Just a note from someone with extremely sensitive skin: unscented is not the same as fragrance free. Unscented means they use masking fragrance to cover up the smell of the ingredients, so it has a neutral smell. Fragrance free means there's no fragrance ingredients at all.
Unfortunately Fragrance-free doesn’t always MEAN it’s fragrance-free. If a company is willing to list all the individual components of their fragrance formula on the label they can claim it is fragrance-free. It’s like claiming a burger is “special sauce-free” because they were willing to disclose the individual ingredients in the sauce along with the list of ingredients in the burger on the menu. “Fragrance” just means “we don’t want to disclose our secret recipe.” Also, if they’re using a fragrant ingredient for a purpose other than for the scent- like lavender or peppermint oils which can be used for “medicinal” things- they can claim it is fragrance-free. I recently bought a lotion that has cedrol in it, which according to pubchem is just fragrance. But companies can use it for other reasons (that I can’t remember) so, bc they’re probably using it for a reason other than scent and bc they disclosed on the label what the scented ingredient was, they were able to sell the item w a “Fragrance-Free” claim on the front of the bottle. Even though the smell is quite potent. You REALLY have to be careful and REALLY know your shit when you have a fragrance allergy. It sucks. I had so many unnecessary break outs and rashes my entire life until I finally learned all of that.
I just recently discovered this channel and wanted to say thank you! Thank you for renewing my sense of responsibility and interest in sustainability. I started to feel so defeated years ago seeing the big name zero waste influencers showing off their mason jars full of 5 years worth of trash or whatever. You make everything seem so attainable and realistic. We need so much more of you!
I have a little cotton pouch in my bag where I keep two spoons and two forks and two straws in case I’m with someone and they can use my reusables while we’re out eating 😁
My “zero waste” back pack is almost complete! And I believe everything inside is so important to keep on me. A lot of people I know think it’s weird that I carry around so much all the time, but also those people ask me to borrow stuff all the time sooo 🤷🏼♀️.
Hi Shelbi! Love the video, I agree with you that it is so fun to see how it's evolved over the years. BTW, the third charging end is called a USB-C. It's the main charger that newer Android phones use, as well as many other electronics (e.g. the switch)
I’m so impressed that your bag isn’t filled with old receipts and tickets and fluff. :) My bag reveal would consist of me going, “What the hell is that? I thought I lost that years ago.”
I know you aren't in this situation yet, but I would be so interested to see a low waste for pregnancy/babies. I'm not pregnant and don't plan to be, but I know that there are so many people who go low waste/sustainable and then have a kid and don't know what to do. Do what interests you, I'm just sort of curious. Enjoyed the 4th round of this video.
There’s definitely a lot of waste in having kids if you’re not careful. Cloth diapering/cloth wipes are a big one and I think trying to find as much baby gear used as you can helps. Except car seats! Those always need to be purchased new. And target has an awesome recycling system for car seats when they are expired or your kids outgrow them.
I also buy a lot of second hand clothes or get hand me downs from friends with older kids! It does get a little harder as they get older at least for boys because they destroy their clothes! And shoes lol. I’d definitely be interested in a video about that too.
I love this! I’ve been starting to switch to sustainable options and this will be perfect for me to look into as im traveling to portland, oregon for a few days
Taking baby steps is so important! Burning out from going to quickly and giving up is definitely not good for the environment so I'm also being forgiving with myself and taking baby steps too 😄
Since finding this channel, and doing a lot of my own research, trial and error, I’ve really started going on my own low-waste journey. Sometimes my husband rolls his eyes at some of the things I’m excited about, but I’m so proud of myself. I haven’t bought laundry detergent in a bottle for over a year, I have been using shampoo bars for at least 5 years (although I’ve yet to find the perfect match for me), and I’ve started using Blueland cleaning products and hand soap. I’ve even managed to find a company that makes scrubs with recycled plastic bottles, since I really needed more uniforms and scrubs are hard to find more eco friendly versions of.
When you said Chase, I got mad at myself haha. I started banking with Chase a little while before I started to live a more sustainable/low-waste life and never thought to look at it's impact on the Earth. Will definitely switch to Aspiration soon. Thank you for that info!
If it weren’t for you Shelbi I wouldn’t have thought about banking! Since your banking video a while back I have switched to aspiration too. Thank you for what you do and as always this video was amazing!
Speaking of water bottles. It may not be made in the most environmentally friendly way(idk), but I got one from a company called Orca. I drink a LOT of tea in a day and the one I got is 66oz, so I rarely if ever have to refill it in a day.
On their site I signed up to be notified when they finally made a case for my type of phone, it's unfortunate they don't have yours yet but they're working on it. (Android btw)
I've been using an insulated Klean Kanteen for years and I love it so much! I think it works better for keeping your drink hot or cool than other brands too!
I love Klean Kanteen. I have a bottle, didn't like the lid, so replaced it. I also have a travel cup for hot things and can use the lid from that on the bottle as well (like if I drop the one for the bottle and need to wash it, lol).
I've found quite a nice use for "single use" plastic- namely bottles. I repurpose them as sharps/biohazard containers as I'm an insulin dependent diabetic and must test my blood sugar quite often as well as needing to inject insulin. Although as for the Arizona tea bottles and the Motts apple juice bottles (both gallon sized) I reuse them for water that I get at a water dispenser near me as my house tap water tastes horrible (that's life with well water....). And then the 20oz Gatorade bottles get reused for Gatorade powder that gets mixed with water (I have dysautonomia and rely on Gatorade to help get my electrolytes needed to help with the dysautonomia symptoms).
So for your water bottle, something I just recently saw a friend do was use a big carabiner and hook the water bottle to a strap and then it hangs/ sits next to your bag.i had never thought of this before but I thought it was smart!
I recently saw that Neutrogena has started selling moisturizing bars for hand moisturizer. Haven't used it yet though so I don't know if it's good, but I like it when popular mainstream brands get into low-waste, plastic-free products.
I haven’t seen that one but I’ll surely check it out. I try to get local brands of zero waste toiletries, if possible bought in person. But sometimes I need something for my day to day life or for my family members and it’s good to have some options in the grocery store!
The 'new shape' is a C cable! The USB to C cable is the most common, but there are a few C to C cables for lightning charging of a few types of phones. Great vid!

I just got a new backpack from dayowl! I love it so much and they have a send back and repair program. I also was able to get a factory misfit for a discount but they also have a second hand section as well. Plus the water bottle holder is geniusl!
How "bad" are the misfit bags? Is it pretty minor flaws or super noticeable? Issues that effect function? (E.g. zippers) I was just looking at their website.
@@BouncyBrown everything hardware wise is functional 100%. The only thing wrong is a tiny spot of glue on the very bottom and 2 spots of discoloration on the top but nothing that you can actually see unless you’re really looking for it.

I have the EXACT same sensory issue with dry hands. I’ve gagged and have hyperventilated from touching paper or clothes after I wash my hands or shower or even if I touch something cold that perspires! I need to try the lotion
I don’t know if you already made a video about this, but I’m curious what your cat eat. Do you buy their food in bulk or do you give them some alternative
Happy Plastic Free July! Ha! Was at Target and someone asked about my Chico bags.. so happy to tell her. Day Owl is where I got my backpack and it has a compartment for water bottles.. or wine. 😉 They also have a seconds area on their site… less expensive and really I couldn’t see what was wrong even though they pointed it out. 🤞🏻🤞🏻 They are what they say! But I do love it.
Yes I hate dry hands Texture!!. It's basically all the rough edges of your skin clinging to the fibers of things and them pulling on you, if that makes sense. My least favorite is the faux Sherpa polyester on like coats and stuff + dry hands. It feels like sticking your hand into a densely packed corner of cobwebs. 😱
It’s weirdly comforting to find someone with similar texture issues to mine! I feel like you hear about people struggling with slimy textures but for me it’s all about dry/rough textures! Dry skin, dry cardboard, sometimes even velvet are just…eugh.

Hey Shelbi, would you consider doing more a consumer review type of video over Aspiration? I really like their mission, but am hesitate from switching from a bank I can go to a branch for (I bank at a local Missouri bank). Do you bank at any others banks besides aspiration? Thoughts on their user interface on their website? Thank you for all that you do!
Thank you for the video! I love seeing what’s in your bag. I’ve started switching my stuff over and using the bags I have instead of buying new. I use to have two huge totes of bags years and years ago. I have 4 that have lasted and I switch through them instead of buying new. Random question! I love your plants. I want house plants. question - is that utensil kit from earthhero easy to clean? i've been looking for one that won't get icky after i put things back after i use them. if not, do you just wrap them in napkins before you go home or?
What is the website you use to buy your electronics second hand? I remembered you saying about it in a video but I couldnt find it linked in my quick searches I did. Also I'm so glad I'm not the only person who has the weird dry hand texture thing. There are certain clothes I can't stand to touch unless my hands are absolutely hydrated
I think Walmart has stopped using plastic bags, at least the one near us is. Though they just started and I haven't been there since. I'm happy to use my cloth bags I've had for a long time.
Can you please make a video about Aspiration / eco banking? I want to switch but I'm afraid of scam banks!!! Aspiration is the one I've been thinking about but I don't know anyone personally who banks with them.
This Charlie Fiest backpack isn't very good imo, I've had it for just a few months and the zipper just wasnt sturdy enough. you're better off getting a good second hand bag instead
My thoughts as well... A few years doesn't sound very good for an everyday casual bag. I had to get a speedo backpack 10 years ago when I was on a swimming team and it's still holding strong despite me carrying litteral ankle weights, dumbbells and heavy textbooks inside. I filled it to the brim constantly, got it wet many times, took the plane and lugged it around everywhere. The blue fabric isn't as vibrant as before and the pleather coating on the bottom started peeling off but none of the zippers or seams show damage or hints of coming apart anytime soon.
Regarding the straw and eating utensils... once you use them how do you clean them before putting them away? Are you running the bathroom every time or is there some other way that I can't seem to think up?
I can't remember If I have told you this before but I have that "texture" thing too! It's some sensory thing that I've never been able to figure out exactly what it is. I don't put lotion on but I always have to wash my hands when I get that sensation. Does it also sometimes give you chills up your spine like nails on a chalkboard? I also like hardly slept as a baby and cried A lot and I think the two things are connected. Were you like that? I don't think I know anyone else who has this.
The inside of my final straw grew mildew 😖 not sure if I was doing something wrong with the way I was drying it but I've now switched to completely silicone straws for on the go. I do still love the brand though and use they're final tissue and final wipe :)
Also I’m a Chico State Alumni, so I love that you are utilizing and helping share word on two products from Chico that are amazing - Kleen Kanteen (B Corp) & Chico Bags!
There are some amazing people doing visible mending, quite a few of whom are posting content on youtube and instagram. Maybe they can give you inspiration or you can find a clever mender who might help you salvage your beloved bag?
Does anyone have any alternative to Brita? I had a bit of a frustrating experience with them not selling replacement parts but instead sending me entire new units. I'm not super down with needing to replace the plastic filter 2-3 times a years but have had trouble with the charcoal sticks falling apart when I try those alternatives.
hey shelbi, some of your texture stuff sounds like what i have, sensory processing disorder. not saying that’s what you definetly have but it could be worth looking into! i have sensitivity to a lot of textures, sounds and bright light and realizing that i have it has made it easier to deal with it
@@Shelbizleee there’s different kinds of occupational therapy for it, but my regular therapist has also helped me with coping strategies when overloaded. a lot of resources are for children because the research doesn’t often deal with adults but some people post about how they cope on smaller levels as well in shaping their sensory environment. OT is more about trying to adapt how the brain takes in the information
I need sunglasses so bad but they need prescription lenses cuz I don't wear contacts so I wonder if I can order Pela frames and then get my prescription in them 🤔
I love watching these videos. They always give me good ideas. But I want to warn you Shelbi about that charging cord from A Good Company. I've had 2 and they both started malfunctioning on me relatively quickly. Which was so frustrating. I have a charging cord from Nimble (it came with my Nimble charging block) and it's still working fine months later, unlike the one from A Good Company. So even though the Nimble one isn't 3 pronged, it'll hold up much better.
Hey :) feeling weird asking this under a sustainable video, sorry 🙈 but Ive been looking for a dress like that one you're wearing. What brand is that? Greeting from Germany:)

I love your content so much, you have such an inspiring and relatable relationship with sustainable living 💖💖💖
Hi Shelbi, do you have suggestions on certain things (maybe from your own experiences/readings) that are not ideal to purchase second-hand?
I always get 2nd hand phones and I've never had any problems with them. I tend to keep them 5+ years each.
I can relate so much with your touch sensitivity!
I think Walmart has stopped using plastic bags, at least the one near us is. Though they just started and I haven't been there since. I'm happy to use my cloth bags I've had for a long time.
Can you make a list of brands that you use
I love gir straws! They’re really compact and affordable too.
Regarding the straw and eating utensils... once you use them how do you clean them before putting them away? Are you running the bathroom every time or is there some other way that I can't seem to think up?
I usually rinse mine with water then give them a proper wash once I get home
What’s in the bag yay 😁
I can't remember If I have told you this before but I have that "texture" thing too! It's some sensory thing that I've never been able to figure out exactly what it is. I don't put lotion on but I always have to wash my hands when I get that sensation. Does it also sometimes give you chills up your spine like nails on a chalkboard? I also like hardly slept as a baby and cried A lot and I think the two things are connected. Were you like that? I don't think I know anyone else who has this.
Thanks for this! I can't find the glasses case form Pela though D:
That weird oval charger is called “type C” by the way
Nimble doesn’t ship to Canada I’m so bummed :(
Is the Aspiration card available in Canada??
I didn't see the link to the video you made on banking in the comments or in the video. Can you post it here? I'd like to watch it. Thanks.
I can't wait to see your 2022 video for this 🥰
The inside of my final straw grew mildew 😖 not sure if I was doing something wrong with the way I was drying it but I've now switched to completely silicone straws for on the go. I do still love the brand though and use they're final tissue and final wipe :)
Absolutely love and appreciate you and your channel. Thanks for sharing information like Aspiration which I didn’t know about!!! 💜
Wait ... what's the pokeball for?
I also want to know haha
Does anyone have any alternative to Brita? I had a bit of a frustrating experience with them not selling replacement parts but instead sending me entire new units. I'm not super down with needing to replace the plastic filter 2-3 times a years but have had trouble with the charcoal sticks falling apart when I try those alternatives.
“The panini and whatnot” 🤣
hey shelbi, some of your texture stuff sounds like what i have, sensory processing disorder. not saying that’s what you definetly have but it could be worth looking into! i have sensitivity to a lot of textures, sounds and bright light and realizing that i have it has made it easier to deal with it
I think so as well! What’s the solution/treatment for it tho?
@@Shelbizleee there’s different kinds of occupational therapy for it, but my regular therapist has also helped me with coping strategies when overloaded. a lot of resources are for children because the research doesn’t often deal with adults but some people post about how they cope on smaller levels as well in shaping their sensory environment. OT is more about trying to adapt how the brain takes in the information
I need sunglasses so bad but they need prescription lenses cuz I don't wear contacts so I wonder if I can order Pela frames and then get my prescription in them 🤔
Talk to me about lip balm. What’s you’re go to for that?
I love your ideas. Thank you so much.
I feel the same about dry hands! I know what you mean, weird and I don’t like it
Why do you send a tiny bottle through the mail for a refill instead of just having a large amount in storage and refilling from there?
Hey :) feeling weird asking this under a sustainable video, sorry 🙈 but Ive been looking for a dress like that one you're wearing. What brand is that? Greeting from Germany:)
