Jon Bon Jovi Risked Rare Vocal Surgery to Tour Again

  • In this exclusive AARP interview, iconic musician Jon Bon Jovi reflects on the “immortality” of writing music and the fight to save his voice.
Bon Jovi opens up about undergoing thyroplasty surgery in 2022 to restore his vocal cords. After more than four decades of performing, his vocal cords were thinning, weakening his voice. Bon Jovi is still recovering, but he says his goal is to tour with his band again, singing “two and a half hours a night, four nights a week.”
Bon Jovi talks about looking back on his career thanks to a new four-part Hulu documentary about his band, “Thank You, Goodnight.” It chronicles Bon Jovi’s journey since its founding in 1983 with original members Richie Sambora, David Bryan, Tico Torres, Phil X and Alec John Such. The band rose to global stardom in 1986 with its third album, “Slippery When Wet,” which included songs such as “You Give Love a Bad Name” and “Livin’ on a Prayer.” Since then, the band has sold 140 million records and given the world hits like “Bad Medicine,” “I’ll Be There for You” and “It’s My Life.”
Bon Jovi details what’s special about the band’s 16th studio album, “Forever,” being released in June 2024. He says the album benefits from the depth of his “life experience” at 62 years old. At this point in his career, Bon Jovi says that it’s not numbers and accolades that drive him - it’s his love for his family and bandmates who trusted him “to take ’em on this ride.”
Bon Jovi is featured on the cover of the June/July 2024 issue of “AARP The Magazine.”

Let it go already. Phil X has been in the band for 12 years and is Family. Ritchie chose to leave.
It is what it is. Phil X is IN the band forever. No different then when we changed bass players.
Phil X brings Rock, Energy, Vocals and Stage Presence. He was the Savior for Jon and the band.
Ritchie left us 12 years ago….. It Is Over With Him.

Oh, Jon where did the time go? 80s big hair doused in Aqua Net, spandex pants, with the latest Bon Jovi cassette blasting in my two tone Pontiac Grand Am. Driving down 520 to get to Jack's Music and Records in Red Bank for the newest JBJ album on the day of release or for concert tickets at Count Basie. And now here we all are 40 years later members of the AARP. 🤣🤣✋✋
    Still my favorite band!
So glad your voice is doing better. Can't wait for rhe next concert when you're ready.

    Dear Jon,
Have you ever thought about the possibility that the lost of your voice could be linked to the psychologycal impact of Richie's departure? You say in the documentary that you started experiencing imperfections in 2015. Richie left in 2013. Maybe you needed 2 years to realize he was gone and won't come back and consider the consequences for the band.
I don't question the purely biological elements like the fact that your vocal cords no longer closed properly. But often physical and psychological are very linked.
In any case, I sincerely hope that you manage to find your voice again and also that Richie will come back. You are my favorite band. Your songs touch me personally, it really speaks to me, it resonates with my own life. May you sing together again for your publit who loves you. ❤❤❤

I think his atrophy comes from adductor branch paralysis(AdBP) that we first reported. the Vocal fold open normally in AdBP but doesn’t close completely. To obtain good voice, medialization surgery only is not effective arytenoid adduction could achieve complete result.
