Did a 6 month tour of Belize 92/93. It was classed as a operational tour back then. Jungle patrols, border patrols & OPs. Did a few river crossings. However we didn’t have a guide rope & floatation aids like the guys in the video. We attached 4 bergans together with karibiners. We crossed with 2 men at the front & the other 2 at the back with rifles on top of the bergans. I was 18 at the time but Belize turned you into a switched on soldier. 🇬🇧🏴
@@gimpygunner7327 Thanks for your response. I was researching how commandos would cross rivers with a light load. I thought they’d use a floatation vest like in this video, so your method is surprising. You could also drop the Bergman’s into plastic bags which would be light to carry.
Yep, I was just about to make the comment, 'what, river crossings with life preservers?' the woke army ehh? Even I was required to cross in the nuddy with bergen in a black bag....not the done thing for a man of the cloth you understand! If the Padre did it why not a precious millennial?
I bet the water was wetter in your day too was it?? 😂😂 So Rambo! What would you do if you came under contact with your clothes in your "black bin bag"??? 😂😂 I suppose there was no danger in river crossing back in your day stagging on BAOR though!
@@garagenigel You didn't notice then that this was a non-contact river crossing? That the PA required afterwards was more than merely putting your DRY clothes back on in preparation for an advance to contact? As for me, as a non-com, I never needed to be Rambo. Never did stag on in BAOR, but three tours with 16 losses (the names of whom I still carry around in my wallet in memory) I personally conducted 5 funerals, 3 repatriations from theatre, one of my drivers was killed by a mortar, another is disabled. But I admit I never really saw any action myself! I am allowed to question the resillence of the modern generation of soldiers!
Thank GOD in the Irish army they never pressed us like you guys do in the UK. I'm not a strong swimmer at all and would be freaked if I had to swim with my kit across croc infested waters. In general after recruit training you are more or less left alone, (in IRELAND), yeah there are exercises and courses but nothing like crocodile infested waters.
The number of Irish citizens in the British military is greater than the size of the entire Irish Defence Force ... so not all Mick's are afraid of crocodiles!
@@JammyDodger45 Are you sure about that? There are around 10K soldiers in the permanent defence forces (of IRELAND). so you think that there are more than 10K Irish CITIZENS in the British army? There are around 100 or so southerners serving in the British army, max twice that. You are talking about "citizens"? Maybe sons and grandsons and great grandsons of Irish that emigrated to England but not citizens.
@@stephenoneill2844 - you're absolutely right, I wasn't being 100% literal it was more a dig at the crocodile statement! My bad. A handful of years ago I was in a Manpower position in the MoD and we had +/-1000 Irish born members of the British military, I don't suppose it's changed much in the intervening decade.
@@JammyDodger45 Ah, I see my friend lol. I remember seeing a documentary about Southerns that go up North to Join up (it said that the number was in the few hundreds mark). I couldn't help but envy them and wish that I had the balls to sign up too. Thanks for that mate, take care.
Jungle warfare training is the ultimate adjacent misery for a soldier...nothing on your body is dry all day long thru the exercise...not even your Axxhole.

I was out there in 93 May I think on Holdfast Camp, not a bad 6 months apart from the humidity, flies, beetles, etc.
I understand a bergan is a rucksack. How did they stay afloat?
You will be surprised mate. Despite the weight of it.

Great watching are UK lads training! Looks challenging ❤🇬🇧
Loved my tour of Belize in '86 with 3 Queens Recce. Fantastic time and loved the jungle
Which Camp Holdfast ?
@FHIPrincePeter PG then APC
Back in the eighties, we stripped butt naked and everything except the rifle went into a black bin bag which served as the float.

So you’re saying watching all your male friends go skinny dipping is better then what is shown in the video?

Been there. Done that. Got the tshirt. LOL
Crocs were the least of my worries, it was the necessity of a tight condom & secure a bung up the backside which concerned me most.
Nobody asked
The Royal Angling regiment - watch it with subtitles. It’s hilarious 😂
Go The Vikings! Greetings from a Poacher vet.
😎 Cool 😎
no bridge?
556 vs croc would love to see that
Is it an American 556 or a Russian 556 ? 😂
The proud tradition of British Armed forces hopefully will NOT be let down by their politicians due to lack of support.
How about the real jungle robots

Soldiers are a big investment and losing a squad to a river because they didn't have a floatation aid is a silly waste
The British army should be at home protecting their own borders with thousands of illegal Immigrants coming into Britain every month
