Thanks Bob, that will be helpful. I noticed right off the bat that you had separated the take-up arm assembly from the two studs and I was treating them all together as one unit.
Something to remember - when in doubt, break it down to basic components and start over, checking each piece you add for operation. You'll soon find the problem.
I’m so glad to see you love the old sewing machines. Me too. I’ve been trying to find information on adjusting the take up lever by using the knee lift. It’s for an industrial Singer 20u model. The knee lift is slipping on the rod because the bell crank parts inside the machine are almost frozen up. I can depress the lever underneath by hand but only slightly. I have oils and greased using Triflo with no success. Also tried adjusting in the area around the hand lift lever. The company that sold me the machine insisted the knee lever is not placed properly. I have old 20u-13 and understand how they operate. Since you are so through in your work, I’m hoping you can help.thanks
Without having the machine in front of me, it's difficult to give an accurate diagnosis of how to fix the problem. What is safe to say however, is that a thorough cleaning and polishing of the parts can't possibly hurt. It's difficult, and sometimes impossible, to to properly adjust a mechanism that is covered in grime and old oil is oil.
@@BobFowlerWorkshop thank you for your reply. This machine is new. Purchased March/April 2020. I let it set unused until last week. Everything is oiled and should be working well. I have been in contact with the seller (Levy) out of Los Angles. He thought it could be the finger lever that lifts the rod connected to the foot. He is supposed to be o make a video this week but I have really lost hope. I’m glad I found you since we love the old machines.
I have a question about feed dogs. On some of my 66’s, I bring them to their highest position and I notice some play when I place my finger on them and push back and forth. That would have to affect stitch length consistency. I can’t seem to find anyway to adjust out the play. Do you know of any solution?
If there is slop in the feed dogs, you need to work backwards to find where the excess play is in the linkages. Start at the feed dog arm where it connects to the rock shaft, those two adjusters may have a lot of lost motion. Next, I would look at connection of the fork to the rock shaft.
