This is a very specific video, which according to the Shaelin school of thought is a great compliment
I am absolutely FERAL for Eyes Guts Throat Bones! so happy to hear it being mentioned! 🎉
SAME
Yesss another recent reads!!
I'm currently reading Parable of the Sower and I agree, it feels a bit too realistic for my liking haha, but overall I'm liking it. Adding a few of these books to my tbr - I think I'll start with Greek Lessons by Han Kang. I'm also a big fan of Elif Batuman, although I have to admit I liked The Idiot much more than Either/Or. Thanks for the great content!
legit just bought “eyes, guts, throat, bones” off your recommendation! i’ve been in need of a capital G good short story collection
it's sooo good!!
i love your recent reads videos, havent watched this one yet but im so ready to read half the books on this list now. always thankful for the recommendations
I haven't read it but I've heard good things about The Tiger's Daughter by K. Arsenault Rivera as a sapphic fantasy!
Definitely picking up Eyes Guts Throat Bones, it sounds like it was made for me.
I really liked Godkiller. Kissen is like a female Geralt of Rivia but perhaps more badass since she’s only got one leg. It made me really excited to finally get into the Witcher books. But I get how the romance would be disappointing. I honestly wasn’t expecting any romance at all so I was like oh ok this is interesting ok moving on lol. I honestly wish it had been longer to build more on the world and the romance but I enjoyed the progression of Kissen and her not wanting Inara around but then becoming so protective of her. It was so sweet. I’m ready for the sequel to come out
Godkiller is for sure super fun - loveee Kissen!! I think I'm just very picky about fantasy haha but I'm curious about the sequel!
Things not really landing?? Sorry to hear that's the case for you, Shaelin. Oddly enough I've had the polar opposite: books I've read have been getting more interesting, and the stuff I've written myself has come onto the page in a more satisfactory way than it did last year.
Switching from weekly uploads to monthly has made your absences more noticeable, but in a way that's made me optimistic about the breathing room you have for your goals. So kudos.
I just read BOULDER by Eva Baltasar, translated by Julia Sanches. It’s sapphic literary fiction and very short. I think you would really enjoy it! I thought of you when I read it. I really enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing your recent reads! 🥰
Oohh I just read her other book, Permafrost, and loved it!! Boulder is on my list too!
@@ShaelinWritesI think you’ll enjoy it a lot! I haven’t read her other works!
I also greatly disliked Dykette and had to dnf. It really fell short. And I was also slightly underwhelmed by Greek Lessons. I think I was expecting something like the Vegetarian and this was a lot more subdued. Eyes guts throat bones however!!! I read it last year and loved it so much it it became one of my favourite collections. I can’t wait to reread it sometime this year.
yay recent reads!
"it was giving me notes of Gods of Want by K-ming Chang" omg i have to read this say no more
Sapphic fantasy recs:
Gideon the ninth (this one's more sci-fi and kinda confusing at first but it's good)
House of Hollow (this one has queer undertones it's more in the background-but I'm recommending it because it's a bridge between literary fiction and fantasy with cool plant imagery and body horror. It's YA but I was actually pretty impressed by it.)
About 62% into John Truby’s Anatomy of Genre. No Sapphic Romance, BUT in the Myth chapter he makes the point that there is a forgotten Complement [yes, like complementary angles in mathematics and at the some time oddly complementary colors?!] to the [Male] Hero’s Journey [that glorious Plot Embryo we lean & that have given us so much mileage]. This Female Myth has been suppressed through the ages, but the framework pops up in fascinating stories. Dorothy’s [SPOILERS] Kansas Oz Kansas, Odysseus’ Ithaca Troy Ithaca journeys. The cyclical Odyssey compares so well to the Male Myth of Achilles’ one way journey into immortality. I admit I probably have not explained this well. I think it’s something we can collectively attain a grasp of the female myth in practicum.
You should do one on writing post-modern fantasy. Or writing low fantasy, high fantasy, dark fantasy, swords&sorcery, swords&sandals. Urban fantasy and elf-punk. I guess fantasy short stories or even flash fiction (should you try fantasy flash fiction?).
I unfortunately don't have experience with most of those genres, so I can't really teach how to write them!! I think those genres are quite specific so have to be taught by someone who actually knows what they're talking about haha
sapphic fantasy recommendation... I'm gonna say it again... THE LOCKED TOMB 💀
definitely on my list!!
I've been waiting to hear your review of Dykette omg, it's an absolute mess. I don't want to believe these kind of devastatingly self-centred celesbians exist. I was so looking forward to it and it drove me up the fucking wall lol
SO glad it's not just me. I was ready to love it but omg...it reallyyyy *irritated me* Normally I love a messy lesbian moment but this one really did not work for me
How do you find books to read? I have a problem where I don't wanna read any of the books I have in my house but can't figure how to find good ones. Please help!
Hey schaelin! Where could I submit for critique, if you're accepting?
💃 *PromoSM*
It’s disheartening that you feel the need to make that disclaimer before every recent reads video, when it should just be obvious. Just goes to show people’s eagerness to misinterpret/find fault in what others say
Honestly I think sometimes online book spaces can lose sight of the fact that varying, conflicting opinions on a book can all be equally valid, so I just like to open these videos with the fact that I think all the books are equally valuable and my opinion doesn't change that! 99% of comments on these videos are super chill, I just like to be clear about my reading/reviewing philosophy.
