  • This is a rare video clip filmed in Iwama, the location of Morihei Ueshiba's country dojo and the famous Aiki Shrine, in 1964. The Founder O-Sensei appears here with his devoted student, Morihiro Saito, one of the most outstanding figures in the postwar development of aikido.

Like the comments here. Though im no àikidoka i encourage fans of O Sensei to really capture n learn what he's demo. Whether it's a staff, bokken, fan etc in his hands i reckon he's in deep commune with the Universe: purification, peace, harmony n Love. That's what I see him say.

Good practice to hit trees with sticks. It's similar to throwing opponents that don't fight back and cooperate perfectly. I have never seen an aikido demonstration that is realistic in any way. They never learn to deal with real attacks, only cooperating fake opponents. Very bizarre.

Well, "realistic" in what way? To evaluate Aikido, you have to do it against it's purpose and it's meaning. Not against something else.
You don't judge a screwdriver by trying to hammer some nails with it.

@ช่องน้องจิมมี่ you don't know me. Not all comments that are negative are uninformed. I comment based on what I know and what I see. I guess you only want comment that say things like "great video", or "I love your videos". What good is that? Maybe you should say that you only want positive comments and I won't bother telling my honest opinion and move on to videos where there is an open, honest dialog. One thing about training police with aikido. If police are trained with fully cooperating opponents like we see in mist aikido demos then those cops will never be able to use it. I am sure the kind of aikido used in real life is much different. I would love to see that style of aikido taught to cops, but we NEVER see that. Why? We only hear stories of the old days.

@Perry Pelican, you're welcome to come visit my dojo in Chicago, we'd be happy to share some "realistic, Southside of Chicago" Aikido with you. 😊 And we'd be happy for you to share your exceptional martial arts skill with us...we love learning

@ช่องน้องจิมมี่ are your serious? Of course aikido is full of great techniques. It's obvious. The problem is simply that unless you train against a resisting opponent you will not be able to use those techniques when a real opponent comes along. You must agree with that. Those police who were trained had to test themselves against real attacks, not the kind of training done in most dojos. You show one kind of training and then talk about something totally different. These days, aikido is nit taught to police because it has changed drastically. Students in dojos are definitely not taught how to deal with real attacks. Or do you disagree. Telling me about historical stuff when aikido was taught to be a practical self defense art is not a way to defend todays aikido which is totally different. And I have nothing against aikido. It's always healthy to exercise. But it is not taught as a martial art in the dojos of TODAY.
Why do you have to Insult me. You don't Know me and have no idea what my history is. What I say makes sense, so if you want to talk about it, no need to attack who I am. I do not defend my argument by insulting you personally. I talk about the facts.

I am talking about sparring which is to put your training to the test. Aikido practitioners never do that. They only learn to practice, not fight. Imagine an aikido student being attacked on the street. He will have no clue what to do because he never trained to deal with real attacks. He never sparred in his dojo. I am amazed that you do not agree. Do you really think that most aikido dojos prepare students to defend themselves against a real attack? How can you learn to do something without ever practising? And I have visited top aikido dojo. It is very impressive and very good for you if that's what you want. But it is not training for a real attack. It is something else that honestly I do not understand. OSensei was a great fighter. He was able to deal with real attackers, but for sone reason he decided to stop sparring and stop competition, which I will never understand. Please tell me if you believe that aikido dojos prepare students for being attacked on the street.
