  • On tonight's episode we have Rosendo back, he is going to be stick welding some structural I-beams at heights. The root will be done with SMAW 6010 and the cap with SMAW 7018. To get up to the elevated work area he will be using the Genie 12kw Lift Power Welder-Ready. To learn more about this Genie visit:

    Hopefully nxt month i can get myself a new miller or Lincoln generator welder.... i miss running 6010 5p+

    Hi, might be silly question... but why is so popular using 6010 on root pass in the USA?I wanted to ask this for ages now, and I'm sure many people did already did...
    Here in the EU (ehh.. I'm in the UK now, but EU in general) we just use 7018on root pass as well.
    Nice video + machine!!
    I love Genie's and Nifty-lifts. When you welding from a bad boy like this, everyone knows you mean business. 😏😜

      I'm in Oregon and the coastal states and have never used 6010 in the field. It's always been 7018 or 232 wire. Those lifts are bad ace and I always request those lifts, but the boss either never gets it or it's broken.
      I do like that he's rocking the hardhat adapter. Very few guys use it, I think there great 👍 The vert in the video is pretty nice tho.

      A structural welder may use a specific welding process and electrode combination, such as 6010 for the root pass and 7018 for the cap, due to the unique properties and benefits offered by each electrode.
      6010 electrodes are known for their deep penetration and ability to perform well in challenging welding positions. They create a root pass with good penetration, which is essential for the integrity and strength of the weld joint, especially in structural applications. The 6010 electrode also produces a thinner, more convex bead profile, which is often preferred for the root pass in structural welding.
      On the other hand, 7018 electrodes are valued for their high deposition rates and the strong, clean welds they produce. They are commonly used for cover and fill passes in structural welding due to their excellent mechanical properties and relatively smooth bead appearance, which contributes to the overall strength and quality of the finished weld.
      By using 6010 for the root pass and 7018 for the cap, the welder is leveraging the specific characteristics of each electrode to create a strong, well-penetrated root pass with the 6010 electrode, followed by the deposition of additional filler material and the attainment of the desired weld profile and properties with the 7018 electrode for the cap pass.
      This method allows the welder to achieve a sound, structurally sound weld joint with the optimal characteristics for both the root and cap passes.

      Filler metal

    • @nathanielstone9464
      @nathanielstone9464 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      My guess... When a fitter plays ironworker, everything looks like a pipe. The beam he's welding in isn't coped correctly with a radius, it's done like you would in a fab shop if you were going to weld all around, even the horizontal welds of the web to the flange This might be done in a handful of spots like exposed metal architecture, but then why would you have giant glob welds? Those vertical root passes didn't get much screen time probably because they looked bad. Also then why have poor fit up from the start, with the top flange rolled out of alignment? The finished weld size relative to the material thickness is way too big and completely excessive. A good welder with that same setup could run a 3/32 vertical fillet on both sides, with no weave or blobby whipping, then groove the top flange and finish with a flat, nice looking weld in a single pass. Do the same for the bottom flange in overhead. If dune for finished appearance, the inside welds can be performed first, then back gouge and fill the top flat and bottom overhead grooves.
      I don't know what this was trying to simulate. If you want to show structural welds, use real world fit up with a gap and backer bar, not 6010.
      I'm with you, every spec I have seen calls for exclusively E70xx.

    HAHAHAHA...He says make sure you follow the code as his alignment for that thickness is not code and his huge gaps for that thickness is not either, in addition didn't clean that rust off at 2" away from the weld. Plus as that is not a big project I can almost guarantee he did not open a new rod container and or the rod was not in a oven first so it was almost certainly over the allowable atmosphere exposer time.
