  • Me and my mate Steve recently flew from London to Zanzibar via Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. We flew on Ethiopian Airlines on one of their newest Airbus A350s. Ethiopian presented the opportunity to bid for an upgrade to Business Class and, dear viewer, I couldn't resist and our bid hit, so we were able to travel in their premium cabin.
    Not only a premium cabin, but Ethiopian's best premium cabin with all aisle access and the newest version of their business class seat.
    So what was the experience like? At Heathrow, on board and on arrival into Addis Ababa? Well, watch the video to find out!

    Used Ethiopian to Malawi via Addis last month, which was my first trip using Ethiopian Airlines. Modern comfortable aircraft, decent accommodation and good food, so no complaints on that front. Paying for WiFi was relatively inexpensive, however it wasn’t working on either of the trip legs - and I had paid in advance when I purchased the tickets.
    My only complaint is that the Ethiopian website is a nightmare to negotiate, and really needs a complete make over.

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers John - how was Malawi? It's on my radar and as Ethiopian generates a good haul of points, its on the shortlist as a place to go when I need to renew my status... "My mate Steve" actually made this booking so I didn't spend much time on the website, although I didn't think the upgrade bid section was too bad... Although I have spotted the same mechanism with other travel providers (most recently Celebrity cruises!) so that bit is probably a plug in... Thanks for watching!

      @@MattsPlanet Have flown with Ethiopian to Mozambique the only thing wrong was on the return journey where there was a long stop over at Addis airport before catching flight back to the UK , I have been to Malawi in 2016 and am planning on going back in December the best thing to do as far as booking flights goes is try to book as soon as you are able to where you get the flights much cheaper I have no problem negotiating Ethiopian airlines website pretty straight forward

      @@MrBrumlad you either get a 2 hour connection in Addis or a 12 hour 1... Hopefully Ethiopian can go to 2 daily flights to London so this stops being a problem. I wouldn't mind 12 hours in Addis if it meant I could have a bit of a look round - during the day of course not overnight...

    Ethiopian Airlines! Love the new A350. I have memories of going on an Ethiopian Airlines 707 in 1979 (or 1980?) when I was 7 years old. I was travelling with my mum and brother from London Heathrow to Rome via Paris. Due to a bomb scare the flight was delayed for 24 hours. Strange, though being so young and loving planes at such a young age, I loved the flight and the delay. For years I remembered the beautiful colours and the planes interior including the seating. Around the middle of the plane, 6 seats on both sides were facing each other with a table in between (some passengers therefore flying backwards). Amazing memories..

      Fantastic! Don't think I ever flew on a 707 but I have similar, very vivid memories of my first time on a 747. Ethiopian flying fifth (sixth? seventh?) freedom routes within Europe? Fantastic!!!

    Nice to see you take a path less travelled on this report. Between the catering, seating and service Ethiopian seems to be a pretty good airline, although I reckon £450 which a bit dear given the length of the flight. Personally, I only do upgrades if they're "free" (i.e. points upgrade on Avios or Qantas) or when the distances involved are great. For instance, spending $650 USD + 35,000 United miles to upgrade LHR to SYD (via LAX) represented decent value considering I spent 27 hours in Polaris business class and another 5 hours at the Polaris lounge at LAX. I would also be curious to see if Ethiopian provides upgrade offers at check-in and in the manage booking phase as United and some other airlines do. Perhaps the upgrade would've been less during OLCI? One other thing I would be curious about is how the upgrades work in terms of milage and status accrual. I know United would often provide the additional miles (reward + status) when making a paid upgrade during check-in., but have been on flights with Lufthansa where my upgrade offer was accepted but I didn't receive anything other than the upgrade (i.e. no additional miles). One other note, I hope they keep with the masking requirement. I know it's an absolute pain to wear them but quite frankly COVID is all around and that mask is the only protection we've got left. I myself have a suppressed immune system and an autoimmune disease meaning when I travel not only do I need to wear a mask, but it needs to be a N95 mask (or better) just to be safe. I think if we got rid of the testing requirements globally but kept going with the mask, we could make travel a lot safer for most people and a heck of a lot more convenient too!

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate! This was the first trip I'd done with "my mate Steve" for several years and we perhaps got a little carried away with the upgrade.... I also wanted to do a longer flight in business so was perhaps a little more disposed to pay the money than I might otherwise have been. Seen a few business class reviews on Ethiopian between their European stops (Oslo to Stockholm, that sort of thing) where you get to see the seat but not the service so I wanted to cover the "full" experience. And no, we didn't get any points over and above the class we'd booked (I'm with Aegean, he's with Turkish). Which was the same when I flew Aegean... And was a little annoying...
      In the UK, the position on masking has shifted quite significantly - I don't particularly want to debate the point here (much more fun to do so with a beer in hand!) but it is going to remain a controversial issue for some time to come! Cheers.

Very pleased that this video is doing so well - BA and Virgin stuff has always done the best in the past so for a less well known airline video to do so well is very inspiring and gives me the green flag to travel more paths less covered...

    Top notch stuff as usual Matt. The seat itself and configuration looked very good. It's always a bit of a dilemma knowing how much to spend on an upgrade and there are several factors to take into account, but the main ones for me (apart from the price) are whether it's an overnight flight and how long I'll actually have at my destination.

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks - this upgrade decision was probably taken with the heart as much as the head. The start of my first trip for a while with "my mate Steve" and we wanted to start with a bang!!! But £500 to get a slightly better sleep for 3 hours is probably not great value!

    Ethiopian Airlines is the pride of Africa and testimony to the fact that Africa is not a poor continent. The airline boasts more aircraft than many European Airlines such as Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Air Belgium and even Air Portugal. It ranks at par with Singapore Airlines in terms of size and is providing the same top noth quality service. Thank you very much and enjoy your evening 🤗🤗

    In the end the appraisal that it wasn’t worth the cost of the upgrade is the assessment I’d have made . For me it would have just been because I’m cheap and I really need to feel there is value . I do have a suggestion which is based on your experience and ability to communicate these experiences . I don’t want to “Get one over “ on the airlines or their staff . I respect their position and the jobs they do. For me understanding and skillfully applying the benefits of gold status would be an interesting video . Getting maximum benefit with the least cost but not ruffling any feathers or looking like a cheap Charlie .

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Scott. As I've said in a few replies to comments, I was keen to show the full business class experience rather than the limited experience others have shown on short Ethiopian hops between European cities so was probably more disposed to pay the money for that reason... Otherwise £500 is a decent weekend away!
      Drafting my "how you can get to Star Alliance gold for £xxx" video today... Thanks for the compliment about communication, but can you give an example of what you might see as "getting one over"? I'm sure we would always respect the staff and the fact that they are trying hard to do a good job, but if the airline structures something in a way that allows you to "take advantage", surely it's fair enough to do so? Obviously getting so drunk in the lounge you the crew is uncomfortable dealing with you would be an example of taking advantage of status inappropriately!! Cheers - really interesting comment. Thanks!

    hey matt, ive got about 400k avois and an ihg 241 night and im amb. I'm travelling alone and want a cheap trip moneywise but luxe locationwise. (not necc beach/or place like mauritius).what do u recommend for a 2night ihg that I could live in lap of luxury for 2 days and then go cheaper after?

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Orion! Not sure what "Im amb" means but I think I can answer... Two parts... Getting somewhere then staying somewhere. I'd take a close look at Qatar now avios are interchangable with their scheme. Good pricing on redemptions and good availability when I looked recently. Gives you lots of choices of places to go. And perhaps start your trip in Dublin to save the UK APD... Cracking airline to fly too... Dublin to Australia is (I think) 90k avios one way so having 400,000 gives you some real options!!!
      Then where to go??? Really tough to advise but I guess you'd filter options to Six Senses, Regent or Interconti branded locations, which may produce your shortlist... Sydney is nice!!! And its open too, which has to be a consideration... Not much of Far East Asia is "easy" to visit yet. Places on my shortlist are Goa and Mombassa - beachy but with some surrounding culture. Even Doha itself is worth a visit - I prefer it to Dubai in many ways but neither of them work for some people!!
      On BA, its usually not too hard to find availability for redemptions on the East Coast. New York, Washington and Boston all have luxury hotel options and lots to do....
      Zanzibar has no IHG properties, so that wouldn't be an option, but I think there's some real interesting stuff out there if the Qatar shuffle works for you... Good luck with the search - research and booking is part of the trip so make sure you enjoy it - and let me know!!!

    • @MattsPlanet
      @MattsPlanet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think everywhere in the world is worth a visit but Ethiopian is clearly designed to be a connection oriented airline with Addis just a convenient location to facilitate a one stop trip to almost everywhere you'd want to go in Africa. You can also double back to West Africa through Addis although that makes it a long journey... Shorter journey to South Africa than via the Middle East through. Thanks for watching!

      @@HabA-qn1nv Fair comment!!! Some people only ever rave about flights and the airlines love it and sometimes give free flights to get more positive reviews. I try to be independent and to point out shortcomings as well as the good stuff... I think people want to see an unvarnished review. And it is a British trait to be a bit negative... There's a brilliant British response to most questions - "Not Too Bad". Which means its bad, but not too bad!! Not so bad as to be unbearable, but still, basically, bad!! "How was your wedding?" "Not too bad".... Thanks for the comment!
