Varanasi (aka Kashi) is one of the oldest living cities in the world with continuous habitation for more than 3000 years. It was always a hub of culture, religion, art and education. Also, during the Kashi Mahajanapada and the Gahadavala Dynasty, Varanasi was also a political capital. During the reign of Emperor Harshavardha in the 7th century, Varanasi became the 2nd largest of India with more than 210,000 people living there and it maintained this population for many centuries. The City had many temples buy due to the Islamic invasions, they were repeatedly destroyed. Only 1 temple built before the 1780s still survives in Varanasi and that is the 10th century small Kardameshwar Mahadev Temple. The Adi Vishveshwar Temple and Krutti Vishveshwar Temples were destroyed in the 1680s by Aurangzeb and on top of them he built the Gyanvapi and Alamgiri Mosques. Then Maharani Ahilya Bai, in the 1780s, rebuilt the Kashi Vishvanath Temple next to the old ruined Adi Vishveshwar Temple. The Native Maratha Empire also rebuilt the Ghats to their present form.
