Easily the most comprehensive review I've seen for an average buyer. Extremely detailed, without brand bias either way. Allows one to weigh the options without sifting through hyperbole. Love it

I drive a 2016 Touareg TDI. It’s had many issues but all except sunroof leak were covered under warranty. Now it’s got 125,000 miles and runs great. Love the 725 miles I get on one fill up

I had a 2011 TDI and it was such a beautiful, comfortable, refined beast. I had so many problems with engine/emission though. Thank God it was covered under warranty. Everything you can think of from turbo to injectors and sensors, cat, glow plugs, etc. Eventually it was totaled in an accident. Now I can’t decide if I want to buy a VW Golf R or give a 2016 Touareg TDI a chance

I had almost exactly this car (year, spec, colour) for 6 years from new 2015 to 21. I bought it because its predecessor - a secondhand 2008 I had from 2011 to 2015 - was so good. In neither car did I have anything other than predictable issues which weren’t serious or expensive. Great long distance highway cruiser, driven from U.K. to south of France many times. I have a Volvo XC60 now - nice car too and much more modern technically, if a bit smaller, but occasionally miss the sheer grunt of the 3L TDI. If you can find a lowish miles good history one, aren’t much bothered about having latest tech, I don’t think you’ll go wrong.

Love these reviews, comprehensive and fair, and in depth, most informative.
No attempt to be funny smart and 'entertaining', just a dusting of humor to keep things light.
Thank you for your continuing efforts to give us top notch reviews.

2023 and I've only just found out that the 7P or Mk2 Touareg not only shares the floorpan and driveline of the Porsche Cayenne it also shares the doors.

ALWAYS loved the look and at least the off road performance of gen 1. finally pulled the trigger on the LAST YEAR IN U.S. . I REALLY wanted the TDI but as we know the Feds got that one good.
unfortunetly in late 2016 the last year of the TDI's were going for up to 20K above the gas models. so i ended up with a gas Wolfsberg - My wife LOVES it so much she said it's hers.
i believe that if VW had stuck with more of the off road of the first gen and updated to go head to head with say the new defenders etc. they may still be in the U.S.
To bad as the designs i see in Europe are interesting BUT large ! this is a perfect size.

A nice review, but I hate the deliberate tutting at the start of almost every sentence; reminiscent of the UR Top Gear presenters who were just as annoying.
I have one of these, and its a brilliant car in every way! Get the right tyres and its very very capable off road or in the snow.

These are such nice vehicles. All you need to do is drive one within it's warranty period to be worry free from expensive repair bills. I Love all these reviews, they normally don't tell you about all the faults making it seem all so heavenly. Complicated and unreliable emmissions, steering wheel lock modules, and poor computer circuitry solder causing limpmode faults, are the things that can leave you stranded. The people that don't worry are the ones with a warranty and AAA.

@Ian-lx8ps Some are better than others, I sold my neighbor a 2011 hasn't had any issues...yet after 40k miles. I told her alot of the potential issues that could arise...ticking time bomb. Maybe deleting all the emmissions would help reliability.

The V8 4.2 TDi is very popular and even better in maintenance costs. Why this is not available in the UK ? In Europe/World/ZA ans AUS it is .

    • @emergingit

If it's out of warranty get it checked by a local trusted mechanic. Like all German cars out of warranty you need to be careful.

I have a 2016 with the gas V6. Came standard with 10yr 100k power train warranty. The reliability is great but you will spend more on tires, brakes, and other regular maintenance. Only issue has been heater blower motor went out. I fixed myself in 30 minutes.

2014 Touareg TDI Sport w 182,000 miles. Is it reliable? Yes. Is it durable? Yes. Does it need maintenance and occasional repairs? Yes.
I love it and will drive it until they pry the smart key out of my cold, dead hands.

Those MPG figures are well off. 24 around town, 30 on b roads and 37 on a motorway run. The single worst thin about VW ownership is the useless dealers. They know very little about the Touareg and next to no interest in them at all. And if you are thinking of buying a new model - DONT. They are plagued with problems, and VW dealers have no comprehension of the customer service 'premium' product owners expect. I would NEVER buy another VW, simply because of the dealers. Oh, and VW is one of the most indebted manufacturers in the world. They sacked off the Golf, which is the only notable vehicle they have made in decades. Their EVs are a joke. Buy an Audi. LOL
