don't have then yes they are cheap. my guinea pigs have the requirements they need a huge cage and a quality pellet with the lowest calcium possible. i what kind of cage do you have and what kind of pellets? do some research! MissGuineaPig No her cage is not small at all it's for rabbit its big.I have done my research to and c&c cage are very good cage but you don't HAVE to get one there tons of other good cages i have talk and research this all.
Percy's little tongue at 3:41 is just the cutest
Will you do your house tour when you'll finish it completely? ^^'
Hungry Zoe is me everyday
why don't you do any videos on the gunieapigs anymore?
Guinea pigs you mean
Yh
ikr! There are more videos on Nala then her first 2 guinea pigs
yeah since she got nala shehasnt been doing videos on the gunieapigs
Iman Norris Yup, I mean I love Nala but it seems the spotlight is always on her, Its now unlikely to see a appearance of the Guinea's
this is the first ever video of yours that I watched Zoe, I was looking for ideas for my guinea pigs, stumbled upon this video and somehow 3 years later I'm still watching your videos! whoop whoop
I'm not trying to be creepy but will you do a "house tour"?
I was gonna ask the same thing! Her house just looks so pretty from what it shown in the videos.
Use carefresh, it's more expensive but easier to clean and more comfortable :)
How can you drink a bagel? Aren't they something like donuts?
Came back after watching ur recent vlog about Pippin. RIP Pippin ❤💜💜😭
YAY more guinea pig vids!!
I would not suggest sawdust because small animals can easily have problems with upper respiratory infections and with sawdust even when dust extracted there can be issues with allergies and the fact that you assumably live in a humid area by the beach it can easily grow mold/fungus, etc making allergies worse. In the states there is something called care fresh that is made with less allergenic ingredients maybe there is something like that there or the fleece that you were talking about.
RIP Pippin, have fun in carrot heaven.
i love a couple thins about guinea pigs
1.their mouth
2.they are so cute
3.their yarning
and number
3.how funny they are
Saw dust or shavings are really bad for guinea pigs and bunnies. It's bad for their lungs. Yes, fleece is the best bedding i think. It's super soft too.
Remember lots of hay Zoe! =)
Your guinea pigs are adorable!
//Aria
ive been using saw dust for 4 years and my guinea pigs are all fine. Im form uk and i think sawdust is better
Not necessariliy. Sorry if i spelt tht wrong. The pet store told me tht the specialized sawdust and straw is ok for them bcus the dust has been reduced significantly
