    I taught in Greensboro for years not far from this Woolworths (which is a civil rights museum today). This was one of the purest and ultimately most effective acts of peaceful protest that basically kicked off the civil rights movement in the south.
    The brilliant thing they did was to first buy some small items from the store before sitting down at the counter, asking to be served, and then silently attending to their schoolwork. When they were denied service, they pointed out that Woolworths was only too happy to sell them all notebooks and pencils just a few minutes earlier.
    They held their ground and kept coming back. Other followed, and they changed the world.
