13:06 I can actually tell you EXACTLY what these statues are: They're all enemies and bosses from the arcade game "Slashout", which Super Monkey Ball's stage director Daisuke Sato was chief designer of. Slashout was a fantasy-themed spinoff of Sega's 3D beat-'em-up series, Spikeout, produced by Super Monkey Ball series director Toshihiro Nagoshi. I think it's really cool that such an obscure title gets to be associated with a well-known one like Super Monkey Ball.

I would also like to add that there's further Slashout references in Super Monkey Ball 2, such as the Mansion from the game's second stage being visible in the Amusement Park, and Ciliegio Cathedral from the first stage being visible in the background of Clock Tower.

16:35 I always got the sense that the giant spinning thing was supposed to be like a monkey Colosseum. Just like how a quarter of the real colosseum has collapsed, a quarter of that building is broken.

Was very surprised to see that the space diners didn't even make it to top 5. It always stood out to me as the most iconic background in the series.

I haven't been recommended your vids in a while. I had the nagging feeling that something was missing in my idealist life. Then I realized it was this channel, and manually found you again. Incredible vid. The Storm name thing blew my mind.
Super Monkey Ball 2 had some VERY weird implied realities in its stages. Especially the ones you can explore by flying around in the dogfight multiplayer mode!

i really like the vibe you're going for with this channel. reminds me of all the times i'd try to get out of bounds and find keys for flat textures of doors, or ways to reach windows or rooms just out of reach. when it was fueled just out of pure curiosity and wonder, before i knew how game dev actually worked. when it felt believable, and i could just take in and enjoy every aspect of a game thoroughly and through an unjaded lense. it's comfortable, feels like listening to my own passing thoughts. i mean that in a good way lol.

I’ll give you a free video idea. Mortal Kombat Konquest. Specifically the Konquest game mode. It has a lot of really surreal, ethereal areas in the game; a perfect game to go exploring around in to find strange quiet places

If you're planning on doing another "surviving in a video game world" video like the Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time ones, I'd love to see you break down Super Mario Sunshine that way. Sure, there's an established civilization, but you'd still need money to buy things like food. Maybe check out each world in the game separately to see which are easier or harder to survive in (I imagine you'd be eating a lot of bloopers in Rico Harbor).

What freaks me out about Underwater is how if you use moon jump codes to get above the water's surface, there's just...nothing up there. No sky, no sun, no land in the distance, no water surface from above, just void. In this world, beneath the surface of the water is all there is. Nothing exists above the water's surface...

You really capture that point in my childhood where I built lore purely from context.
There are certain game franchises where I kind of wish they didn't establish their lore over time and just let us piece together what we can from the environment.

you made me think of using super monkey ball movement and physics and controls to try to fight dark souls bosses. Like building up momentum to bash into the boss, but can you recover quickly enough to roll back away from the response attack? Sounds fun. Kinda like Sonic spindashing maybe?

I disagree, I think the monkey temple beanstalks are a DIRECT reference to the bean stalks you first see. I think it's supposed to symbolise your journey as you "climb" through the levels. Just because they're not in a square at the base doesn't mean they can't be in a square at the top, they are beanstalks after all they go all over the place. I think the final level is meant to reward you for wondering where those go.
