Just found your channel and am very impressed with your explanations and ways of viewing strategy! Much more in depth than almost all channels I've seen, even more than Naroditsky's, in terms of big picture thinking and abstract concepts. Super super helpful and interesting. Looking fwd to going thru the archives and am sure the channel will continue to grow as others discover how good it is! Thanks!

Ah great! Welcome aboard 😊 Yes if you're after engine games or the classics, then this is the channel! 😊 Not that many modern games except the occasional ones / events that really grab me! Hope you enjoy the rest of the channel: there really is a lot by now!

Great video, thanks Matthew ! Echoes of Tal-Botvinnik WCh game in gxf3 !?
Regarding 11.h4 (not sure I got the move count right) : I think the move is prophylactic, not “aggressive”. Left to his own devices, Black will play …Nh5 and …Ng6 (plus …h6 and …Bg5 if needed) after which he’s strategically winning. 11.h4 prevents both …Ng6 and …Nh5 and is more flexible / desirable than 11.f4

Yes indeed I thought of that game too! Yes indeed, this h4-h5 idea is all about surrounding space so that Black can't use it for its own purposes. I'm not hugely into space-gaining as a player so it always surprises me a little when I see it happen like this!

Engines just won't get tired to show us that a lack dynamism or activity is a permanent weakness and not a temporary one. Well at least that's my interpretation

Yes indeed - that's definitely the big change that came about with NNs and NNUEs. Suddenly they could assess the long-term dynamics way better than us!

After c5 my thought was that dc is the obvious move but then you just get a recapture so instead you can throw in Bb5+ and then do dc but, you know, that's against the rules. Leela's weird moves are probably because it thinks the opponent has no way of improving their position so it can just sit there and play with the opponent like it's a cat playing with a mouse until it decides to get around to winning. As we all know having pawns on f2, f4, and h5 form an ideal fortress around the white king and mean you have nothing to worry about.

Yes Leela took its own good time to win!
