Shanks also noted that Ace knew Gol D. Roger's name instead of just calling him "Gold Roger", and that Ace was from the South Blue, which is where he knew his captain had gone after the Roger pirates disbanded. Only then did he realize who he had just met :)

The thing i love about this scene is that Ace was gonna prove his power in the world by challenging the strongest with his strength alone, not by revealing his bloodline as being son of King of the pirates. Strange part is that Ace and Shanks in a way are basically brothers. Ace is Gol D. Roger's biological son, and Shanks was raised as a baby to childhood by Roger after Roger found him in a treasure chest on his ship. In a way they are both the children of Roger, carrying on his piracy with Shanks emulating Roger the most while Ace tries to do the opposite while still being a pirate.

The thing i love about this scene is that Ace was gonna prove his power in the world by challenging the strongest with his strength alone, not by revealing his bloodline as being son of King of the pirates. That would've made ace look like a snotty nosed brat, and eventually Luffy's rival but with bad intent. Oda wrote this thing just right man.
