    This is really different, brave and creative. I love the no make-up, no plastic gunk, the real thing, the voice, that push, the power - wow! Most excellent!

    Why haven’t I heard this yet?!? I fell in love the first time I heard her nearly a decade ago.She is wildly impressive. I’d love to jam out with her. Or try to... She’s lifetimes more talented then I.

    I've seen them so many times and was on them in like 2008! What a group of TALENTED individuals! The new album isn't my FAVE in comparison to their previous stuff, but I'm enjoying their evolution of sound

    Merril has really great powerful voice, she could've picked the easy way as a solo like mariah Carey and other similar acts, but hell know she has chosen authenticy over popularity... Way to go tune-yards👏👏👏

    This album really had to grow on me... I love Merrill’s work, but, when ‘private life’ came out, I had a lot of raw feelings and it hit right in there. I gave it a shot because Tune-Yards is just so good.
    Hamir is a really good fit, as well.

    i was so scared for what i read in the coments, but man, that was awesome. i dont know what are you talkin about., they sound like a more theatrical and acoustic moby in the late 90s or early 2000s. plus, her voice is amazing. the only thing i missed was her girl band :c

    The band reminds me of the Tom Tom Club of the 80’s. I appreciate the creativity in all aspects. Her commitment to understanding and discussing white privilege is noble. Proud Bay Arean here. We need more.

    I like this performance, and I saw them play live about a month ago or so and they were great live. After a few listens of the new album I think it is decent, although I feel like they've lost some of their magic. One huge major attraction I had for this band was her live drum/percussion loops (+ all the vocal loops she would have on top of that) as opposed to having a live drummer. The drummer is amazing and can groove hard, but I was attracted to her multitasking live. To me that was part of the charm and performance that I am missing the most, because now it just sounds like pop music to me.

    • @mortisspellstone2906
      @mortisspellstone2906 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Isaiah Quino She's till doing vocal loops and I suspect she's doing percussion loops on some songs too, but the move to a live band was largely done on the Nikki Nack tour. I like the loops too, but overall I found Nikki Nack was a better live show. Haven't seen this live yet.

    • @mothernightlabel9543
      @mothernightlabel9543 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was dubious after seeing a couple of the early tv appearances in which the new singles weren't quite grooving yet. But seeing them live was a whole different story. It was incredible and the songs and performance had so much power.

    • @elainabuie624
      @elainabuie624 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do feel like I like Nikki Nack better than this album. But the social implications of what she is talking about, especially white privilege and the essential colonialism of sampling from African/Black musical heritage makes this a more "important" album, if that makes sense.

  • @carmenlinaferrante

    How is she able to record the vocal part for the loop station while the drum is playing? I'm trying to do this with rc boss 505 with a drum player per, but everytime the sound of the drum enters into the microfon and i record it for mistake. If you know how yo do it please give me an answer pleeeeeaseeeee

    I've had a mild interest in, and a challenging relationship with this band for a while. I instantly judged this book by its cover, and deemed the spelling of its name as pretentious, but I pressed on. I'd heard some songs I liked, and others I very much did not--this is an uncomfortable place for me, and doesn't happen that often. I've tried to keep an open mind, approach their music without preconceptions, and enjoy it for what it is.
    When I saw a KEXP video, I was excited--they always have such great performances and interviews, and have turned me on to many bands in the past. Clearly THIS was going to be where I came to understand this band, and put the uncomfortable love/hate feelings behind me. At least part of that would prove to be true...
    It was relatively late, and being a bit tired, I thought I'd catch up on my daily youtube through the comfort of chromecast from my bed. I put a number of videos in queue including a few music performances, and this video nearer to the end. I had underestimated my sleepyness, and a few videos in, I lost the battle of will to slumber, and drifted off.
    BUT LO! What was this God awful shrieking?! I awoke to a terrible sound; I was confused, scared, angry, and scrambling for the remote. I immediately blamed youtube autoplay for waking me up so poorly. Then it came to me; I remembered putting this in the queue, and disappointment replaced anger. My subliminal self already knew what I didn't want to: THIS IS NOT FOR ME. 0/10

    One of those pretty far out KEXP performances where I sit with my mouth open for like 5 minutes in pure shock trying to decide if its good or bad. Verdict was the latter though, just not my cup of tea.

    Quality goods, but these folks sound like bored high school music teachers that wanted to jam after school in the teacher's lounge and it just took off. Inspired and they got skillz, but it's a little "what do the kids think is hip?" That all being said, "Hands" may be the Song of Century right now.
