    Your questions makes sense - no worries. To answer it, you can only place an order in a spot that has an army in the location, so to further answer your question, you cannot consolidate your power in a spot with only a power token showing your control of the area.

  • @UndeadVikingVideos
    @UndeadVikingVideos  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good question! Throughout the game you will have chances to "bid" for several things, such as for fighting the wildlings or for the three different tracks of power. You use power tokens to put in your bid for these contests. The most common way to collect these tokens is to take the consolidate power action with units one the board.

    I really really loved this review! Your thoughts on Game of Thrones were really good! Several of your points you raised with the pages are ones that I completely agree with and the way you did them caused me to laugh out loud. Very well done!

    As Pyke is a land area you would only use one ship as a landbridge. The one on Pyke is supposed to be in the port I think.
    Also if the combat was won by the defender, the defending player’s
    Power and Order tokens (if any) in the area are unaffected. Which means they don't lose their march order as soon as they are marched upon.
    When a player grants support, his Support Order token is not
    removed after the combat. A Support Order may support any
    number of adjacent combats in the same game round.

  • @UndeadVikingVideos
    @UndeadVikingVideos  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, but let me clarify. Raid actions can only disrupt Consolidate Power, Support and other Raid actions. They have no affect on marching orders. If you use the "starred" Raid order, you can disrupt a defense order however.
    So yes, if there are three orders that your three raid orders can affect in those locations, you can do exactly what you are asking. Note - you also need to make sure you go BEFORE the other player. Turn order is very important in this game.

    i just got the game last week and played it yesterday for the first time. i am in love with it and everyone that enjoys it, too.
    big fan of the ice and fire universe anyway and always in for a good board game, especially strategy and building..
    so in that sense:

    was the retreat legal? In your example when the Lannisters lost the battle you moved all teh troops into an area,in retreat but I thought that this would violate that supply line rule, as you can never move pieces into areas through movement, mustering or retreat that would put you over the supply lie rule, right??...I dont have this game but I am trying to learn so just asking...

    • @TheJMorris4
      @TheJMorris4 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Arrow Catcher Games Its not a legal move what he did, you have to move all retreated troops to the same area and it can't violate the supply number you're on

  • @UndeadVikingVideos

    No problem. From time to time in the game you will have to a bid/vote. After a short discussion (maybe) Everyone secretly picks a certain number of tokens and puts them in their hand. Everyone reveals how many token they put in their hand simultaneously, and the whoever has the most wins. Ties are broken by whomever is in control of the iron throne at that time.

    I have been playing this game for years and have been reading the books for longer. I actually still have all three parts of the first edition and we still use those to play.
    Your review is spot on and your "spoiler comments" were masterful. I love that there is no randomness to the action and that it is all about the strategic overview.

    When army is defeated it is "routed" which means that all units are tipped to the side, their strength is reduced to 0 and they can't escape any more. And when you retreat, you have to respect supply limits, so no 5 units army for Lannister.
    Last but not least, sword icons on House Cards are applied only when you win the fight and towers when you lose.

  • @UndeadVikingVideos
    @UndeadVikingVideos  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    They are all worth reading - all of the books are really good, and in places they get really dull. The nice thing is that Crows and Dragons are both out now, and they are meant to be read right after one another as they are occurring at the same time. Consider this - at least you won't be reading Crows and then waiting five years for the next book to come out!

    I average around 10-15 hours playing boardgames/RPG's a week, sometimes more. I have played A&A and I am looking forward to the new version coming in July - something very satisfying about rolling a bunch of dice and rolling your tanks over your hapless enemies.
    Do you ever play at Paradox? I sometimes play boardgames in their gaming area.

    You bid power tokens for everything. When "Wildlings attack", when you bid on the influence tracks, when you move an area out of an area but want to maintain control of it, you use power tokens.

    Good review overall. I know someone that recently got the game and haven't actually got around to playing it yet as there is a number of other games being played currently that are being played at the moment like Spartacus. It seems like a helpful review to get at least a basic idea of the game.

    You resolve the orders one by one, not all at the same time. What I mean is that depending on your position on the Throne (first, second, etc.) you resolve the commands one by one, not all of them at once. All the players take turn in resolving the commands, first is the player closest to the throne, then the next one, etc... once everybody has resolved a march order, they continue resolving their orders, one by one.
    And you play your house cards symbols wrong.

  • @ThePaoll
    @ThePaoll 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I noticed some mistakes during the combat explanation. First, At 39:34, when a unit retreats, you have to lay down her to signify that this unit is unavailable until the next turn. Meaning that if an other greyjoy attack reiterates in the retreat region and if the lannisters loose again, the lay down units are taken out. Second, the march orders must be resolved one by one !in this case ->First One Greyjoy, One For Stark, One for Lannister and THEN Greyjoy again (second march order), Stark, etc

    My experience with this board game was the other way around. My first contact with asoiaf universe was this board game and after playing it extensively I really got into it and soon after that i found out that HBO is making a show and naturally I started watching it. It really didnt bother me that I was unfamiliar with asoiaf when I first bought this board game, though that might be due to the fact that two of my friends who I played this with have read it and they would always explain some of the story to the rest of us who didnt read it.
    BTW It really sucks they didnt make 2nd edition of a storm of swords expansion, it is still our favourite way of playing got ;)

    I just picked up the A&A Pacific 1940 from Paradox and I have A&A Europe 1940 on the way from Ebay. They of course combine to make a huge game of A&A Global 1940, up to 9-10 players possible. Other than that we also play D&D 2nd edition. I never played at Paradox actually. It would be tough for my group to forgo the various ales we tend to throw back while playing. Paradox is a buzz of activity though every time I go there.

  • @nd3g681
    @nd3g681 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just picked up this game and have been reading through the rules. There are a couple of areas where your explanation differs from the rules. For example: 1) As per the rule book, if the Watch defeats the Wildlings the Wildling marker is reset to "0" regardless of the strength of their attack (12 or lower). 2) In your battle scenario you state that units can retreat into friendly or neutral territory but I take neutral territory to mean those territories with neutral force markers on them.

  • @paillote

    Question: At minute 44, when the Lannister Army retreats to Crackclaw Point, after being defeated by the Starks they end up with an army of size 5, which is never allowed by the supply track.
    So my questions are: When should the supply track be respected?. If the answer is "only when they card says "adjust armies" ", then why the author of the video says that "sometimes you are waiting for a supply card to increase your armies" so that you can have more and larger armies.

    • @ambriska
      @ambriska 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      paillote Good observation. A little misstake by the reviewer. You are never allowed to have a bigger army size than allowed by your current place on the supply track. An army of 5 units is never possible. If you can't retreat to a location withouth exceeding your supply limit, you have to kill a unit or more until allowed.

    I bought this the other day because my local game shop was doing a black Friday sale, and one thing I noticed that bothered me a bit was how similar the Baratheon and Martell unit pieces look. Baratheon is yellow while Martell is gold, which makes them hard to tell apart in low light. Would have been nice if Martell was orange or copper, I might look into getting some model paint.

    I missed most of your ending summary, as I was far more intrigued by the 'spoilers'.

    Sorry to be off topic, but I'm looking for a board game I enjoyed as a child, and was hoping someone here could help. It was played on a board with hexagons, and you were an adventurer, and ... hm ... During your combat example you have Lannister retreat into a friendly area creating what looks like a super army. Just want to point out to viewers that you can exceed your army allowable size during a retreat and must be destroyed if there is no suitable area in which to retreat. Retreating/routed units must be turned on their side to show that they have no combat strength. They cannot be used as casualties if the area they retreated to is attacked and cannot march/support.

    My friends aren't real gamers, (console, pc, boardgames) but I invited them over for some beers and a game of Catan. I let them win and they had fun, few weeks later they ask me when we can play again, it's not so much the game but the gathering. Now I showed them GoT a bit and let them get comfortable with it and now I'm going to introduce them to the boardgame! So, you can try to win them over.

    If they have more than one march orders, the players take turn in resolving them. Not one player resolving all of his march or other orders, and then the next player. They take turns, one by one, order by order :)

    Jon Snow is Azor Ahai, Howland Reed will reveal that he is Lyannas Bastard (with targ prince) as why else would she be guarded by the kingsguard. Melisandre will do her thing (think crows eye but BIGGER) and he will be one of Danys dragon riders. but thats just one of the many theories!

    One question:
    How do alliances work? You mentioned in your video about Greyjoy and Stark teaming up against the Lannisters, but I imagine if you're at a table with 5 friends there isn't really much privacy to discuss the tactics in that sense.
    Seems like a very good game can't wait for mine to arrive!

  • @treatmentjoe1218

    I think theres a mistake in the first round he plays, where he resolves the Greyjoy march orders all at once, while in the rulebook it states that you should follow turn order to resolve one order (whichever it is) at a time, and if any house doesnt have this particular order type, it is skipped. So, if I'm right (which i may not be) the Greyjoys can attack the lannisters but then they should wait for both Stark and Lannister to resolve one march order each before resolving his final march order. Can anyone verify this?? :)

I do have one question though, and if you covered this I'm sorry, I must have missed it, but: what does it mean to consolidate power? Does it move you forward on a track? Is it its own point system? I just don't know what it means.

    Other than disagreeing about character and House preferences, thanks for the video and analysis. I always research games before buying, and this looks like a winner. The one thing that surprised/disappointed me about the game was the lack of a Targaryen faction/House. It is understandable, considering board size and lack of opposing factions (other than Dothraki), but they are my 2nd favorite House and important to the story, so it sucks they aren't included. They are in the LCG though.

    2) Sandor isn't dead. He was the big, hooded monk Brienne saw. "The Hound" is dead.
    3) John becomes Ghost. That was the whole point of the Prologue to Feast for Crows with Varymyr Sixskins (showing what happens to a warg when he dies). Also, the last thing John did before he died was cry out for Ghost.

    *Note: Spoiler Alert(s)*
    A couple of things:
    1) Sorry, "Cold Hands" is most definitely Benjen.
    2) Sandor's not coming back to life, so he won't be able to kill Ser Robert Strong
    3) I think Jon Snow leaves his skin and jumps into the giant's skin (his name escapes me), and kills his brothers who are attempting to kill him. His old body survives with the help of some wildling techniques.

    I know this has been up a while, but I just got the game and I have a few questions, but I think I know the answer. When Lanister was getting attacked (around 43:00 or so) Lanister had to retreat and you retreated them into an area with some of his pieces there already putting 4 or 5 guys there. He couldn't put them there if his supply was not high enough, right? What happens if they have no place to go, death? Can they move into a friendly territory and then suffer the supply track? (ex. 2 knights get defeated and have to retreat. They retreat into an area with 3 of their footmen. Can you then kill the footmen to keep the knights so to stay legal with the supply track? Or,does that mean they can't move in and therefore they die?) Thanks.

    • @Rpierce1892
      @Rpierce1892 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was reading and found Jordan Morris replying to my question. "Its not a legal move what he did, you have to move all retreated troops to the same area and it can't violate the supply number you're on"
      But that still leaves some of my question unanswered about when do you have to suffer the supply track. After you move in or before and can they move 1 in and kill the rest? I assume so on the last.

    I haven't seen the show or read the books and I have never played a game like this (usually stick with the classics like Monopoly or Yahtzee) but this game is fantastic. It's confusing as hell the first time you play and the first few times you will come into situations where a lot of manual reading is required but once you get the hang of it it's so much fun. I play a 4 player game and we keep notepads to pass notes to each other about our alliances and plans. Luckily got the game for $12 too

    Per the rules, you can never move units/retreat in a way that would make an army or the number of armies go over what is allowed by the supply limit. Under no circumstances would an army of greater than 5 units be allowable, because even if you have 6 on the supply track, you can never have more than 4 units in an army. My impression was that he was doing a quick and combat example, but he didn't really show clearly in the video what happens to units when armies are routed or have to retreat.

    I agree with all the things you held up. Especially how boring those silver-haired chapters are. Really, who cares about that whole area? Worse is that a lot of the more interesting character's have been interwoven there, meaning I might have to start caring slightly.

    It's interesting because the friend of mine that most wanted this game hasn't watched a single episode, or read a single book. I haven't had the chance to read the novels, I've had Uni readings and all that stuff. So yeah. The HBO series is AWESOME

    At 41:56 there I notice that you placed a power token. Lets say Lannister was before me on that turn and I make that move (move army out to attack lannisters and tywin) In the next round if I place a support in that newly captured area and lannister attack that power token can the greyjoy army support it?

    You forget to route the defeated lannister items once they retreat. Very important.

    Does this game hold up? Has it been replaced by anything?

      It still holds up - it is still a long game, but when you have 4+ people and they know what they are in for, it is very good

    How do you deside who is first to play out their turn? why wasnt lannister first or stark? is it something you deside yourself or is there a cart for it?

    Yes to your Daenarys chapters comment... every time i see her name pop up on the chapter heading a groan and have a 15 second internal debate of wondering if i should skip her chapters or not. I know she'll be important later and G.R.R. Martin's writing style is good enough that i enjoy them anyways but i find them to be both predictable and boring almost every time i have to read them. Plus they move so slowly really dragging the pacing of the books down.

    And after house Lannister was attacked by Greyjoy, shouldnt the 2 pawns be on their side so they cant be used for attack (if lannister used a march token)?
