Who else in here thinks The red violin and John Corigliano are deserved for the Oscar ? I do think they deserved it. Great score and movie which inspired me a lot in learning and practicing more about music. One of my favorite movies and scores !
I agree with your assessment; this score was heavenly and well deserved, esp. Joshua Bell's violin solos. I loved T. Newman, but American Beauty was to me, over= rated. The Red Violin is a wonderful piece of incredible music that can be listen to over & over and bring one to inspired heights.
I only watched The Red Violin because it won this, and honestly i was pretty dissapointed.

Thomas Newman looks pissed, and Gabriel Yared and Rachel Portman look almost as baffled as John himself hahaha. Very surprising. But one of the greatest scores of all time.
When the presenters were announced his name for The Red Violin, John Corigliano know that he’s very excited about winning the 2000 Oscar for best original score. Very surprising. At least one of the Oscar nominated co-producers of The Green Mile was David Valdes of Imagine Entertainment who was happy and delighted along with his lovely wife and their wonderful children.

Still in fucking in denial that Thomas Newman lost. American Beauty was really the first movie I ever saw that I actually paid attention to the music, it was brilliant, and left me speechless. At least BAFTA and the Grammy's got it right. Now he's unfortunately 0-9 with the Oscars. Shame.

Chippy Vortex The Academy Awards have an incredible track record of getting this award absolutely wrong. Newman has 0; Goldsmith and Herrmann only one each. Whether Newman ever wins one or not, there is no doubt that he is the most important film composer of his generation. His work will last like Goldsmith, Herrmann and Williams.

It was regarded as one of the most fair Oscars in the film music community. "The Red Violin" was a truly masterpiece far netter than the other scores nominates. Yes, "American Beauty" was great and had a catchy theme but Corigliano's score was the deserved one. Still don't understand how the Academy did award the dark horse of the race. I bet nobody listened to this wonderful score but hey, they got it right. The last truly deserved Original Score winner.

This is John Corgliano's second nomination. In 1981, he was nominated for scoring "Altered States". This is his first win.
Kool Reeves and Charming Theron
This is one of the most outstanding soundtracks to a movie ever. A well deserved win. He wrote an entire soundtrack for the one instrument. To be across many decades and countries, cultures and ages. Just utterly blown away, now in 2017 it is the only one that has stood the test of time and will always. I 100% disagree American Beauty should have won. I loved the soundtrack at the time but now listening to it - it is very cliche for that time. This soundtrack is still being played all over the world in concert houses. We heard them play it in Prague just 2 years ago - just beautiful well done sir!
I feel the opposite. I find the score for The Red Violin to be cliche; it sounds like any other orchestral score. American Beauty's still holds up 100%.

Absolutely incredible list of nominees. Holy shit, the quality of these film scores is incredible and would warrant a win in any other year.
Fabulous movie and an exquisite masterpiece of music. I am so happy to know that this soundtrack won the Oscar. The movie was overlooked and very few people saw it, which was a real shame. I remember seeing it at a small art house theatre in Birmingham, MI and being so blown away by the movie and the score. It stuck in my head for days as I dissected all the pieces of the amazing film and the story. I had to seek it out on the internet later and watch the movie again. What a gem!

Agreed. Although American Beauty doesn’t hold up well today (especially since it almost mirrors Kevin Spacey’s sexual lust), the score by Thomas Newman definitely does though. It’s still a beautiful score to listen to and perfect for relaxation.

To be fair: i haven't seen The red Violin so i can't judge the movie. I listened to the score, which is beautiful, however i'm not a big fan of the Violin. Though i'm sure he deserved this Oscar.

HAL 9000 Wow, what an insult “butthurt” even a third grader attempting to be a troll would be able to come up with a better insult. Also having the visuals to go with the score adds so much more to it! What you are thinking is just awful. How would you feel if why watching “The Adventures of Robin Hood” or “E.T. The Extra Terrestrial” and during the most powerful moments of the film that feature the best parts of the score the screen went black and you only had the audio? You would lose 99% of the magic when watching a film!!

These five Oscar nominated film scores were luxurious to listen to and in fact, there’s still nothing else quite like it.
Music for American Beauty was good, but it doesn't hold a candle to The Red Violin. I suspect most that didn't think The Red Violin should have won are mostly those can't appreciate concert music without a movie to go along with it.

According to Jon Burlingame, Jon Brion's score for Magnolia didn't make the cut.
But American Beauty, Angela's Ashes, The Cider House Rules, The Red Violin and
The Talented Mr. Ripley were all making the cut.
As a real result, John Corigliano's score for The Red Violin won an 2000 Oscar
which I'm very proud of the score and the rest is history.

I haven't seen The Red Violin but I did listen to the score and I can't say this deserved it. It's good but I wouldn't be able to tell it apart from any other orchestral score. Thomas Newman's use of piano and percussive instruments (Marimba, Bongos, Bass Drums, etc) gave the music an off kilter feel and provided much of the emotional heft. American Beauty deserved the win.

I hope the Academy regretted this decision. And I think they have since nobody has ever heard of ''The Red Violin''. Newman's score is a timeless classic and ''American Beauty'' will always be his best.
Newman's score was excellent. But as a violinist myself, I totally support the Academy's decision. Corigliano's score was amazing and made the Red Violin work as a movie. Actually, come to think of it, he shouldn't have won Best Score but Best Actor - the voice of the violin was the main part of the movie. All the others were supporting roles.
Maybe not to Americans, but in Canada The Red Violin is a significant film.

Without it, I don't think it would be the same movie. The score for The Red Violin doesn't really have the same power. It's good but Beauty's was great.
