Or maybe because Dawn is not an All Star. And Dawn isn't as smart as you make her out to be. She needed 5 episodes to realise Scott is evil, and was easily manipulated by him in episode 3 to vote off B.

At least Sam had a lot of screentime and won a challenge for his team. Imagine knowing Scott's evil and not telling this to anyone till you get eliminated.
Wait a minute. I just realized something. Both Seierra and Zoey watched total drama and are pretty big fans, so it could have been super cool seeing the two talk about their favorite show, and whether or not they have differing opinions on certain things. The two could have even ,made a friendship and used their knowledge of the show and its characters to their advantage or something
Or it would’ve been awesome if Duncan and Zoey formed an alliance to take down Mal because of Duncan’s past connection with him. But instead we just got Alejandro being Alejandro and then only “helping” Zoey as he got flushed.

I don’t know Mal is not a fun antogonist. I just find him annoying when he does something “evil”. Total Drama gave us great villains like Heather and Al. But then we also got Sugar and Mal which are pretty much representation of how far Total Drama has fallen as a whole.
The “evil” things he did weren’t that “evil.” Alejandro was a way more formidable threat than Mal. I hate how dirty they did Alejandro in All Stars. I couldn’t stand the different voice acting.
Imagine if instead of moving Cameron to the villains team for no fucking reason, they move Mike/Mal and make everyone know about him being evil and you also eliminate him 2 episodes later.
Nah, the love triangle with Gwen and Cortney is WAAAAYYYY more important for Duncan's character. Just have Mal be rivals with Alejandro, that won't feel forced AT ALL.
Could’ve made Duncan have so much of a bigger role in the show but they gave him a bull shot ending because he was too good(best rankings of characters in three previous seasons) 4th 1st 5th
ikr every season she's on they did her dirty for instance in s1 she was eliminated unfairly because she was the last person to arrived where duncan and owen didn't even finished the race and in s2 they made her accidentally booted herself out which is sad because she really dominated that season and that is where I saw her character development, and in s3 they made her dumb again with the "who's tyler" gag and she got eliminated because the judges on the fashion episode was unfair to her making dj the winner, and in all stars they made her dumber asf and she got booted first which is so sad
Lindsay's elimination made absolutely no sense. Throughout seasons 1,2 and 3 Lindsay expresses her love for shopping and gets eliminated in all stars because she's "too dumb to push a shopping cart". Same thing with Lightning. sure he was also dumb, but he had determination, which is what got him in the finally in roti. All Stars just made lightning lazy, not dumb

Gwen and Courtney weren't Sadie and Katie.. and in AS, they made them just like Sadie and Katie.. which is weird, they were friends, but no bffs. Imo, Sierra shouldn't be in this season, Leshawna could be in her place. And Brick or Owen could replace Sam.

You also have to think about the logic of this. Courtney had competed THREE times before this. This was Mike and Zoey’s second time competing, same with Scott. How were the final three all people who competed one time before when Heather, Courtney, Gwen, Duncan, Lindsay, and you could even argue ALEJANDRO were there. Like huh-
Your placement in the game should never be based on how many seasons you competed in. I.E saying the Gen 1 characters should've placed higher due to having more seasons. Like none of that matters if you can get voted off at any time lol.

I never even thought about flipping the elimination order in this season. Linsey vs Lighting would be interesting. I also really wished they added Dawn in this season, she is a strong competitior who got cut way too early in revenge of the island. Here is to hoping she returns in the upcoming reboot. Great video.
Also, I would like to mention this season only had 13 episodes when World Tour had 26. I could watch this season twice and total drama action or island wouldn't even be over.
Honestly, in terms of the cast, I would swap out Sierra with Noah (kill two birds with one stone; 1) get rid of the stupid Cody-obsession and free Cameron to actually do his own thing instead of being swamped by a fangirl, and 2) allow Noah more time to shine and potentially set up a subtle rivalry between him and Mal using their wits), and switch Sam out for Dawn (both to give her time in the spotlight after getting screwed over in ROTI and to improve other characters' arcs, like maybe using her psychic stuff to help out Duncan not be freaked out over his image or team up with Noah against Mal after Noah uses his wits and Dawn uses her abilities to figure him out way before anyone else does).

As the writers stated, Cody did not return to _All-Stars_ because they felt his storyline with Sierra was already completed in _World Tour._ Sadly, they kind of gave that role to Cameron, making Sierra even crazier.

Tbh I feel bad and more sympathy to Heather since she is my favorite total drama character with the best character development arc of her 3 seasons (TDI TDA and TDWT).
I still don’t forgive them for trashing Courtney. She had a good redemption by being friends with Gwen and then they took it away! It’s not out of character for Courtney to make friends. She said in the confessional that she meant it that she’d be ok with Gwen winning the million but then she says winning was more important than Gwen with that list. There was no reason! Oh and the Mal thing was waaaayyy too drawn out. Mike and zoey aren’t all that interesting
this was a really well done video. this season has to take the cake for the most/worst character derailments in cartoon history. the fact that total drama is a character driven show just makes it a huge, huge problem to have. AS really could have been great, but alas, we can't always have nice things
What do the writers mean there’s not an audience for the show anymore? Total Drama is perfect for the streaming era of entertainment. It was a serialized series before that became the norm, so it’s perfect for binge watchers. Also, there are other forms of relativity tv competition shows besides Survivor and other stuff involving an island. If I was at the head of the creative team, I’d have the latest seasons parody a bachelor/bachelorette show. That way we can still have a wide caste of characters that live in the same place while also having interesting new challenges. Thanks to the CW and HBO, people are obsessed with teenagers exploring their sexuality and engaging in romance. It would also be less creepy since they’re cartoon characters.
The thing about Mal(and really just Mike’s system in general) that pisses me off is the absolutely terrible portrayal of DID and how altars work. If anyone doing the show did any research on DID, Mike could’ve had a lot more character depth(since DID happens as a result of trauma, which means we could’ve gotten a sad ass backstory for him and his altars). But honestly I’m not surprised considering this show’s writing has never really been the best.

Most people who have DID or study the disorder agree that the handling of DID here is actually pretty accurate, and the personalities can fuse into one which is what happened.
Idk why I’m just seeing this video but by god do I agree with EVERYTHING you said in this lol. This is also why I think Pahkitew Island isn’t the worst season even though it gets so much crap. Yeah they screwed up a good chunk of that cast, but here you have three seasons (excluding the ROTI players) worth of dynamics to work off of and they completely mess over anything worth while. Also why tf was the final two 2 ROTI players and not perhaps an OG vs a ROTI player 🤦♂️.
The whole villains vs hero idea was short-sighted. Nearly all the characters are assholes. Some are worse than other, so this gives you something to root for. But none of the character were ever meant to be "good guys"

Also the way they handled DID (or at the time multiple personality disorder) for Mike felt like "oh this looks like a fun gimmick for the season" and didn't look into how it worked when introducing Mal or for the reset button.
The button could just be a representation (either imagined in Mike's mind as a real sort of ritual he is perceiving or just for the audiences sake to understand in a easy way since this show is intended for kids) of the merging of all his personalities, which is a real thing that can happen with DID. It's actually a choice people with DID can make when they are ready to merge into a single personality when all Alters are in agreement. So no, it's not inaccurate actually.
That episode have the 2nd cursed unfair 5th place elimination and in every TD season and TRR, 5th place is cursed. However, 5th place eliminations in TDI, TDAS, TDPI, and TRR are considered unfair. TDA, TDWT and TDROTI have 5th place eliminations fair.

I remember really looking forward to All-stars because Duncan was in it and I wanted to see them further develop his relationship with Gwen, I absolutely hate the way the writers ended their relationship, Duncan entered TDI as a cool punk and left TDAS as a loser
It really sucks how they just made Gwen and Duncan just simps for Courtney . People say “Duncan still wanted Courtney all along ” but what actually happened was , Gwen was IGNORING him and literally pushing him away for apparently no reason . Then on top of that Courtney was ignoring him so he just felt IGNORED and wanted attention from SOMEBODY. Gwen then had the AUDACITY to get jealous when he was fanning for Courtney, when 1) she’s doing the same thing and 2) she was acting like she didn’t even LIKE Duncan , so really what did she expect? The whole “I miss Courtney” thing was soo cringy for Gwen too. When they were And in world tour she never tried to make things up. She just kept defending herself. And the whole “Courtney NEVER missed Duncan but really missed Gwen” thing. What?? The person she was with for 3 years, she missed less than the person she was “friend ish” for a week with??? She was always closer to Duncan than Courtney. They really jeopardized Duncan and Gwen’s relationship and friendship for the Courtney show. LeGwen will always trump Gwourtney.
The way I see it, they could have made it better by either 1) Replacing characters, like Sam and Sierra, with characters, like Owen, Lashawna, etc. 2) Making the season longer with all competitors. I can see them somehow reverting Dakota and Ezekiel to normal, while Zeke still has his heightened senses and Dakota has what's left of her super strength from when she was a mutant. I think it sounds like something Total Drama would do. Not only that, they should have made more interactions between Mal and Duncan and Alejandro. That would have made it better.
For once, thank god cancel culture exists because they could never make a character like Mike in 2021. Creating a comedic character based around a mental illness, and then having said character instantly cure himself with the single push of a button… yikes.

Personally, I would’ve had Courtney and Lindsay as the finalists. Someone who would be heavily favored to win it all due to her skills and experience vs someone with the potential to pull off a massive upset due to her fellow contestants underestimating her all season. And both of them are characters that plenty of fans have an attachment to and would *want* to see win.
I remember there being a theory that this season was supposed to be intentionally bad because of how poorly survivor all stars was received and I've just decided to accept that as fact

This may just be me, but Zoey and Mike's relationship is so stupid. It didn't develop at all and they just acted like a couple the whole time. It should have started with attraction, pining and development, then have them get together. Zoey was so annoying bc she relied too much on Mike to save her. Since their first episode instead of them getting to know each other they just snap into place.

I personally agree but I know a lot of people dislike him in later seasons. Which I understand where they're coming from of course. I just don't mind it. Makes stuff more interesting when theres a chaotic host. But again I understand why people dislike it.

The Mal thing pisses me off so much! I study psychology so my main problem how the writers poorly represented DID. Dissociative identity disorder or DID is a disorder where someone can have multiple personalities and not know about them. Those personalities come around as a coping mechanism for bad memories due to trauma. Those personalities can’t just be erased, they didn’t dive into how he has DID, and the way they portrayed how the personalities show up drives me absolutely insane!!!!
Thank you so much for explaining it. 😮I wanted to get a book from the library to learn more about the disorder; to learn what was the triggers and how or did it linked with emotions. On a general aspect, I figured that a person like this needs to be under protection because I seen where it can be very mild shifting to dangerous and now I know that it is not possible to have a hidden personality that was locked away. Speaking of protection, it just dawned on me( no pun intended) , where was Mike's parents..? I looked in the tdroti audition tapes and he doesn't mention them which is even more strange. 🤨 In all it seems like the idea of this disorder was toyed around for comedy when its actually no laughing matter😕
But they did it in a cartoony portrayal of it, it’s not meant to be taken seriously. They didn’t want this to be a something you use as media reference when talking about this disorder, in my eyes unless it was “real people would not act like this, watch out for posers.”

Mike is one of my favorite Total drama characters. It's why I was so disappointed with Mal. They could have made it where mike keeps switching back and forth from Mike to Mal. Make him have to fight mal for control of his body. Have those from his season concerned about him while the rest of the cast just thinks he's going crazy. Duncan knowing Mal from juvie can stay just give them more interactions with each other
I think the most insane inconsistency was Courtney in All Stars saying "This is the farthest I've ever made it on Total Drama." when she made it to final five. Girl tied for 3rd with Owen in Action. (Technically she jumped in late for Action, but no way Courtney would sell herself short on that.) You could at least argue that Courtney maybe kissed Alejandro off-screen, or that it's difficult for hired writers to watch everything enough to know everything about a huge cast in vivid detail, especially when no one down the production line points it out. But the rankings aren't hard to look at on the wiki. That was crazy.
The first part, I can relate to you. I didn't know about the show because I was little, but when Revenge of the Island premiered, that's when I watched it. I thought it was the first season, so that's why I didn't know the 1st generation cast. Through the years, I learned more about the show, and that's where I am.
When Courtney and Gwen started bonding over their hair, I was thinking "maybe they should just kiss. Probably be more passionate than either of them with Duncan".
Honestly, Chris' character derailment is something that's never bothered me. I kinda like how as TD gets more successful, Chris starts getting more careless and sadistic, basically turning the show into his own SAW game. Also, it's hilarious. Here's the ideal cast for my allstars rewrite. I'd have the teams feel like they were spinned around with a wheel of names. But here's who I'd pick for only 18 players. 9 from gen 1. 9 from gen 2 Gen 1 characters 1. Harold 2. Courtney 3. Gwen 4. Eva 5. Owen 6. Beth 7. Lindsay 8. DJ 9. Noah Gen 2 1. Mike 2. Cam 3. Joe 4. Courtney could have accepted but its because she was planning to use scott for her plans. And eventually they start getting attached. And just by body language and facial expressions. You can see they're starting to fall in love. Best way to put it. Its two evil people who tried using one another for a plan. But kinda fall in love.

“Don’t fall in, unless you plan on going to the prom with Ezekiel.” It’s a well-written line for Chris, yet it disturbs me for a handful of reasons I’m not sure I can place my finger on. Not just the fact that he’d endanger the players that way, but he almost prides himself on how awfully he’s treated that kid, and is aware that he’s doing this to them at such a young point in their lives, and he’s ready to do it to even more. All-Stars leaves such a horrible taste in my mouth, and I really don’t know why that line lives rent-free in my head, especially considering Ezekiel was a character I didn’t even care for before World Tour.
The part that messed up the entire season was the length, there was close to no reward challenges which had rapidly pacing storylines, they literally halved the season, so they had to double the speed of EVERYONES arc. It fucking sucks. Also they eliminated lightning too quickly, he def wouldve lasted longer if the season was longer.
The Heroes vs Villains theming was probably done as a nod to the Survivor season of the same name which (unlike this one) was one of the best seasons of the show, but then again maybe TDAS being bad was a reference to the garbage that was Survivor All Stars.

Hey! This was a really well structured and informed video. You definitely make a lot of excellent points and I learnt a lot more about the production! Don’t mind me as I ramble on about some of the things I thought about it, and my general opinions on some things. TLDR: yes, all stars bad. (update a year later: some of my opinions here have changed but the TLDR still holds true lol) -Jo is the most wasted character. The power struggle and the fight for leadership plot in the earlier episodes was really good, and I wish they built up a specific rivalry between her, and say Alejandro or Heather. She should’ve made it further in the competition. -The point about the teams being not good is very valid. Though the concept of one of the Heroes ending up as the main antagonist is good, the teams end up being very unbalanced. For my above point, you don’t need all of the ‘antagonists’ on a team to do that. In any case, it’s smoother if there’s a good amount on each team. -I’d say that Evil Dread is the best episode in All Stars. To me, the main two issues with All Stars is A) the character derailment and B) Mal. In Evil Dread, the character derailment isn’t too bad, (at least compared to the other episodes before and after it) and the character interactions are pretty good. As you mentioned, the earlier episodes have the advantages of having better challenges and more intergenerational interactions. Although it is evident to me that there is one team that stands out as more entertaining in general (cough cough Vultures.) And Mal? Well this episode is kind of like the I See London of All Stars, in the sense that it’s a really good episode, but introduces a plot line that I really dislike. While I See London is probably the more entertaining episode, at least Evil Dread has the merit of not having a BS elimination. -Gwen’s ‘three seasons of kindness’ thing. The best way I can describe it is her suddenly gaining Bridgette-esque morals, cause this is a far cry from season 1 Gwen. Gwen is a very morally grey character who could be argued to go on either team, and should be self aware enough to recognise that from everyone else’s reaction to the love triangle drama in TDWT, she’d likely end up on the Villains team. Did Gwen get amnesia sometime during the one year break? -A lot of people say that they wanted Dawn to be on All Stars, but I kind of disagree. The way that Mal works as a villain and how Dawn is as a character means that she’d uncover his act quickly, which would mean that in order to maintain his identity, she’d either have to be kicked out early again or write some contrived reason for her to sideline the concerns of safety for the other competitors in order to keep it a secret. Or just have everyone ignore/dismiss her, which we already have with Duncan. -Yes! An acknowledgement of how they completely drop the Duncan recognising Mal thing! I thought it was going to lead to a confrontation with Mal recognising Duncan back, and then directly contributing to his elimination or something? But nope. Nothing. Since Zoey doesn’t even believe him when he tells her that he’s actually Mal, what was the point? (Also I feel like Gwen dismissing him when he brings it up to her is an example of the writers dumbing down characters to make Mal seem more intimidating and hidden. I can kind of understand why Courtney would dismiss him, and I get that Gwen is fresh off of a break up with him, but she should recognise that he’s not really the kind to lie about others. The specific reason they give in the episode as to her not believing him (Mike being too nice to possibly be evil) is somehow even stupider. Girl, you love horror movies. You should know that the murderer is always the person you least expect! At the least she should’ve taken it into consideration.) -Speaking of Duncan and his elimination, him going to prison was while yes, shocking, also very very bullshit. How come he didn’t receive such a repercussion last season, when he blew up the giant Chris statue? Why didn’t Sierra receive such a repercussion when she blew up the plane in World Tour? It just feels like a pointless addition of insult to injury. They could’ve just had Chris kick him off like the aforementioned Sierra. The only reason I could fathom them doing this is for the exclusive clip? -Heather’s elimination reminds me of the Lindsay cussing moment in That’s Off The Chain, in the sense that yes, it’s a cool moment, I really like the concept of Alejandro directly eliminating Heather, (or vice versa), but everything leading up to it is very sloppy and contrived. (Also sidenote: did they name the episode specifically after that moment?) -I never really was that into Scottney? It kind of just felt like the writers feeling the need to put two characters from different generations in a relationship, and spun a bottle at random to choose who. -I’m surprised you didn’t really go too much into Sundae Cruddy Sundae, but then again the internet’s already torn it a new one, so I can understand why. Honestly the most baffling part of it to me is that it was written by the same guy who wrote You Regatta Be Kidding Me, AKA the episode where the two literally make the promise to take eachother to the final two. Courtney's derailment upset me the most tbh. She went from a character in island to generally being hardworking, with a bit of a temper, and a tendency to annoying to people around her, to a fucking whiny brat in action. I had a bit of hope for her during the first bit of world tour but then the Triangle happened and I was so over her. Seeing her in All Stars did not surprise me just filled me with resigned disappointment.
They didn't even try to do anything different with her after Island. I do wonder if they're afraid to even reapproach the issue now given all the furor they provoked over the character.
Like, what was the meaning behind why they wrote it? My guess is either a) they didn't think this through or b) some writers wanted to have a romantic relationship develop between Gwen and Courtney but the higher ups at Cartoon Network shut it down, and this scene just got left in by accident, or something like that? If they wanted just a simple moment of friendship, there's a very easy, less time consuming way for this scene to go. Starting from when Courtney says "thanks, i almost got my hair wet", have Gwen say "No problem, Courtney", and then maybe Scott attempts to flirt with courtney but falls into the water, causing Courtney's hair to actually get wet, as the girls just look at Scott perplexed before laughing it off. There, I came up with that scene idea in 5 minutes and it's so much less forced.
The two biggest issues this season was the 13 episode format and the lazy storytelling. An All Star season is supposed to be everything we love about the previous seasons all in one but having such few episodes limits the amount of time we get to spend with these characters. I get what they were trying to do with 7 ROTI characters and 7 original characters but when there is only 13 ROTI characters and 24 classic players it forces the writers to cut important characters. Also I understand why they put Sierra on given she was one of the new contestants brought back in WT but her character does not work without Cody. The writing is definitely the worst part about the season. What made seasons like Action and Island great is the fact every character got a time to shine. Just because Owen, Gwen, Beth and Duncan were finalist never stopped other characters like Heather, Leshawna, Courtney, Lindsay, Geoff, Izzy, Trent, Dj, Harold, Justin and Bridgette from being well written and developed characters. In All Stars they just crap on all the other characters and make the season the Mal and Zoey show. Its especially painful when the whole season we get this awful character in Mal and at the last second Mike comes back and wins in some countries? It felt completely undeserved given Mike did nothing to get himself to the finale and it seemed like Mal was used to give Mike an interesting enough story to make it to the finals and once they didn't need Mal anymore here comes the "reset button" to literally force his character out of existence
The characters they didn’t ruin are mostly comprised of the early eliminated ones. Lindsay wasn’t ruined, she was always pretty dumb and didn’t last long enough to be ruined Lightning wasn’t ruined for the exact same reason as Lindsay, they’re both dumb and both didn’t last long enough to be ruined. Jo wasn’t ruined, she was always annoying. Sam was ruined, like wtf was that pancake scene? Heather wasn’t ruined, she was pretty good in this season. Sierra was ruined because of the whole Cam-ody thing

Hun Lindsay had progress since total drama and got so much smarter n she literally almost won and had so much development throughout the seasons then they just made her brainless in all stars

I like it, the only problem I see are the reward challenges, maybe reducing them to 3 reward challenges and have other 3 people in like Dawn, Lindsay and Harold joining them later on. The rest it's pretty good
fun fact: Mal was already planned back in Revenge of the Island In the scene where we (somehow) see inside Mike's mind and he confronts all his personalities, Mal flashes onscreen for a second in the background, foreshadowing his role in All-Stars So they didnt write themselves into a corner and then make him up later, they already planned using him
How I'd rank them 7= Pakitew Island. I can't think of anything positive about this season or any of the characters. It just seemed a parody of itself. 6= All-Stars. Had maybe 2 or 3 good moments. Plus having characters I liked already made it slightly more watchable than Pakitew. 5= Revenge of the Island. Felt really random and all over. I'd say about half the episodes are rewatchable. 4= Ridiculous Race. First 10ish episodes are so slow. But as you get closer to the end it's more enjoyable. 3= Action. About half the episodes ar kinda unnecessary. I know that due to less players they couldn't eliminate every episode but it still dragged in places. Also a ton of cringe humor for some reason. 2= World Tour. I loved this season and I am still tempted to put it as number 1, but... 1= Island. I think it's at the top because it was way unpredictable. You start the show thinking maybe Courtney or Gwen would win as they seemed to be focused on the most, but once Courtney was booted you became aware that nobody was really safe. Since that episode it was very difficult to predict a winner as everyone was on the chopping block at that point. Plus it wasn't so over the top and deadly as the later seasons got.
I never liked Mike as a character even when he was first introduced also Zoey is super fucking annoying, she just FEELS like a Mary-Sue. I don’t understand how the both of them came back for All-Stars Also i agree they reeeaaallllyyyy messed up Gwen and Courtney’s character during all-stars

The idea of Mike having a (way less exaggerated than Mal) manipulative alternate personality as a villain is an amazing idea for literally any season other than an All Star season
Zoey legit won every challenge from Ep10 onward. She had the winning throw in challenge 2, knocked out Jo in 3, was given credit for winning 6 and got a free pass in 7
The only reason they didn't bring Dawn in for this season was cuz she'd be the only one smart enough to realize Mike's body got hijacked by a Hot Topic stereotype.

Both Seierra and Zoey watched total drama and are pretty big fans, so it could have been super cool seeing the two talk about their favorite show, and whether or not they have differing opinions on certain things. The two could have even ,made a friendship and used their knowledge of the show and its characters to their advantage or something

I don’t know Mal is not a fun antogonist. I just find him annoying when he does something “evil”. Total Drama gave us great villains like Heather and Al. But then we also got Sugar and Mal which are pretty much representation of how far Total Drama has fallen as a whole.
The “evil” things he did weren’t that “evil.” Alejandro was a way more formidable threat than Mal. I hate how dirty they did Alejandro in All Stars. I couldn’t stand the different voice acting.
Imagine if instead of moving Cameron to the villains team for no fucking reason, they move Mike/Mal and make everyone know about him being evil and you also eliminate him 2 episodes later.
If Duncan knew about Mal from his whistle during his time in juvie, the writers could have expanded that into a potential feud

ikr every season she's on they did her dirty for instance in s1 she was eliminated unfairly because she was the last person to arrived where duncan and owen didn't even finished the race and in s2 they made her accidentally booted herself out which is sad because she really dominated that season and that is where I saw her character development, and in s3 they made her dumb again with the "who's tyler" gag and she got eliminated because the judges on the fashion episode was unfair to her making dj the winner, and in all stars they made her dumber asf and she got booted first which is so sad

Lindsay's elimination made absolutely no sense. Throughout seasons 1,2 and 3 Lindsay expresses her love for shopping and gets eliminated in all stars because she's "too dumb to push a shopping cart". Same thing with Lightning. sure he was also dumb, but he had determination, which is what got him in the finally in roti. All Stars just made lightning lazy, not dumb

I never even thought about flipping the elimination order in this season. Linsey vs Lighting would be interesting. I also really wished they added Dawn in this season, she is a strong competitior who got cut way too early in revenge of the island. Here is to hoping she returns in the upcoming reboot. Great video.
Also, I would like to mention this season only had 13 episodes when World Tour had 26. I could watch this season twice and total drama action or island wouldn't even be over.
Honestly, in terms of the cast, I would swap out Sierra with Noah (kill two birds with one stone; 1) get rid of the stupid Cody-obsession and free Cameron to actually do his own thing instead of being swamped by a fangirl, and 2) allow Noah more time to shine and potentially set up a subtle rivalry between him and Mal using their wits), and switch Sam out for Dawn (both to give her time in the spotlight after getting screwed over in ROTI and to improve other characters' arcs, like maybe using her psychic stuff to help out Duncan not be freaked out over his image or team up with Noah against Mal after Noah uses his wits and Dawn uses her abilities to figure him out way before anyone else does).

What do the writers mean there’s not an audience for the show anymore? Total Drama is perfect for the streaming era of entertainment. It was a serialized series before that became the norm, so it’s perfect for binge watchers. Also, there are other forms of relativity tv competition shows besides Survivor and other stuff involving an island. If I was at the head of the creative team, I’d have the latest seasons parody a bachelor/bachelorette show. That way we can still have a wide caste of characters that live in the same place while also having interesting new challenges. Thanks to the CW and HBO, people are obsessed with teenagers exploring their sexuality and engaging in romance. It would also be less creepy since they’re cartoon characters.

The thing about Mal(and really just Mike’s system in general) that pisses me off is the absolutely terrible portrayal of DID and how altars work. If anyone doing the show did any research on DID, Mike could’ve had a lot more character depth(since DID happens as a result of trauma, which means we could’ve gotten a sad ass backstory for him and his altars). But honestly I’m not surprised considering this show’s writing has never really been the best.

The button could just be a representation (either imagined in Mike's mind as a real sort of ritual he is perceiving or just for the audiences sake to understand in a easy way since this show is intended for kids) of the merging of all his personalities, which is a real thing that can happen with DID. It's actually a choice people with DID can make when they are ready to merge into a single personality when all Alters are in agreement. So no, it's not inaccurate actually.

The way I see it, they could have made it better by either
1) Replacing characters, like Sam and Sierra, with characters, like Owen, Lashawna, etc.
2) Making the season longer with all competitors. I can see them somehow reverting Dakota and Ezekiel to normal, while Zeke still has his heightened senses and Dakota has what's left of her super strength from when she was a mutant. I think it sounds like something Total Drama would do.
Not only that, they should have made more interactions between Mal and Duncan and Alejandro. That would have made it better.
For once, thank god cancel culture exists because they could never make a character like Mike in 2021. Creating a comedic character based around a mental illness, and then having said character instantly cure himself with the single push of a button… yikes.

Personally, I would’ve had Courtney and Lindsay as the finalists. Someone who would be heavily favored to win it all due to her skills and experience vs someone with the potential to pull off a massive upset due to her fellow contestants underestimating her all season. And both of them are characters that plenty of fans have an attachment to and would *want* to see win.

This may just be me, but Zoey and Mike's relationship is so stupid. It didn't develop at all and they just acted like a couple the whole time. It should have started with attraction, pining and development, then have them get together. Zoey was so annoying bc she relied too much on Mike to save her. Since their first episode instead of them getting to know each other they just snap into place.

The Mal thing pisses me off so much! I study psychology so my main problem how the writers poorly represented DID. Dissociative identity disorder or DID is a disorder where someone can have multiple personalities and not know about them. Those personalities come around as a coping mechanism for bad memories due to trauma. Those personalities can’t just be erased, they didn’t dive into how he has DID, and the way they portrayed how the personalities show up drives me absolutely insane!!!!

On a general aspect, I figured that a person like this needs to be under protection because I seen where it can be very mild shifting to dangerous and now I know that it is not possible to have a hidden personality that was locked away. Speaking of protection, it just dawned on me( no pun intended) , where was Mike's parents..? I looked in the tdroti audition tapes and he doesn't mention them which is even more strange. 🤨 In all it seems like the idea of this disorder was toyed around for comedy when its actually no laughing matter😕

I think the most insane inconsistency was Courtney in All Stars saying "This is the farthest I've ever made it on Total Drama." when she made it to final five. Girl tied for 3rd with Owen in Action. (Technically she jumped in late for Action, but no way Courtney would sell herself short on that.) You could at least argue that Courtney maybe kissed Alejandro off-screen, or that it's difficult for hired writers to watch everything enough to know everything about a huge cast in vivid detail, especially when no one down the production line points it out. But the rankings aren't hard to look at on the wiki. That was crazy.
The first part, I can relate to you. I didn't know about the show because I was little, but when Revenge of the Island premiered, that's when I watched it. I thought it was the first season, so that's why I didn't know the 1st generation cast. Through the years, I learned more about the show, and that's where I am.

Man, the writers really don't want Scott to win. He gets deus ex machina'd by Fang and Zoey in ROTI and then just gets chosen to be eliminated by Zoey in All Stars. Poor guy.

It’s a well-written line for Chris, yet it disturbs me for a handful of reasons I’m not sure I can place my finger on. Not just the fact that he’d endanger the players that way, but he almost prides himself on how awfully he’s treated that kid, and is aware that he’s doing this to them at such a young point in their lives, and he’s ready to do it to even more. All-Stars leaves such a horrible taste in my mouth, and I really don’t know why that line lives rent-free in my head, especially considering Ezekiel was a character I didn’t even care for before World Tour.
The part that messed up the entire season was the length, there was close to no reward challenges which had rapidly pacing storylines, they literally halved the season, so they had to double the speed of EVERYONES arc. It fucking sucks. Also they eliminated lightning too quickly, he def wouldve lasted longer if the season was longer.
The Heroes vs Villains theming was probably done as a nod to the Survivor season of the same name which (unlike this one) was one of the best seasons of the show, but then again maybe TDAS being bad was a reference to the garbage that was Survivor All Stars.

Hey! This was a really well structured and informed video. You definitely make a lot of excellent points and I learnt a lot more about the production!
Don’t mind me as I ramble on about some of the things I thought about it, and my general opinions on some things.
TLDR: yes, all stars bad.
(update a year later: some of my opinions here have changed but the TLDR still holds true lol)
-Jo is the most wasted character. The power struggle and the fight for leadership plot in the earlier episodes was really good, and I wish they built up a specific rivalry between her, and say Alejandro or Heather. She should’ve made it further in the competition.
-The point about the teams being not good is very valid. Though the concept of one of the Heroes ending up as the main antagonist is good, the teams end up being very unbalanced. For my above point, you don’t need all of the ‘antagonists’ on a team to do that. In any case, it’s smoother if there’s a good amount on each team.
-I’d say that Evil Dread is the best episode in All Stars. To me, the main two issues with All Stars is A) the character derailment and B) Mal.
In Evil Dread, the character derailment isn’t too bad, (at least compared to the other episodes before and after it) and the character interactions are pretty good. As you mentioned, the earlier episodes have the advantages of having better challenges and more intergenerational interactions. Although it is evident to me that there is one team that stands out as more entertaining in general (cough cough Vultures.)
And Mal? Well this episode is kind of like the I See London of All Stars, in the sense that it’s a really good episode, but introduces a plot line that I really dislike. While I See London is probably the more entertaining episode, at least Evil Dread has the merit of not having a BS elimination.
-Gwen’s ‘three seasons of kindness’ thing. The best way I can describe it is her suddenly gaining Bridgette-esque morals, cause this is a far cry from season 1 Gwen. Gwen is a very morally grey character who could be argued to go on either team, and should be self aware enough to recognise that from everyone else’s reaction to the love triangle drama in TDWT, she’d likely end up on the Villains team. Did Gwen get amnesia sometime during the one year break?
-A lot of people say that they wanted Dawn to be on All Stars, but I kind of disagree. The way that Mal works as a villain and how Dawn is as a character means that she’d uncover his act quickly, which would mean that in order to maintain his identity, she’d either have to be kicked out early again or write some contrived reason for her to sideline the concerns of safety for the other competitors in order to keep it a secret. Or just have everyone ignore/dismiss her, which we already have with Duncan.
-Yes! An acknowledgement of how they completely drop the Duncan recognising Mal thing! I thought it was going to lead to a confrontation with Mal recognising Duncan back, and then directly contributing to his elimination or something? But nope. Nothing. Since Zoey doesn’t even believe him when he tells her that he’s actually Mal, what was the point?
(Also I feel like Gwen dismissing him when he brings it up to her is an example of the writers dumbing down characters to make Mal seem more intimidating and hidden. I can kind of understand why Courtney would dismiss him, and I get that Gwen is fresh off of a break up with him, but she should recognise that he’s not really the kind to lie about others. The specific reason they give in the episode as to her not believing him (Mike being too nice to possibly be evil) is somehow even stupider. Girl, you love horror movies. You should know that the murderer is always the person you least expect! At the least she should’ve taken it into consideration.)
-Speaking of Duncan and his elimination, him going to prison was while yes, shocking, also very very bullshit. How come he didn’t receive such a repercussion last season, when he blew up the giant Chris statue? Why didn’t Sierra receive such a repercussion when she blew up the plane in World Tour? It just feels like a pointless addition of insult to injury. They could’ve just had Chris kick him off like the aforementioned Sierra. The only reason I could fathom them doing this is for the exclusive clip?
-Heather’s elimination reminds me of the Lindsay cussing moment in That’s Off The Chain, in the sense that yes, it’s a cool moment, I really like the concept of Alejandro directly eliminating Heather, (or vice versa), but everything leading up to it is very sloppy and contrived. (Also sidenote: did they name the episode specifically after that moment?)
-I never really was that into Scottney? It kind of just felt like the writers feeling the need to put two characters from different generations in a relationship, and spun a bottle at random to choose who.
-I’m surprised you didn’t really go too much into Sundae Cruddy Sundae, but then again the internet’s already torn it a new one, so I can understand why. Honestly the most baffling part of it to me is that it was written by the same guy who wrote You Regatta Be Kidding Me, AKA the episode where the two literally make the promise to take eachother to the final two.
I swear, sometimes it feels like they didn’t even reread their scripts.

-I generally never really understood the perspective of Pahkitew being worse than All Stars. I get where it’s coming from, but to me, the desecrating and derailing a group of pre established characters we have grown to enjoy over the past few seasons, and displaying a harmful stereotype of people with DID having an ‘evil alter’ with Mal was always more infuriating than a bunch of lukewarm characters. Maybe I’ll get a better understanding when you release that video on Pahkitew you mentioned.

Courtney's derailment upset me the most tbh. She went from a character in island to generally being hardworking, with a bit of a temper, and a tendency to annoying to people around her, to a fucking whiny brat in action. I had a bit of hope for her during the first bit of world tour but then the Triangle happened and I was so over her. Seeing her in All Stars did not surprise me just filled me with resigned disappointment.
They didn't even try to do anything different with her after Island. I do wonder if they're afraid to even reapproach the issue now given all the furor they provoked over the character.

Like, what was the meaning behind why they wrote it? My guess is either a) they didn't think this through or b) some writers wanted to have a romantic relationship develop between Gwen and Courtney but the higher ups at Cartoon Network shut it down, and this scene just got left in by accident, or something like that?
If they wanted just a simple moment of friendship, there's a very easy, less time consuming way for this scene to go. Starting from when Courtney says "thanks, i almost got my hair wet", have Gwen say "No problem, Courtney", and then maybe Scott attempts to flirt with courtney but falls into the water, causing Courtney's hair to actually get wet, as the girls just look at Scott perplexed before laughing it off. There, I came up with that scene idea in 5 minutes and it's so much less forced.
The two biggest issues this season was the 13 episode format and the lazy storytelling. An All Star season is supposed to be everything we love about the previous seasons all in one but having such few episodes limits the amount of time we get to spend with these characters. I get what they were trying to do with 7 ROTI characters and 7 original characters but when there is only 13 ROTI characters and 24 classic players it forces the writers to cut important characters. Also I understand why they put Sierra on given she was one of the new contestants brought back in WT but her character does not work without Cody. The writing is definitely the worst part about the season. What made seasons like Action and Island great is the fact every character got a time to shine. Just because Owen, Gwen, Beth and Duncan were finalist never stopped other characters like Heather, Leshawna, Courtney, Lindsay, Geoff, Izzy, Trent, Dj, Harold, Justin and Bridgette from being well written and developed characters. In All Stars they just crap on all the other characters and make the season the Mal and Zoey show. Its especially painful when the whole season we get this awful character in Mal and at the last second Mike comes back and wins in some countries? It felt completely undeserved given Mike did nothing to get himself to the finale and it seemed like Mal was used to give Mike an interesting enough story to make it to the finals and once they didn't need Mal anymore here comes the "reset button" to literally force his character out of existence

Lightning wasn’t ruined for the exact same reason as Lindsay, they’re both dumb and both didn’t last long enough to be ruined.
Jo wasn’t ruined, she was always annoying.
Sam was ruined, like wtf was that pancake scene?

Gwen was ruined, the Gwuncan thing and then the friendship with Courtney was handled poorly.
Scott was ruined, he is so dumb this season compared to last time.
Zoey was ruined, she was never carried before but Mal carried her this season.

Hun Lindsay had progress since total drama and got so much smarter n she literally almost won and had so much development throughout the seasons then they just made her brainless in all stars

The fact you list Duncan and Harold as good and evil makes me feel like you don't understand Harold. You know there both villains right? People look at Harold and since he's a stereotypical nerd they assume he's a good guy, but he's really a giant douchebag when you judge him by his actions.

I like it, the only problem I see are the reward challenges, maybe reducing them to 3 reward challenges and have other 3 people in like Dawn, Lindsay and Harold joining them later on.

In the scene where we (somehow) see inside Mike's mind and he confronts all his personalities, Mal flashes onscreen for a second in the background, foreshadowing his role in All-Stars
So they didnt write themselves into a corner and then make him up later, they already planned using him

How I'd rank them
7= Pakitew Island. I can't think of anything positive about this season or any of the characters. It just seemed a parody of itself.
6= All-Stars. Had maybe 2 or 3 good moments. Plus having characters I liked already made it slightly more watchable than Pakitew.
5= Revenge of the Island. Felt really random and all over. I'd say about half the episodes are rewatchable.
4= Ridiculous Race. First 10ish episodes are so slow. But as you get closer to the end it's more enjoyable.
3= Action. About half the episodes ar kinda unnecessary. I know that due to less players they couldn't eliminate every episode but it still dragged in places. Also a ton of cringe humor for some reason.
2= World Tour. I loved this season and I am still tempted to put it as number 1, but...
1= Island. I think it's at the top because it was way unpredictable. You start the show thinking maybe Courtney or Gwen would win as they seemed to be focused on the most, but once Courtney was booted you became aware that nobody was really safe. Since that episode it was very difficult to predict a winner as everyone was on the chopping block at that point. Plus it wasn't so over the top and deadly as the later seasons got.

The idea of Mike having a (way less exaggerated than Mal) manipulative alternate personality as a villain is an amazing idea for literally any season other than an All Star season
Zoey legit won every challenge from Ep10 onward. She had the winning throw in challenge 2, knocked out Jo in 3, was given credit for winning 6 and got a free pass in 7
And yet she never figured out Mal took over 🙄
