A lot to say about this one!
League of Legends is a free game, with the majority of their income driven by customisations called Skins.
There's a cast of well over 130 characters in the game each with 2-10 additional skins. Quite often they will release a series of skins for multiple characters that share a theme, so in this case we have Kaisa, Akali, Evelynn and Ahri, all with multiple purchasable "KD/A" Skins, with new animations, sounds and so on.
So the purpose of the KDA music video is firstly to advertise and sell these skins.
However, it goes a bit deeper than that. Riot has a huge amount of immensely talented people working on expanding the League of Legends universe into all sorts of mediums. We have high quality comics, stories, lore, several virtual music groups, some incredible cinematics and of course the Netflix animated series Arcane. All of these are given huge budgets for production, and there's a real passion and level of quality with all of them.
There is a fantastic live performance of Popstars performed at the 2018 World Championship Finals opening ceremony, well worth watching. All 4 of the artists appeared. Their characters are as below.
    Akali - (Ninja/Rapper) - Soyeon from (G)I-DLE
Ahri - (9 tailed fox in the laundromat) - Miyeon from (G)I-DLE
Evelynn - (Demonic looking one with the tail and the cars) - Madison Beer
Kai'sa - (Dancer with the wings) - Jaira Burns
Sorry for the wall of text, love your reactions man!

    - "I'll Show You" by *K/DA* with *Twice*

Fun fact: Riot Games decided Soyeon would be the voice of Akali before she even debuted (before I-DLE in 2018 and her soloist debut in 2017) after watching her performances in Unpretty Rapstar 3 in 2016 - where her being the youngest didn't matter as she was the feared and respected "scary unnie (older sister)". Let me re-emphasize this, because its absolutely wild; Riot Games had their talent scouts look through however many Kpop rappers, and ended up choosing JEON SOYEON - an 17 year old girl that hadn't even debuted yet - as the best rapper for their virtual Kpop group 🔥🔥

K/DA is a fictional K-Pop girl group primarily made up of Soyeon and Miyeon from (G)I-DLE along with Madison Beer and Jaira Burns. It was formed to record Pop/Stars as a promotional song for the 2018 League of Legends World Championships held in Korea that year, where they also performed the song live (which you should check out). They also released in-game K/DA skins for purchase since these are all playable characters in the game.
Pop/Stars was so popular they released an EP in 2020 that included other artists as part of K/DA on some songs. The title track More had the core group along with Lexi Lui as a guest feature. By the way, Soyeon is in another LoL group named True Damage, which you should also check out.

The animation crew behind this were Fortiche, the same ones who just produced the award winning Arcane series in the same universe. This was actually a 'side' project between animating the pilot of Arcane and getting the funding and approval to move forward with the rest of the season. They are, imho, possibly the best animators on the planet at the moment, and it shows.

Part of what makes the music so good for league of legends is that Riot Games (the company behind the game) has a dedicated music department that is dedicated to creating the music for their tournament themes, champion teasers and cinematics, and in game events amongst many other things. Short K/DA lore:
Ahri (fox lady), before starting K/DA was a solo preformer but was consistently pressured into preforming a set style which would sell under a label she was working for. After years of working for unnamed label, she leaves to start her own band by reconnecting with Evelyn (sunglasses, car), who also was a solo preformer with two hit singles.
It took them some time and work but eventually they found and recruited Kai'sa (braids) and Akali (mask). Together they produced their first single, "Pop/Stars" in 2018. The song was a global sucess, and the group quickly rose in stardom.
However, unable to predict the sudden spike in fame, the group took time off to cool off. None of them knew what would be next for them.
Kai'sa went to improve her dancing, Evelyn returned to her 'dating habits' (all her past lovers are still missing... this also ties in to her in game persona) and Akali dove back into the rap scene, eventually meeting up with Ekko, Quiana, Senna & Yasuo (also League of Legends characters). The five of them would form a group called True Damage, and release their own single 'Giants' (also a Riot Song).
Ahri, meanwhile, fell into turmoil. She had managed to reach the songs she wanted but she was thrust back into the same predicament, expected to preform again to an expectation. It was only through finding Seraphine online, that she found that creative spark again.
So Ahri assembled the group, plus Seraphine, to produce "More" two years later (2020). Afterwards, the four original girls would create the rest of the EP, with Yasuo being the producer.
Ahri's song, "I'll Show You", is about the fears we all face when about to make a choice. The voices and expectations that can pull you down even when you are at the final leap.
Akali's song, "Baddest", is a song about her views on the group and her life. She values independant creativity and isn't afraid to call the shots as she sees them.
Evelyn's song, "Villain", has more ties to her game persona. If the lyrics are interpreted from K/DA lore, it is more the fact she is willing to accept the labels. If people will call her a diva or a monster or even a villain, she doesnt care, she wears it with pride. At the end of the day, she knows who she is, but do you?
Finally Kai'sa's song, "Drum Go Dum", is more an homage to her K/DA lore. She lived in ten different countries, learned to speak four lanagugse and won a national dance competition before joining K/DA. To her, dance is a language that transcends words.

League of Legends is a game from Riot Games founded September 2006, United States. There is a joke that Riot Games are better at making music videos than games :)

League of Legends has made some fascinating marketing decisions. The music videos are largely to advertise new skin lines/psych up fans at esport events. That said, they keep making fucking bangers lmao and they have a bunch of different styles of music since its not one band. There's a whole league of legends metal band with like 4-5 albums out now and its actually pretty good.

K/DA was what started everything for me (and I've never played LOL).
K/DA --> (G)I-DLE --> via SEULGI's 'Wow Thing' --> Chung Ha and then Dreamcatcher. What followed was Rolling Quartz, Everglow, aespa, Purple Kiss, Loona (at least I really like 'PTT') and many more.

Video games legitimately have phenomenal music. A lot of it is non-vocal though. See Doom for some super good metal-esque stuff (The Only Thing They Fear is You), Bungie’s composers who worked on the OSTs for Halo and Destiny have made some great orchestral tracks (One Final Effort from Halo 3, Journey from Destiny 2), Minecraft has super nice electronic music (like Sweden and Aria Math). Don’t know how many of those you’ve heard of or if you listen to much non-vocal music though.

K/DA was used as a vehicle to sell champion skins in the video game League of Legends during the 2018 World Cup Competition for League. Characters in the game are called "champions." K/DA (just spell out the letters, its not "kay-dah") is a fictional kpop girl group.
As an example, Ahri, the fox-girl, originally had another skin call "Pop Star Ahri"; her original white/red outfit and the pop star outfit can be seen in the basket in the laundromat scene.
This is not the first time Riot has forayed into music - Pentakill was a metal band that already has several albums, and is ostensibly in the same musical alternate universe, featuring champions from the game as the band members.
Word to the wise: DON'T PLAY LEAGUE. It's more toxic than most online game communities, and the barrier to entry is pretty high and the new player experience is terrible without friends to help sherpa you.
The video was produced by Studio Fortiche, a French animation studio that has worked with Riot since the video made to introduce the new champion Jinx back in 2013. Studio Fortiche ALSO animated Riot's 2021 Netflix runaway hit Arcane, an alternate stand-alone universe from League.

K/DA stands for kill, death, assist.
The characters have their own game I think, and are voiced by different artists on other tracks but they have two other tracks with (G)I-DLE "MORE" & "The Baddest"
The song "I'll Show You" also features TWICE.
From (G)I-DLE it's only the rapper Soyeon and the vocalist Miyeon. Soyeon was Akali, the girl on the train with ponytail and hat. Miyeon was Ahri (who's the leader of K/DA) the fox with the tail and ears. The one in the car was Evelynn (Madison Beer) and the one with the cannons over her shoulder is Kai'sa (Jaira Burns).
They have 6 songs in total and all of them are awesome and definitely worth checking out.

To answer the question why they managed to capture the emotion and movement so well... They did do motion capture for each of the characters, yes they fly Soyeon and Miyeon from korea to their HQ in LA just to do the motion capture for the animation.

    • @kervala
      @kervala 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

In fact, the motion capture was done by RIOT for the CGI during the live event, not for the music video. Fortiche doesn't use motion capture for their main characters only for the crowd, you can learn that by watching the making of Arcane.

So I have you to a couple of music videos and I never though that you mite like some of the things that Riot (who created LOL) have done. So they have done music videos for the different seasons and events of the game and some that are just music videos . K/DA was both just a music video and for an event, there is also a heavy metal group called Pentakill and last but not less there is Arcane the Riot/Netflix show and all that music. The show's opening theme is by Image Dragon (plus there is a music video for that as well). I will enjoy watching your reactions to them. So STAY SAFE and have a great day.

This was for a new season so these were new skins for favorite characters.
(_)I-DLE Main Rapper Soyeon voiced the part of Akali (she's the one with the spray cans in the subway). Soyeon is a real driving force no matter what she is up to.
(_)I-DLE Main Vocalist Miyeon voiced Ahri, the multi-tailed Fox girl (she has a Charm ability in-game that stuns opponents).
Madison Beer voiced Evelynn (she is the one with the round shades and the car; she's a telekinetic knife-fighter in-game).
Jaira Burns voiced Kai' Sa (she can move incredibly quickly, teleport and can fire missiles from her hands in-game).
There is a Live Stage performance version of this song for the League of Legends World Championship Opening Ceremony in 2018 that is UN-MISSABLE! You HAVE to see it! MIND-BLOWING and I do not say that lightly! :)

Something most don't notice is the level of video production involved here. The camera is always framed with the subject dead center of the shot... and the camera, in every single shot, is pulling back. The whole song is about how they are untouchable so the camera is continually pulling away from them. The level of production quality in this exceeds most big name artists. It's impressive really.

You want an explanation? Well, KD/A is a "super group" literally molded and crafted for LoL. Also KD/A means Kills, Deaths, Assists. Oh and also Akali and Ahri in KD/A is Soyeon and Miyeon from (G)I-DLE. and yes LoL is making their own bands. They have another band that you might like as you are also a metalhead like me. Their name is Pentakill, which in game terms means a squad wipe or a 5 consecutive kills (meaning they wiped the whole enemy team) because Lol is a 5v5 battle royale.

Not sure if anyone explained it, so I will. K/DA is a gaming term that stands for "Kill/Death Average" . Primarily used in PVP games it is a number that is the average of how many enemies you kill to how many times you die. Also, Riot (the company behind League of Legends) has a HUGE catalog of animation vids containing different in game characters. A couple of hours worth if I remember right. Generally each vid is only a couple minutes long, but there are a lot of them.

"...watch a whole tv show like this" you say? Well look no further than Arcane! Riot has been dipping into a whole bunch of different things, branching out and seeing what they can get into. Their first show is on Netflix and it is so well crafted! The characters, the animation, the story! It's all incredible and I highly recommend looking into doing full reactions of the episodes. I know it would be a lot longer than your usual videos for music, but I would 100% sit down and watch you watch every episode.
Also, this is not the only fictional music group they've created. They also made True Damage and Pentakill. Pentakill will probably be up your alley since you said you grew up on metal, and it is the first of the fictional bands they created.
There's a lot to look at with all the KDA songs, all the Pentakill songs and all the one-off music videos they've made for different seasons and other events in the game, but don't feel pressured by it. We'll be here for every video you do check out, I know you've got a long list.

League has actually several different bands: K/DA (=kill/death assist//K-pop), true damage(rap) and Pentakill (metal// Pentakill just released lat year their 3rd album! We even have an intractive VR music concert)
League went big with music (they build up a whole music department which is unheard of in this industry) so every champion got his on music theme (currently 158 champions) and eventually they dived into animated music videos like this until they now produced the absolute masterpiece of animated series called Arcane which won a bunch(!) of Awards. You really should check that out :) Music wise it is a treat as well because the previous head of the music department (the one who brought music at league to life) is the co-writer of Arcane. :)
The official music video to the series called ENEMY by Imagine Dragons
    th-cam.com/video/F5tSoaJ93ac/w-d-xo.html
In the 2nd part of the "Bridging the Rift" series (behind the scenes/Makimg of Arcane) they've revealed that they put Arcane on hold becasue they rewrote the story. So in order not to loose the animators in that period of time they occupied them with the popstars video and the rise video. But they never expected the "filler" project to become such a hit like K/DA became. They even received platin this week for popstars.
You should watch the life performances at worlds - 2018 is K/DA performance and 2019 is the ever best show with true damage.
You can watch the seasonal trailers because league has a habit to combine music with animation cinematics :)

You've put out reaction to "more" so I didn't link that here.
In general they explore this content even more (because the fans really love it and the skins sell really well ;) ) and make it richer with twitter accounts of the groups sharing art and "lore" and they even made an interview like this- Riot really knows how to advertise their content :) :
    th-cam.com/video/Hm9uxiQPFBs/w-d-xo.html

    th-cam.com/video/eEFVxI9lqjU/w-d-xo.html
(the fandom is begging for an actual anime since the star guardian parallel univers has the richest lore at the moment - Many of the older players love it because thy feel nostalgia of the 90's- this is sailor moon/magical girl anime inspired)

So, have fun and enjoy the League content :)
PS: As far as I know League(Riot) is the only game(company) putting so much effort into the variety of the music content and extra content. Of couse this is always to promote an event or a skinline but it is just amazing how much work they put into this - they nail it every time (the music itself might be a different tase of yours but the production is just awesome and deserves praise)

This is Riot/League’s kpop group! It was originally to promote skins for the champions, but it’s now way more than that. They’re a full fledged kpop group now. They even have their own EP and Lightstick! Their fandom name is BLADES
    Ahri - Miyeon of G-idle
    Akali - Soyeon of G-idle
    Kai’sa - Jaira Burns
    Evelynn - Madison Beer
Kai’sa and Evelynn have been voiced by other artists as well in other songs.

Also watch Arcane, and fall down league of legends music rabbit hole and cinematics and comics and short story novels and and and the list goes on... champion themes, voice lines for champions, Riot no longer is a video game company... it should be called Riot Entertainment co.

K/DA was a project group for the release of their new skins for the game.
Each of the singers are a character in the game.
    In order of appearance.
    Akali: Soyeon (G)I-DLE
    Evelynn: Madison Beer
    Ahri: Miyeon (G)I-DLE
    Kai'sa: Jaira Burns
LOL has plenty of MVs out there. K/DA in particular. In 2020 LOL released a K/DA EP which featured "More" as their title track and had a "solo" song by each member.
"The Baddest" focused primarily on Akali(Soyeon) but was dubbed a group song. Miyeon along with Bea Miller and Wolftyla are on this track which was co-composed with Bekuh BOOM. The video is an animated lyric video.
"Villain" is Evelynn's song. Madison Beer and Kim Petras comprise the vocals for this song. The MV is a serious flex of the animation studio.
"Drum Go Dum" is Kai'sa's song with Wolftyla and Bekuh BOOM and featuring Aluna on vocals. The MV is a dance performance video with Bailey Sok as the dancer, she was 16 at the time.
"I'll Show You" is Ahri's song. This features Jihyo, Nayeon, Sana and Cheayoung of Twice performing the vocals along with Bekuh BOOM ans Annika Wells.
"More" is the title track of the EP. It brings the original group back together (Soyeon, Miyeon, Madison and Jaira) and introduce a new character Saraphine (Lexie Liu a Chinese singer).
Also there is True Damage. This was introduced as a group started by Akali/Soyeon featuring Becky G/Qiyana(J-Hope's "Chicken Noodle Soup") Keke Palmer/Senna and Thutmose and Duckwrth/Echo.
    Their song is "Giants".
Pentakill is another group focusing on heavy metal music.
A lot of people say Riot games is a music studio masquerading as a gaming company. Given all the songs they have put out, I might be inclined to believe them😁.
    cheers
    EDIT: K D A(Kill/Death/Assist)
Also Arcane on Netflix follows some of the characters from the game in an animated series. "Enemy" by Imagine Dragons ft. JID, introduced us to the characters in the show.
