@@alexb8689 It was a great time for music but I did grow up watching a war televised on the 6 o'clock news. Then if you didn't have the money to go to college, you worried about the draft. Plus, the riots of the mid 60's. I was drafted and ended up going to the war I watched with horror every night on TV. Yes, the music was great but society had its problems.

Hi S & M. The Dave Clark 5 knocked the Beatles 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' off the top of the U K charts in January 1964. The song was Glad All Over. A rip roaring 2:45 second song that helped fuel the first wave of the 'British Invasion' that swept North America in the Spring of 1964. I highly recommend it. RNB

Sorry but Dave, by his own admission, didn't write anything. He had a ghost writer named Ron Ryan who wrote Because. Ron's brother was the original guitarist for the DC5.
I do have a suggestion, turn the record over and play Theme Without a Name. It's one of the few times their guitarist Lenny Davidson gets to play a solo since most of the time it was the keyboard playing of Mike Smith or the sax of Dennis Payton. It also shows they weren't afraid to try different things - it is mostly an instrumental.
One final fact - Mike Smith did MOST of the lead vocals but 2 of the 4 remaining group members got to sing lead on songs that ended up in the top 10 (mostly in England). Dave sang lead in the chorus of The Red Balloon (#2 on the British charts), Lenny got to sing lead on Everybody Knows (they did 2 songs with the that title, this one was NOT written by the group but it also reached #2 on the charts in England).
In case you didn't know, Dave Clark formed the group, played the drums and sang, managed the group, and produced the records.

One of my favorite songs from the mid-60s. The group was a part of the so-called British Invasion -- a myriad of singers & bands from England coming to America on the wings of The Beatles' enormous popularity. They brought lots of great music, & musicians, too, including:
The Rolling Stones, the Who, Herman's Hermits, the Hollies, the Animals, & Cream, as well as solo singers like Dusty Springfield, Cilla Black, Petula Clark, Tom Jones, and Donovan -- to name but a few.

Dave Clark was a very close friend of our Freddie 💛Mercury. Freddie himself was a fan of Dave Clark, whose band was once seen as The Beatles’ biggest rivals. Clark and Mercury had been friends since meeting in 1976 after a Queen concert in London’s Hyde Park, though they became close working together in 1985 recording the soundtrack album for Clark’s musical Time, including the title song with its poignant line ‘We’ve not spoken about it at all, the fact that time is running out for us all’. ‘Freddie was larger than life and yet he was very kind and caring. The thing I really miss about him is his enthusiasm. He had an amazing sense of humor and he always made you laugh. He didn’t take life too seriously. He lifted your spirits up.’ Freddie once said, ‘I don’t expect to make old bones.’ But Clark dismisses this as the sort of off-the-cuff statement any young rock star might make.

The Dave Clark V were part of the "British Invasion" music of the early 1960's which of course started with The Beatles. I was around 13 years old when this band was popular. My older sister loved this group. Glad you appreciate this music. I don't even know what auto tone is. Heard a couple of people talk about that. Try some girl groups from the 1960's like The Chantelles, The Ronettes and Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. So much great, happy music from that era.

Dave Clark made a documentary about the British Invasion of which they were right on top, with the Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Yardbirds, Zombies, King Crimson, Gerry and the Pacemakers, and a few others. Dave was talking about how they were determined to raise the spirit of Americans, who was still in shock over the assassination of JFK in November of '63. So in January of '64, two months later, the charts went from Pat Boone to The Beatles, Dave Clark 5, and so on. It was foot-stompin' music, and their songs had weird echo effects. It catered to the youthful exuberance that characterized young boomers, who were shuffling off the shackles of a moribund and waning monoculture. Brilliant choice as always. Peace and love. db

My first official rock n roll pop concert was the DC5 in December of 1964 and I was a 8 year old 3rd grader and all you could hear were girls screaming. My mother was a ticket agent with the group that promoted them and my best friend from childhood ( 3 years old) till our early 20s went with me and my poor father had to endure the high ear piercing screams of the girls throughout the 30 minute show which you could not hear as in those days acts played thru the house PAs very primitive. That friend I’m about to lose to cancer and I just had to comment on this given present day.

this group could have been where the Beatles ended up. They were touring America the 6 months before the Beatles ever came to America. They sold 6 million records in that 6 months but due to touring commitments had to go back to Europe, which left Americans starving for this new kind of British rock. Then, the Beatles showed up... Dave Clark somehow got all the rights to the music he created, unheard of at the time, most bands were lucky to get 3-5 %..

At school, some kids liked The Dave Clark Five over The Beatles. The DC5 were from the London area and had a seemingly classier image and a mostly driven and power sound. The Beatles were from Northwestern seaport Liverpool where returning ship workers would bring back influential US Rock and Roll records. Because was a DC5 ballad that went to #3 on Billboard in 1964 (a great sound and feel, a personal favorite of mine). When CDs first came out, no DC5 material was available for years until Dave Clark, who owned the rights, authorized their release.

Per Wikipedia "Because" was written with the intention of being the Dave Clark Five's fifth US single, but the band's label, Epic Records, was initially resistant, believing the ballad strayed too far from the hit-making formula that had proven successful with the band's previous upbeat singles. In May 1964, the song was released in the UK as the B-side to "Can't You See That She's Mine". Clark insisted that "Because" be released as an A-side in the US, and Epic eventually agreed. KThe single entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart at number sixty in August, and peaked six weeks later at number three. "Because" became the band's fifth US single to sell more than one million copies.

NO reactors EVER do The Dave Clark Five. TRY "CAN'T YOU SEE THAT SHE'S MINE." Yes this was the '60s. THE DAVE CLARK FIVE, they were the first to come to the U.S. immediately after the BEATLES first came in 1964 and they ALSO debuted on THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW just as THE BEATLES did. They were PART of the "BRITISH INVASION" that the BEATLES STARTED. They had SO MANY GREAT SONGS! The single covers and album covers they showed in this video, I have them all, bought at the time they came out!! I am a HUGE BEATLES' fan, but I LOVE the DAVE CLARK FIVE TOO, plus ALL the OTHER "BRITISH INVASION" groups and singers, like: The Rolling Stones.(especially during the '60s)...The Kinks....Herman and the Hermits.....The Searchers....The Hollies.....The Yardbirds.....Chad and Jeremy......Peter and Gordon......Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders.....Gerry and the Pacemakers....Cilla Black.....Dusty Springfield.....Petula Clare.....Lulu....Sandy Shaw.....The Moody Blues.....Freddie and the Dreamers.....The Tremeloes..... Mary Hopkin....ALL from the Britain and the UK ( I KNOW I have MISSED some here. The '60s was from my teen to early 20s years (13 to 22...1960 through 1969) I would LOVEt to see you react to MORE of THE DAVE CLARK FIVE and THE BEATLES, plus the OTHER groups and singers I mentioned above. I GUARANTEE you will LIKE/LOVE ALL of them. LOVE you guys!!

Can you please react to anything by The Association, another great band from the 60s.

I think -- not 100% sure -- that the Beatles (Lennon/McCartney) wrote this song. I know they wrote for other British groups, like Peter & Gordon, too.
