yes but she initially was taught to sing and play guitar by her mother who performed to bring people to church. Rosetta was a huge success travelling with her mother and did indeed bring a lot of folks into church. She might say that was all the credit she needed

@@ButOneThingIsNeedful It’s an interesting question. Sister Jackson was born in 1911 and Sister Tharpe was born in 1915. Sister Tharpe’s first hits (4) were in 1938 and Sister Jackson’s first hit was 1947. That probably doesn’t tell the story, because there was no social media or internet or the tv ownership there was later. I’m thinking (but please correct me if I’m wrong) that Ms. Jackson had the more significant, if later, influence on gospel blues and gospel, in general, and Ms. Tharpe had the larger influence on rock and roll. The latter certainly was the prime mover in the UK.
@@Sportshooter-rr4iw I was simply responding to your "she was first" statement, which I think needed clarifying. Ms. Tharpe's music combined gospel content with a musical style you might call 'proto-rock & roll'. If you were referring just to the latter, then sure, I agree. But if you include the gospel side, then it's different. Plus there is the distinction between "hits" as you say (influence) and performance. I don't think you can say Rosetta Tharpe was performing gospel before Mahalia Jackson. In fact, gospel had been being 'performed' in black churches, both group & solo numbers, for many decades. Who knows for how long?
Interesting, I just checked Wikipedia and it says of Mahalia Jackson: "widely considered one of the most influential vocalists of the 20th century". So I guess even in terms of influence the matter is debatable. Influential in what way? On what? Bottom line: Both great. :)
Why pick on the Beatles, why not Rolling Stones. The Beatles injected a very heavy dose of their 'Englishness' in their music especially in their middle/later period while the RS were overwhelmingly blues-based throughout. ;)
She was playing these songs in the swing era 1949. She is the monarch of Rock and Roll, by combining swing, jazz, blues long before Berry, Elvis, Lewis...all of them She created the sound and the feel, of American music, American soul, and will always be an important chapter in American exceptionalism.
The real founder of rock n roll. She came first and she deserves credit.
