For Dimash, this is the most difficult song to sing, due to the story behind it. Samaltau means Mount Samal. The lyrics are sad because they refer to when in 1916 the Russians recruited young Kazakhs and forced them to fight in the First World War. According to the lyrics, a young man who marches towards the battle zone thinks about what awaits him and suffers for what will happen to his parents, who are old and left alone, and who may not return alive. On the way he also thinks that it will be the last time he will see his house and his beautiful mountains. For Dimash, family union and love for her is one of the greatest things, hence the difficulty in interpreting it.
The Russian tsar and recruiters treated us like cattle (they didn't feed us, they kept us in unsanitary conditions). That is why, out of 400,000 (Kazakh) soldiers recruited in the first months, 150,000 died of disease and starvation. They did not give us weapons, they fought with shovels against cannons and rifles. Of the 400,000 Kazakh soldiers, 300,000 conscripted Kazakhs did not return home (the fate of the author of this song is unknown; perhaps he died in that war)-
    KOBYZ
Kobyz is an ancient instrument, it was used by the wise and referents to drive away evil spirits, formerly its two strings were made with horsetail Greetings from Panama.

This is one of my favorite songs, Dimash voice and instrumentation are amazing. The best version is the one for the Tokyo Jazz Festival. ❤️🎤🔝🌹🌹 Kobyz is an ancient tool of the peoples who lived in the East, including nomads. It was used in ancient times by steppe shamans-healers for various rites. Kobyzy is made from a single piece of wood. This is one of the oldest ways of making musical instruments in the history of mankind. It is not due to technical backwardness or the lack of metal devices. According to the ancient beliefs of many people, only in a single piece will the living singing soul of the tree remain, which will sound in the instrument. The open body and strings of the kobyz from a bunch of 30-60 untwisted horse hair give a very thick, overtone-rich. The gentleman playing the Kobyz is master Olzhas Qurmanbeck, the best player in Kazakhstan 🎻🔝

Dimash is the best singer in the WORLD and there are no doubts about that, his voice is a prodigy of nature and a genetic marvel since his parents are two glories of singing from Kazakhstan since he was 5 years old, he sings publicly and has more than twenty years of lyrical training and graduated from the university of music, he is a singer, composer, arranger and multi instrumentalist, he plays more than seven musical instruments and sings in more than Ten(10) languages, he is also a great performer and a great artist who lives and feels music He is not an imitator of voices , Dimash has his own style and is one of the forerunners of the "POPera" he also has a very pleasant, HUMBLE and simple personality, easy access, which makes it very easy to follow, he always travels with His family and friends is a very educated person and an example to follow, he has become known for his musical talent not for getting into trouble or scandals, It has a very wide vocal range of approximately 7 octaves ,he is a singer with a wide vocal range very versatile is Baritone, TENOR , Soprano, counter TENOR, mezasoprano, everything at the same time is how to have 5 singers in one, it has a male and female voice, also many resources such as vibrato, "melismas", falsetto, Staccato, whistle tone, reaching a( D8 )live "Outside of Piano"at the concert of Gakku in an unforgettable day, at his young age he continues to improve and grow musically to perfection, he has a good physical presence he measures 191 cm or 6 "3", he is very famous and recognized in Asia and now he is becoming known In Europe and America, ALL their songs are spectacular, it always goes from low to high, soft to spectacular at the end, in my almost half a century of life I never heard so much quality and it is the hope of continuity of the classical genre because all the old tenors have already Almost all of them died and Dimash can sing like them but none of them can sing like Dimash, being a Man he sings better than any Tenor and his female voice is superior to that of any average Soprano, greetings and a hug from USA 🇺🇸 "Dears" Forever ❤️👍🏻 Sorry for copying and pasting my informative comment in ALL the Video reactions to Dimash what I see but I do it with the intention of sharing information about him and what I think that in the music industry there are many artists who have been successful and have no talent and are bad people and they do not set a good example for the youth, Dimash and his music deserve to triumph in America, Europe and the whole WORLD, do you want to have already read my comment please come by without problem there is always someone who for the first time knows this information and I won't get tired of sharing it with all my friends"Dear" around the world, thanks for reading and for supporting Dimash 🙏🏻S.O.S. So many of these comments break my heart. I am a 70 year old widow and one of the many Dimash Dear's. To see that so many of the commentators are forgetting completely Dimash's message of Peace among peoples, Love, Kindness and Respect for all. Samaltau is a beautiful song, no political agenda is behind it in Dimash' singing of it, just the sadness of a young man going off to war and I fear he would be very disappointed, disheartened to see the responses.

Sharon, I did not expect to wake up to this. It wasn’t my intention to ignite a political discussion, nor to be told over and over again that there’s a better version of this performance. I would have wished, people simply recognized Dimash's powerful yet calm interpretation of this very sensitive topic, regardless of where he’s sitting. It’s a shame really.

Russia did not grant Kazakhstan the right to be a republic until 1991.
Dimash was born in 1994, He is a fierce patriot to his land and i admire him for that.
Recently, when he was in China, unrest began in Kazakhstan and Russia was involved. Some of this was going on in his home town.
Dimash had his family send him a Kazak flag and he wrapped it around himself in singing events while he was in China.
He was openly disturbed and though his family does not believe in saying gad things about others, his mother (Sveta) did call the disturbers a name or two.

It doesn’t matter where you come from we all have terrible episodes in our history. It is deeply ingrained in the human nature to conquer and there are always consequences: death, sacrifices, misery, exploration, starvation, torture and degradation. Yes, history is here with different accounts depending who side it is or who is telling it. What’s the point in scrubbing this on each other faces? The important thing is to learn the lesson of the past and try not to repeat it in the future. I have respect to the people who managed to overcome all the tribulations and became better people with more understanding, empathy and compassion. If everybody follow those there will be no war. My hope is that peace prevails! Isn’t that the message that Dimash gives always? He sings with emotion from the history of his country but he doesn’t condemn anyone. He respects everyone. Let’s follow his example please🙏

    Samal Tau (Wind Mountains)
    Versions: #1#2#3
Samal Tau, my native land, the vast sea
What days await me in the soldiers
    Remember again and again
Native land where he was born and raised
    I'm not riding, I'm walking
    Even slower than walking
    Fifteen days of travel
    Approaching towards Omsk
I'm at the age of two cycles, the year of the cow
By the will of fate, he went to a distant land
Samal tau, native lands left behind
We are like a school of horses, detached from their native lands
    My mother and father
    They are elderly people...
    This song was composed
The misfortunes of the 16th year
Samal Tau, my native land, the vast sea
What days await me in the soldiers

Another beautiful reaction. I always enjoy your honest, genuine response to him. Dimash's live stream performance of Samaltau for the 2020 Tokyo Jazz Festival is equally moving. I actually prefer it because it features another traditional Kazakh instrument, a side-blown flute called a Sybyzgy, traditionally played by shepherds and horse herders. That performance to me feels even more emotional and intimate, as it was recorded in Dimash's studio at home. Here is the link: th-cam.com/video/UvMRkiYu3Js/w-d-xo.html
Someone else stated: The back story is important in interpreting this experience. This song is based on the writings of a young Kazakh who lived with his parents and family in the mountainous area of Kazakhstan when he was forced into the Tsar's army to fight in WWI. He had never been out of his own little part of Kazakhstan. The sounds of those ancient instruments represented the sounds of nature that he loved so much -- the wind, the howling wolves, etc. He's being forced to go fight in a war he does not understand for a Tsar to which he feels no allegiance. He misses his homeland and family as he marches to war, and he's wondering if he will survive the battles and be able to return to the homeland he loves so much. If you are interested in learning more about that period, here is additional information: www.iias.asia/the-newsletter/article/time-ordeal-story-1916-revolt-central-asia
As you already know, Dimash is from Kazakhstan, but more specifically, he is a native Kazakh. Kazakhs are a separate indigenous people from regular Kazakhstanis. They are the original Nomad tribes from the steppes; some still live as nomadic people. Dimash is a direct descendant and lives traditionally with his extended family, and they keep all the cultural traditions. It is custom that the firstborn son of a family is given to a set of grandparents to raise for at least 10 years. Dimash was entrusted to his paternal grandparents, and they raised him to be highly confident in himself. They raised him to believe that God had a great plan for him, and he should pursue it and dedicate himself to that plan with his entire being.
The kobyz, played here by Olzhas Qurmanbeck, is a 5,000-year-old, traditional, and sacred instrument in Kazakhstan. The kobyz or Kyl kobyz is the most ancient bowed instrument on earth, widespread among the Turks, Kazakhs, Karakalpaks, Bashkirs, and Tatars. It became the basis for most of today's bowed instruments worldwide, including European instruments such as violin, viola, cello, and contrabass. The Kyrgyz variant is called Kyl kayak. The instrument is carved from a single piece of wood (typically apricot), juniper (arsha), maple, pine tree, or birch. It consists of three parts: head (bas), middle (base is keude), and lower part (ayak) and usually measures 60-70 cm. It has two strings made from horsetail hair, one to provide melody and the other resonance. The bow is shaped like an archer's bow, and its string is tied to both ends of the bent branch and affixed with strong threads of camel wool.
    LYRICS (from lyricstranslate.com):
Mountain breeze, my amazing country, my endless lake,
What days await me as a soldier,
You keep coming into my mind from time to time,
My amazing homeland, where I was born and raised

    I wasn't riding; I was walking,
    Even slower than walking,
    Been strolling for 15 days
    In the direction of Omsk

I'm at the age of two cycles, the year of the cow
By the will of Fate, I went farther away
Mountain breeze, my amazing country, you're left behind
From the hollow field, we are the only ones

    I had parents,
    Of progressed age,
    Since this song was written,
    It's been 16 years.

Mountain breeze, my amazing country, my endless lake,
What days await me as a soldier.

I too, love this song, this version in particular altho' the Tokyo Jazz song is also very moving ...the despair, sorrow and longing he portrays in his vocals are heartbreaking, I cry each time I hear this but rather than make me sad, for some unknown reason it makes me feel hope, can't explain ...just something happens within my heart, fills me up with ??

Did you not hear that? The cry of a lone wolf as the player stroking the Qobyz. It was so breathtaking for me. I really can see this majestic beast running in the dark through the valley in my mind. Listening to your reaction does increase my weltanschauung. Thanks, Aylin. The lightning clouds probably meant the turbulence period or self during that time.

In "Samaltau " puoi sentire i lupi ululare, abbaiare,correre....
Niente note alte in queste.....Buon Ascolto.🥰
