  • WipEout - ATI 3D Rage version by Psygnosis, 1996.
I've already covered the regular version of WipEout ( • WipEout (1995) - PC Fu... ), so here's the 3D accelerated version, which was exclusive to the ATI 3D Rage range of graphics cards.
This is running using the GLRage wrapper available here: github.com/ata... which, if run fullscreen, boosts the resolution to your desktop resolution. This looks sharper, but exacerbates the breakup of polygons in the distance, making everything judder and break up.
So here I captured it at the maximum resolution the game actually ran at on real hardware, 640x480, which meant I had to play the game in a little window!
Other than the graphics, which feature many more colours than the 256 colour DOS version, true transparencies, plus a resolution bump from 320x200 to 640x480, this game is fairly similar to the regular version.
There is a bug with the CD playback here though, with only the track chosen in the pause menu starting (random music doesn't work, it just defaults to whichever track was last chosen).
On this video I do a single lap of all the basic tracks (the bonus Firestar track isn't shown here).
Music on the PC version lacks the big name tracks from the likes of Chemical Brothers, but what's present suits the game well, being from CoLD SToRAGE, whose tracks you can find here: coldstorage.ba...
There is no engine noise however, unlike the PlayStation version (which also features fancy sound processing effects like echo).
This was how the DOS version might have looked, had 3D acceleration been more widespread when it released. But WipEout wasn't as successful as it's sequel, which we'll get to in due course!

I remembered playing this and thinking why can't it go any faster . It was always so slow and boring

@@gerryk101 these are only the starter ships, so it does get faster. But the sequel is so much better, as walls don't bring you to a clanging halt so much
