No life jacket - Fail. No Leash - Fail. Poor advice for beginners, especially. You would get a ticket and your voyage would be terminated in CT from DEP or CG.
Really important section showing how to get back on the board , much more difficult on very buoyant inflatable boards but wearing a leash also important!
Any tips for someone with short legs and limited flexibility to get up on the board? I have a desk job so transitioning from kneeling to standing is a real challenge for me. I have only been paddling on my knees because I still lack confidence on the board.
Hahahahaha... ok. I'm NEW to paddle boarding... like way new... and my biggest problem has been getting back on after jumping off to swim (I only fell off once, go me).... now after watching this I feel like a total idiot... doing it ALL WRONG.... hahahahaha...
Great, informative video! I'm going for the first time with my older cousins and tomorrow and I would've been clueless without this video. You explained every what-if I had as I was watching this. Thanks!
And a few places in Britain. Weston Super Mare, Clevedon and Bristol. For some. Though I acknowledge that it is popular elsewhere. Oh - and what about the Ankle Leash ? Hmm interesting.
Thanks for showing the beginner's basics particularly on a lake and not the ocean since I am starting in Vermont. Very well explained and demonstrated.
Very well done video! One thing I would like to add is that there is no downside to a larger board. Meaning go up in size for more stability and speed. I struggled for awhile because the rental shop had me on a 10' board that was rated at 200lbs and since I'm 220lbs, that thing was a slug and too narrow at 29". That board should have been rated at 180lbs. For us over the 200lb mark, go 12' or larger and 32" wide or wider. I'm actually enjoying my new inflatable board more than my hard board too. Try both before you buy.
yes, that is a possibility, freestyle stand up paddle is not a discipline we have started competing in, but it is summer, so we might have to go out there and SUP Freestyle
Nice basics, but many places in the US at least the Dept Natural Resources or Coast Guard require you to have a PDF onboard, preferably worn but some states don't require you to wear it, just have it. A leash will prevent you chasing your board, and not all paddles float. I added a swim noodle to my handle to one, make it comfier to hold and two, help it float a bit. For novices buy a kayak paddle leash and connect it to your board via a D ring, even if it won't float, you still have the paddle and don't have to hand paddle to it, just reel it in. surf boots save your feet on land and on board.
Imagine that. I just got my first inflatable and haven't even tried yet. Its cold in Denmark in may so I want to get a wetsuit first. And TH-cam shows me this wonderful old and very instructional video. I learn from all the videos and this one must be in the top 10 👍
Nice demo! One thing shown in this video but not elaborated upon is the switching of hands. Paddling on just one side of the board will cause you to turn; if you want to go straight, you have to continuously go back and forth... do a few strokes on one side, switch the paddle to your other hand, and then paddle on the other side. Also worth noting is that there is a correct direction for holding the paddle - you want the blade to be angled forward (away from you).
i just got back from my first time out, did about 330 ft short of a full mile on a creek,,,my arches of my feet were killlin,,i rented a bic ACS 10' 6"
I wanted to see at the beginning where she actually gets ON THE BOARD! Not her being on board in water already! Is that the only way to get on, like climb board on ur stomach or what other ways is there? That's what I thought she was gonna show.
Oh it dont have to be the Bayou, but, I can tell you, the bayou is a beautiful place, I know, I own a small off grid cabin build on an aluminum barge half the size of a regular barge, its great living.
Thumbs down. Terrible advice. First time I fell i let go of the paddle (as per her instructions) and went for the board. Turned around and the paddle sank. End of paddle boarding day since the rental place is an hour away. Fail. Maybe mention SOME paddles float, Katie. Cuz clearly some don't
That's an issue to take up with the rental shop. They should not be sending out aluminum paddles without floats attached. Hope you got a full refund 9 months ago.
DDP not her fault for your lack of skills. Water sports are not for everyone. Her learning tips are good. I'm telling that after almost 30 years of practicing water sports.

No leash or flotation device? Hmmm...
Very nice video, really helpful! Thanks a lot!
... and having watch this vid, I'm now off to try for the very first time! Thanks for the great primer!
Great, informative video! I'm going for the first time with my older cousins and tomorrow and I would've been clueless without this video. You explained every what-if I had as I was watching this. Thanks!
quick tip: Paddle in flip flops, teva or whatever, they will save your feet.
Nicely explained.
Thanks!!
Thank you - I'v been wanting to do this for years since seeing a girl in Australia do it. Looking into London/Thames lessons today.
Oh! That's part of what I have done. Ah - still need the ankle leash though! Especially keeping it linked to you.
I have just had my first lesson. I love it, I started feeling it after 2 and a bit km. I will try the TEVA thing. Thanks for the info.

Good video, BUT why aren't you wearing a leash.
Motionboardshop website
Always the athletic 😅.
What about us fat old crusties?
A bit irresponsible. No leash, no pfd. Also letting go of the paddle on a fall is to be avoided if possible. Currents could make retrieval an issue
10 in taller then you is way to long ! Even on a 6 in thick inflatable .
Good video, but should have also mentioned to wear a PFD and a leash at all times.
Thank you for this video. Just purchased my SUP. Learned the basic tips. I can hardly wait for a good weather to go on the river. 👍
This is my favorite motion board shop video
No 1 safety is to wear a leash as you may loose the board and the paddle
nice demo and easy on the eye lol
Great tips. Thanks for posting. Can’t wait to get out and give it a try.
Great video. Thank you for sharing. :0)
Thanks really informative.
I appreciated her style of instruction!!! Donna
Thanks-excited to get out and try it on trip to San Diego.

i have one like this with asale
I am so getting one of these this upcoming season.
Thank you for sharing, this is very informative and easy to follow steps.
This stole my heart last year. Something about being on the water.

watching her get onto the board in the beginning would have been helpful to observe.
👍👍👍 we wear leash too
best tips 4 a beginner! thanx
Nice & Thanks :)
omg hi
No leash,PFD ?
Bon maintenant pratique pratique !!

Awesome video! Thanks so much!
Thank you 🎯
Thank you very easy explanation I just my paddle board for Father’s Day always wanted one 🙏🏼👏🏽
I know this is an older video but it is great! THANK YOU!!!
Hola,cómo estás?es rígida esa tabla?

This was a great video. Thank you have! I was happy to hear about the Carrier strap. I struggle a little more each year to carry mine.
Great Video thanks. I just got a sup and was looking for great paddling advice.
i just got back from my first time out, did about 330 ft short of a full mile on a creek,,,my arches of my feet were killlin,,i rented a bic ACS 10' 6"
Nice paddle! Werner makes the best!!
Excellent video. Going for my first time tomorrow and feel confident I will love it
To quote Joey from Friends..."How you doin??
Great video baby . Thanks
Thanks, great instructions🤗
Great instruction, Thanks!
i am so chubbed up right now.
Thanks for the video!
That’s such a cool board 👍
Darnit, she's married.
Are hard boards easier to get on than inflatables?
No, Inflatables are much easier as you are more buoyant than you would be on a hard board.
Right on Thxs for the instructional!
Very good basics.
unless your riding in big waves
this nice board
The paddle boarder
Great video!
Bon
thank you so much for the information!😁
What type of paddle board do u have wood or aluminum?
I wanted to see at the beginning where she actually gets ON THE BOARD! Not her being on board in water already! Is that the only way to get on, like climb board on ur stomach or what other ways is there? That's what I thought she was gonna show.
YOu missed it, rewatch.
During the 6:17 segment of the Video, you didnt notice the snake moving from your right side towards the bank.
I doubt it. There are hardly any snakes in the Seattle area, and nothing about that in the video looked like a snake to me. This ain't the bayou! :)
Oh it dont have to be the Bayou, but, I can tell you, the bayou is a beautiful place, I know, I own a small off grid cabin build on an aluminum barge half the size of a regular barge, its great living.
+Bkeytx I think it probably is a dry leaf from a tree or something that's drifting by the wind.
She looks so comfortable sitting on the board too. I wonder why there is not a sit paddling position?
ywang918 its basicly being on your knees, not sure if thats what you mean also its really hard to paddle fast while in criss cross or whatever
Might as well just get a kayak
Thumbs down. Terrible advice. First time I fell i let go of the paddle (as per her instructions) and went for the board. Turned around and the paddle sank. End of paddle boarding day since the rental place is an hour away. Fail. Maybe mention SOME paddles float, Katie. Cuz clearly some don't
+DDP Is this shit for real?
That's an issue to take up with the rental shop. They should not be sending out aluminum paddles without floats attached. Hope you got a full refund 9 months ago.

paddle boarding is so easy why do an instructional on it
