Beautifully done. A really serious piece of professional film making. No 'edges' no patchy parts, just simple yet deep and moving. And no 'twist' ! That in itself raises it above the average.

Vatroslav Morbidović I just wondered, would this really happen in real life? That you let yourself be talked into a suicide? She was so busy saving others but wanted to kill him. She was no doctor, but a deluded narcissist.

To put a Twilight Zone or Outer Limits slant to it:
The final ships sound their horns and lift off. With all of the alien's newly acquired livestock/slave labor safely restrained; the signal is sent to a ship parked just outside our solar system to switch its holographic generator off. The purple hue gives way to cool moonlight cast across the beach.
The scene fades from the couple's astonished faces to a classically designed room with a lit fire place glowing against the fine wood embellishments of a study lined with old books. Against the crackling of burning logs a shadowed figure raises a bubbly champagne filled glass and pierces the relative silence. "A toast! Here's to a fresh infusion of technology and a population size far more manageable. What a fine punctuation to decades of negotiation! It was a very reasonable transaction."
Comfortable in a decadently upholstered chair another takes a sip and contemplates. "Yes, more manageable, but willing to die. There will surely be outrage."
"Ah yes, but the outrage is always desired. Its the sweet chorus of confusion and anger we wait for before we provide a solution. The outrage will eventually give way to their pride of staying behind. We'll see to that. And when it does, we'll be ready to 'protect' them and insure such an unfortunate deception never happens again.......as we always have."
Scene fades out to light laughter.

Wouldn’t make any sense to make a light show just to get slaves. They are an advanced species. All they had to do is drug the atmosphere to make us into sheep and just direct us to board their ships. Slaves safely acquired..... No muss no fuss.

It would not surprise me.But as previously stated an advanced race would not need to spend the effort. If they were an advanced but warlike race for example. They could simply display their technological/military might.Show the global population that their military's cant defend them. Then tell every government on Earth at the U.N. we want slaves. Each country will provide a qouta which will be determined by the current population of their nation or country.Resist or fail to comply and their will be consequences.Your war machines will be decimated utterly. Then we will take the required slaves from your civilian population until the qouta from that region has been filled. You have 24 of your hours to decide.

So, first she convinced the poor lad to leave earth and become an alien slave. Then she made sure they get as late as possible along the way, while also criticizing and judging him for hurrying up to the ship. In the end, when he is finally ready to go be an alien puppet, she tells him that he has changed and decides to stay behind and die instead. What a nice story.

So he never decided to leave before they arrived? Given up all the reasons to help others when he thought it was now useless? Yep. We all love our dystopias, don't we?
And he had no opportunity to meet a different woman? Come on. Sure, she's a bleeding heart that cares about others. Boohoo. You can all decide to be with a heartless bitch if you want. The moment she dumps any of your asses to say, "Be seeing you sucka" you'll swear up and down she was the best? He could have decided he does not want to be with someone like that. At any point.
Why do men act like other men are really that gullible? I've yet to meet any man that decides to do something major without logic being involved.

High-energy radiation from black holes could have taken longer (only by minutes though) We've observed this effect. Researchers think that the radiation is interacting with “quantum foam” to cause the delay. Sometimes we do not have to be superheroes to discover that our strength is greater than life itself, making us understand that existence is only a detail and that we need more to complete ourselves - this is what gives meaning to our lives: to live but more fully. I love the acting & premise of this film, now for some facts: It's pretty unanimous among scholars who study this that being from 50 to 100 light-years is the closest safe distance between Earth and a supernova. We're pretty certain which stars will go supernova in the future, they give off unmistakable markers. Spica a is the closest star that could go supernova it is 240 light-years from Earth. Spica has several times the mass of the Sun, & it shouldn't go off for a few million years yet. The super giant red star Betelgeuse, located in Orion's belt will definitely go supernova, in fact it may have already happened, it's located 430 light-years away, so if it went supernova 400 years ago, we wouldn't know until it's light reached us in another 30 years, BTW this would be one spectacular light show, but not have any effects on us...

I could see a story involving an Alien civilization fleeing their dying world and turning up at Earth. Would they be aggressive and militaristic with higher technology. Would they be carbon based? We can't assign human morality, culture and feelings to a completely alien species. Not every alien race is going to be E.T. and furry Ewoks.

After watching this again after 6 years, it's still a fine little film. Congratulations, cast and crew, and the person who wrote the short story on which the film was based. I've had a few acquaintances criticize the female lead and her choices towards the end of the film as if it personally affected them in some way , which I found a bit strange and disconcerting , but it's a film , the characters made their choices , and I thought it was poetic and moving. I'm going to google you Mr Whitmore and see what else you've done. All the best !

Apart from some scientific inaccuracies, i was troubled with the side most filmmakers take on: The worst and usually the most irrational way of human behavior. I am referring to the shootout at the house with the old man, a man who without reason would rather choose to shoot a girl in dire circumstances. Of course, it is an easy way to create some drama scenes, but still is something I do not like seeing in many films. Take the convenient way isn't always the best thing to do to create some action/drama scenes.
Other than that, the film is well narrated and with good acting. The story is very good as to the dilemma it represents. What I would like to see is a continuation of what is life in the slave spaceships.
