    the sea monster of theseus "best monster of 2017" meme is so great. like, it would have been a stupid card to hype up THAT dramatically no matter what year it was, but 2017 specifically is just like... like let's just go through a list of some other monsters that came out that year.

    •all the lyriluscs (including the bird up ones AND the ftk fusion one)
    •all the Gouki monsters
    •a bunch of lunalight monsters (kaleido chick etc.)
    (and i guess trickstars were okay too)
    this was one of the most insane years in the history of the game in terms of its card catalog and konami decided "hmmmmmmmm... this vanilla instant fusion target......... this is the peak power level of the game. because it's a tuner. after all, needlefiber's gonna come out in the ocg this year. also we will not be releasing needlefiber for 3 more years"

    To be fair to Scrap Raptor, it actually did break Dinosaur. It had a ton of representation and top finishes at remote duel events over the time period that it was legal and only stopped being playable because Misc went to 1. Definitely not the generic powerhouse card that people expected though, didn't do anything for Orcust builds or for pure Scrap because of how fragile it is.

    • @weckar

      Main issue Orcust ran into playing it was sequencing. It competes for the normal summon way too much with Girsu (while recycler doesn't). If it could be reliably brought to field without a normal summon it would probably work - but then the same would probably apply to recycler directly as well.

    Dragoon was the best thing a lot of decks could reliably do, and it could be done _very_ reliably. He felt like a gatekeeper on the format, locking out a bunch of rogue decks, and being so obviously the best play in others that it just made things less fun for both players. He sure didn’t substantially shake up the meta… but I do feel like the only reason he’s not still seeing play as at least a backup option is because DPE stole his place.

    • @rayronnyd4659
      @rayronnyd4659 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Exactly. Dragoon is an insanely strong card. And could win you games by itself similar to UCT. It just got creeped. As all cards do. The garnets for DPE are better because they can special summon a monster you draw and more importantly: Draw you two cards. That and How hard DPE is to get rid of made him the better pick. Plus the red eyes fusion sucks. Where as the fusion to make DPE is way better.

    Golden Apples was used in Duel Links because it gained you back LP to trigger skills (destiny draw) as well as you get the token that essentially would wave away the battle phase until they got something bigger if they attacked with their strongest monster first, but eventually just phased out from play because it was an SR in a box that became increasingly more garbage even with the card still being as good as it has ever been cause the battle phase still matters to some decks. Scrap raptor also did break at least dinosaurs open even if they only became middling, and anyone that's played against them in Master Duel where they can end on a few enough negates and the conductor by the time their turn ends can attest to it.

    Dragoon is a very interesting case
    Just use non targeting non destruction removal to out it while dealing with the negate and doing your plays... not hard for basically any meta deck. But a lot of off meta decks seriously struggle with that, and because it's so much easier to put on the board in every deck than it is to get rid of, it destroys people in casual play.

      dragoon is like HFD in that regard. Doesn't matter against meta all that much, gatekeeps anything rogue and below. Honestly even in TCG while it wasn't as format warping as in OCG almost every deck ran Anaconda just to summon it
      Like if a card that needs you to play 3 garnets still saw that much meta play I'm not sure if it fair to call a flop really, cause at the very least it lived to a bit of its hype

    • @Lobohobo
      @Lobohobo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@TheHuma797 The thing is though, that it was not played (to this day I think?) in a lot of higher tiered decks. Anaconda + Dragoon pretty much ruined less meta oriented play for a while, because it was so easy to summon, every deck played it if they had the space + 2 monsters at the end of the turn and was very oppressive vs decks that arent tiered, but most competent decklist could play through it and the highest tier of play didn't play it in every deck like people predicted it. The only high tier deck that played it in a lot of lists was Drytron IIRC. So while I still think the card was unhealthy combined with Anaconda (when is this card finally gonna get banned zzzzz), it was way better in the OCG due to their banlist and format in general and a bit overhyped in the TCG for sure.

It's pretty easy to get out there, and has its utility...mainly in being Accesscode food that can actually do stuff...including outing some difficult floaters. It sort of fulfills a similar role to Powercode Talker...only it's a bit less generic, but a bit more powerful for the effort in most situations. It's biggest issues are: 1. Not having slightly better protection or having its protection without messing around with levels; 2. It's an Earth-type, so doesn't actually fit all that well into chaos...(why isn't it either Dark or Light).

    I remember Primathmech Alambertain was being heralded as the next broken generic rank 4 because it could theoretically be used to search any spell/trap. I never believed it because YOU NEED TO DETACH 4 MATERIALS TO SEARCH ANY SPELL/TRAP.

    Oooh Elementsabers got cut? Surprising, MBT spoke a lot about them.

    I just kinda make decks by searching what I need and then discovering what fills the roles, but man, I am really happy and proud of my Sac deck. I just fetch Lair of Dankness with like 7 different cards then wait for my opponent to summon something I can disrupt, and use anything like Lilith, or Ballista Squad and end their turn. And since the tribute is part of the payment, its not counterable.
    I found a home for Ogdoadic, and I wanna keep them.

    Does anyone remember when Lulleby of obedience was thought to be a card that was so strong that printing it was a mistake. It then did nothing

    i love how mbt talks about the ten minute testing video of mysterune that has been out for some time now and he made a dogwater build of the deck.

    Wolfrayet was one of the worst cards I experimented with in vw, I have tried so much copium and even Beatrice mill destrudo and snow on your opponents turn is better than it. I remember being confused at the hype it was getting and I'm happy to be right.

      that card Was sooo bad in VW. even vermillion pass is better :/

      I really don't get the point of how it's supposed to work

      @@kyleyuen245 Basically a very bad Nibiru. Every summon pumps Wolfrayet’s attack by 300, once it hits 4k attack it can use its second effect. Since it starts at 2.5k, you can use the quick effect after they summon 5 to shuffle their board back. But so many decks have anti-Nibiru lines that get a monster negate, destruction effects since Wolfrayet has no protection, etc before 5 summons that it’s completely worthless.

    • @Zachpi
      @Zachpi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kyleyuen245 after 5 monster effects you can spin your opponents monsters back but it has no protection and vw doesn't really put anything up to fill that purpose, so it's usually just gonna fiend a removal/negate and be overall worse than just making shenshen

      Thanks guys, I remember reading it and going 'that's never really gonna go off' and then I saw it played a bit. If it were even like 3 effects it might be a decent tech option in some monster heavy formats but as it is 5 is to many

    Ogdoadic is fun but not competitive. I do pretty well with it at my locals when mixed with the new reptillianne support in burst of destiny. I really like them with lair of darkness too

    I like playing BLS in my dmaids in master duels but only because they can get enough bodies and lv7 or 8 for his protection to go off and they have extra deck space.
