One of Joan's best dramatic films with an excellent supporting cast. Love the theme tune, the high drama throughout and the operatic feel. Some amazingly lavish costumes! A real work of art by Nicholas Ray.

Johnny Guitar is now a classic movie of its own genre. Martin cleverly succeeds to depict quality of this movie. But, there is one missing point in his analysis and that is a fantastic movie theme of this product which stood taste of time for decades and is still fresh and exciting whenever heard.

I was 12 years old when this movie was released, even at that age I could see it was more than just a western. Sometimes I wonder if it had been released by a big major movie studio, other than Republic, what kind of reviews it would have received?

very much ahead of its time, pure fascination, though it always bothered me how obvious the color was used in this film, still a masterpiece IMO, crawford elevates the whole thing to maddening heights

juan altredo This is a perfect example of the misunderstanding and underappreciation of Crawford's career. So many of her films are overlooked, while being excellent cinema that she carries. Sometimes people need a slap back into reality that only a director and film historian like Scorsese can provide.

Nicholas Ray existed at a time of McCarthyism when many of his colleagues were being blacklisted. Whether consciously or not this film is partially about mob rule by McCarthy and his bullies. Beautiful, stunning movie.

Interesting how history has proven McCarthy right. Today's Left is exactly the kind of authoritarian, collectivist evil he fought against.

Superb film. Scorsese's takes on films, his extensive knowledge and interest beyond Anglophone films, are precious. I was delighted he supported an online film world cup, to showcase different national cinemas, i organised.

Note that the shadow behind Scorsese imitates the shadow behind Joan Crawford near the end at the Kid's cabin (in the bright yellow shirt) when she confronts McCambridge.

The empty dining room that we see in the background at Vienna's, with the beautiful hutches full of blue and white dishes (use of the color blue Mr. Scorsese); is this intriguing setting some carefully nuanced reference to Mildred Pierce by Nicholas Ray as a tribute to Joan Crawford, who was his lover during the filming of Johnny Guitar in Sedona? Ray also shows us a close up of a blue and white coffee cup in the hand of Sterling Hayden. Do we see elements of Frank Lloyd Wright in the architecture of Vienna's; e.g., in the staircase and the way the structure is built into the living rock?

Local established wealth disparages and tries to murder a proprietor who dares stake and build a claim in the promised land. All you need to be hated is new. Of course there's the love story. The antagonist actress bares an incredibly rabid side to the protagonist Vienna. Matching acting chops with Joan Crawford is a tall order!

Can't believe this historical great of cinema is being cheated out of wide theatrical releases anymore and is being reduced to a streaming exclusive director. I haven't really seen any of his films, but I've definitely heard of him, and it seems that the film industry is doing whatever it can to ensure that the cinematic greatness of these big time directors remains in the past.
Can't have the present upstaging our 80s and 90s nostalgia.

He described Marvel as not being Cinematic. Well which one had a Cinematic release? Hollywood is ensuring that only MegaBusters have a chance at the Box Office anymore, and it's not right. Don't get me wrong, I love Marvel, but that's not the only thing I want to see on the Big Screen.
Forget the Pandemic, this is what was happening before.

I don't really follow the Western Genre, so this film just seemed like a normal film to me with an abnormally (for the time) strong woman. It didn't meet or deny my expectations, they were just characters with a story to be told.
I guess if we're going on the Western side of things, there wasn't any train chases.

Marty is great, but he's totally out to lunch on this one. Nick Ray is one of the great Hollywood directors, and has never gotten the respect in his own country he deserves, but JOHNNY GUITAR is one of his pooches--pretty much a dreary, overly long waste of space. When I first became an admirer of Ray--a great one--it was the first of his films that just left me feeling let down and totally disinterested. It's no classic. It isn't even very good.
