The model we have here it's called Laccetto Gommini and it retails for $495 in the US. It is of course made in Italy but other than the fact that it has some laces, leathers, and rubber nub sole, there's really not much more information on their website. Considering, it's almost $500 expensive, I find that quite disappointing.
The shoe has the characteristic rubber pebble nubs that allow the shoe the same flexibility as it would be with an all leather sole. At the same time, it lasts longer than a just leather sole moccasin. Of course, the lifespan is still shorter compared to a regular men's dress shoe with a leather sole or rubber sole.
Because $495 is quite a bit of money for just a driving shoe, a lot of men also wear them as casual shoes, especially during the summer. The problem is without the structured heel cap and toe cap, they're not ideal for walking. They get bigger and the leather sole wears out a lot faster.
The one we ordered comes in a nice blue and I think it's made of a shrunken calf leather or cowhide, again, nothing's mentioned on the website but if you take a closer look, you can see it has somewhat of a scotch grain texture but it's not achieved by embossing it but simply by shrinking the leather. I find it's quite nice and it's also a little more durable than suede leather which is also something they offer.
It's really nothing special on the inside and for the price, I would have hoped for a bit more contrast or something interesting. The insole is covered with one piece of leather lining and underneath, you can find a rubber wedge that is a little cushier and more comfortable to stand in them. At the same time, it's not made all of leather like the most high-quality men's dress shoes, for example.
Each pair of Tod's mocs is made out of 35 pieces in a hundred steps.
So the big question, are Tod's mocs worth it?
First, let's look at the cons.
To me, one of the biggest cons is that it's not a shoe
that will last me 15 or 20 years if I regularly wear it because it has this leather sole with the rubber pebbles which is super flexible but it also wears out very quickly if I use it in everyday wear.
Also, it's not a shoe you want to wear when it's wet outside because the water will go right through the leather up onto your socks and feet which is quite uncomfortable.
At the end of the day, buying Tod's driving mocs is still mostly a brand buy. Fortunately, the Tod's branding is not obnoxious.
Looking at the shoe, the construction method, the materials that go into it, I think it should retail more at a 200 to 250 dollar price range and not at a 500 dollar price range. But of course, when it comes to pricing, branding is everything and Tod's does a fantastic job in positioning their brand and maintaining high prices.
    So what are the pros?
Even though the shoe can wear out pretty quickly, the style itself is rather timeless and you'll be able to wear it in 10 or 20 years down the line. Even though you would assume other brands can simply replicate the style, I still think Tod's has an edge when it comes to their styling versus other brands in the market.
One of the biggest pros of Tod's mocs is probably that they come in a large number of colors in different leathers including suede and exotic skins such as crocodile. To my knowledge, there is no other brand that offers such a wide range.
So ultimately, are they worth it to me?

Thanks for the Tods vid, it was one that I requested. The Tods competitors at lower price points are invariably stiffer leathers and you may very well get blisters even with socks. On the other hand, the Tods driving moc is indeed a disposable shoe, as you so aptly state. I bought a pair in the Via Condotti on the first day of a Roman autumn. After walking about 200 miles in them, they were toast, quite true, but they were as comfortable as a pair of kid gloves. At $2.50 a mile, it was worth every penny. Cheers.

I agree with your assessment. I just purchased a pair of Allen Edmond’s driving shoes, beautiful orange suede moccasin and extremely comfortable and with a Goodyear Welt for ease of putting on a new sole. These shoes retailed at around $275 and with AE’s clearance price, I picked them up for well under $100.00. As I mentioned, these shoes are very, very comfortable and i like the orange color, (seasonal Spring and Summer, Fall shoe), thus I can’t see spending $400-$500 for a pair of Tod’s. Thanks for producing this video. Very well done!

I think the stretching can be shrunk back by playing the wet shoes on a dryer shelf or in a place where plenty of warm air flows. This works on any leather, and, if gently done, will not lead to excessive stiffness or shrinkage. I had a dryer with such a shelf. The shelf attached via a keel that fit in place of the lint screen, just inside the dryer door. The shelf was designed for placing shoes or sweaters for drying flat and not tumbling.

I must actually disagree with that conclusion (not worth it) to some extent, because it depends on how you wear them, care for them and what's your attitude. I own quite a few gomminos (like 10ish, and I do wear them a lot) and my oldest ones are ~10 years old. Here is why:
I agree, the rubber soles do wear out in 1-2 seasons. I disagree with 4:35 - 4:40 that they cannot be mended: When going for a TOD's gommino, one knows that the soles will wear out quickly. But a TOD's has multiple lives. A good cobbler will easily replace the knobs with a thin (but long-lasting) rubber split sole. Almost the same feeling when walking with them. Their upper leather quality is superb and, when cared for properly, they look like new even after several years. So, provided you take the rubber sole issue for granted, they are quite long-lasting and worth it.
My oldest pair has been re-soled three times by now. Admittedly, this pair also needed a few stitches at the heels and toes after 7 years or so, but that's a bit like with an old Barbour jacket - it depends on your attitude ;)

The fact that you dedicated all video to Tod's means they are absolutely worth the money. It's exactly the same like debating if Ferrari is worth the money... for absolute most it isn't, but for some few that is exactly what doctor has prescribed.

Just got these in blue for 299$!. Although this may be a “disposable shoe” no other shoe has the same presence on the foot. Ive seen and had many moccasins/dress shoes, and i can easily say this is as beautiful and elegant as it gets. If you can get them for a reasonable price and afford to not wear them everyday, they are worth it.

One thing worth mentioning on the Tod's mocs, as opposed to some of the other items in this series like Hermes ties, Montblanc fountain pens, and Gucci loafers, is that they can often be found at a significant discount with some research. I have a pair of these in burgundy calf and love them for the $200 that I paid for them, but would I pay $500? I agree with you, Raphael--absolutely not.

I love tod's on preowned market. speaking for the ladies only.
also size-wise, i can wear men's shoe also so have worn enough discounted mocassins with reasonable price. i like what tod's offers color/design-wise to the ladies as a high-end brand: less crazy palette and good quality.
very reasonable for guys to opt for other brands given the price-point v. quality.

Really appreciate the review. It is very nice to see the illustration of how the item is put together. I have been contemplating an indoor shoe/ moccasin myself. It is a delicate balance. This is clearly intended as a driving (hence, indoor) shoe. Great for when you are rocking your hard soled fine shoes, boots, or the feminine equivalent.

Tod's has the pebble and full rubber/+pebble soles. Particularly in the summer you should not wear the same shoe day after day. I've had my same pair of Tods moccasin for close to twenty years. The rubber doesn't degrade and crumble. The material and stitching are of the highest quality in terms of durability. I wear mine on average once a week during the summer occasionally in the winter - going on now for closed to twenty-years. In late 2019 ordered a pair of Tod's suede ankle boots, very nicely made.

I don't know why but brand is gate keeping details on making of shoes and other products for in store, sales experience. I work in tods and sales staff taught how to introduce certain items. Gommini are made from single peace of leather which is uncommon and increases exclusivity of them, other than that, it's ok.

I bought a pair of driving mocs for $20 and I absolutely love them. And they look much nicer than those, too.

A nice relaxed shoe if you have money to burn. Not a good investment. (However, if you are a shoe nut, they could last 10 years if only worn in spring/summer and you have a rotation of thirty pairs of shoes.) :-/

But the other shoes such as sneakers and the like have a very good quality. You should always remember that the Gomminos are only for the summer and not for rain or the like. I have gomminos from Tods and they are 10 years old and I wear them a lot in the summer and you still look good. You always have to take care of them and I think the quality is good for this type of shoe

The shoe isn’t worth the money. I buy them slightly used and pay between 20-40€. They’re not for walking around but for what I paid I use them as a Summer shoe. The front of the shoe gets scuffed because the rubber sole doesn’t protect the leather at the toe. I have 1 pr. that I got resoled and had the sole extended to cover the toe area. That’s the only way to prolong the wear. They’re not made to be resoled. This is truly a 1-2 season shoe. Or better a throwaway shoe. They’re very comfortable and look great. The sizing is a problem because they’re European meaning a size 8,5 is the equivalent of a 42,5 or a 9 -9,5 is a 43. It’s hard to find half sizes but since they expand to the foot it’s better to buy a size smaller and they’ll fit like a glove. I have 3 pr. Mocs , 1 pr. loafers and 1 pr. Chukka boots. With the enclosed leather shoes I tend to buy them the exact size I need because they don’t stretch out as much. Considering I pay 1/10 the price of a new pr. I get the enjoyment of wearing a Cult shoe without flipping the money. So many people have more money, or maybe not, but many get the thrill of spending a lot of money on things to later sell them for almost nothing in comparison. I respect that because we are a throw away Society. They get the enjoyment of spending the money and I enjoy buying expensive Cashmere sweaters, Shoes or whatever that are nearly brand new, for little cash. So one hand washes the other. So that’ll my opinion. Try to find a slightly used pr. and save your money for something else. I learned many years ago from my Mom to appreciate Second Hand.
