We have Annie’s hummingbirds in my area. They are territorial and tend to drive each other away, at least when they are mature. The young ones will share. Many people have feeders in my neighborhood, so they have lots of options. I have 4 feeders scattered around my small yard. I clean them every few days, and more often when it rains cuz the nectar dilutes a bit. I worry about them when it’s near or below freezing at night, and wonder if they all make it through the night. I never have tons of birds like you, but I hear them in the orange tree and see a constant flow of them especially in the early morning and evening hours if I’m outside. They are such a joy!
Last summer, we went through 140 pounds of sugar just for the hummingbirds and I thought that was a lot. I couldn't afford to feed your hummingbirds lol. I live in Northeast Arkansas and have been feeding the Ruby Reds for several years and the numbers have increased every year and I love it. Thank you and Gary for feeding so many birds of all kinds!
we seem to have 2 around every year, some year I see 3, mostly in the early morning and then toward evening. This past fall one came really close to me at the back porch, as if to say good bye, because after that they were gone. A few more would be nice, because I throw the food away to clean the 2 feeders (gave my third to my daughter because she had seen one). They seem to like my red runner bean blooms as well.

Absolutely amazing! I live in So. Cal. I was finally able to get a few hummingbirds to come, but then one day there was a “bully” who slowly chased all of them away😢 I had to stop feeding them. Just wondering if anyone has the same issue. How do you deal with bullies?
I had one who chased others all year long. Then one day I found a dead hummy and all of the regular hummies came back. I think he just exhausted himself and used too much energy.
I love your videos! Made me a DIY solar bucket water fountain (although I had to turn it off and put it up because its winter) from your video. And have put up multiple feeders. Your videos are so comforting and a inspiration for me! I'm at an apt now, but I can't wait to put up many feeders when me and my boyfriend get our own house. :) Thanks for making the content you do!
I need to bring one in today to thaw out... I have been setting one during the winter instead of 2 since the rufous migrate, but then I started leaving the 2nd one on the table where it's covered so the snow/ice wouldn't cover it, and they found it on the table ❤️ so I may have to start using 3 in spring
I need to start a feeder myself. there are quite a few hummingbirds in my area. it's sad to see it flying around looking for flowers. good things my neighbors' roses managed to survive the brutal winter so far.
I have been watching you for some time now and yes I subscribed long time ago. You just answered a question about the migration in your area. I live in north central Illinois and the hummers usually start to show about mid to late April and stay till early to med Nov. I only have about a dozen stay the season so only use about a gallon every third day. Even if they don't empty the feeders I will refill every three days as bees and ants tend to spoil the feed. I have seen some that dominate the feeders so i have spread them apart by as much 100ft.which seems to help. Enjoy the rain while you can, hope it relieves the drought.
I have one guy who is very territorial. I always have clean feeder and food and so he’s always there. He was always chasing away others but now I see that these two hummies annoy him and he gets really loud. Those two sometimes drink together as well. I think there is one more who is also trying to drink from this feeder. So I bought another feeder and looks like 2 of them have learned to drink from the new feeder but the main guy hasn’t learned yet. I removed the old feeder so everyone can learn to drink from the new feeder but my main hummie hasn’t and so I put both the feeders out and now he guards them both! They all hang out in the nearby tree branches and even chase each other there as well.
My local walmart ran out of the 25lb and 10lb bags of sugar and only have the 4lb bags. The walmart name brand of sugar is also cheaper than the c&h. I used to buy the 10lb bag for 6 dollars while the C&H is 8 dollars.
Robbie I have tons of hummingbirds too and just can’t stop ever feeding them. I have seed eaters too. I generally get my sugar at Costco but where do you order yours? I don’t think you mentioned. Thank you
I live in SF Bay Area and have two hummingbird feeders just like yours…we notice sporadic feeding but any birds is a plus. I use a recipe for sugar water like yours. As you know..we have had a deluge of water- as you have. Question is…does the rain effect their appearance and feeding? Should we try to put some covering over the feeders when it is raining? If so, what would you recommend?
Hi Robbie. It's Dori in San Marcos (northern San Diego county). If I heard you correctly, hummingbird northern migration will start in February? Is that correct? I want to make sure that I have a good idea when to expect my back patio to be overrun by little hummers heading north for the spring and summer months. Also, can you tell me when to expect orioles to start showing up ? I would like to get an oriole feeder for my yard, but don't want to put it and the food out too early. Thanks!
The hummingbirds will start moving when they know the weather is right. It’s not the rain that will stop them, as that brings flowers. It would be the cold. So you will have to keep a watch out for them, as far as the Orioles we have them here in March 1. The males show up first and about a week later the females show up. 😊❤️

Please no, you drink the tea, they can not digest that tea
Don't do it. Hummingbirds are very territorial. That's way too many birds. It's very dangerous for the birds. If you love love them leave them alone.
