    A thing that I personally appreciate about your videos is that when you give a height or speed data, you always "translate" it to "metres/feet" and "km/h / mph" ... As a european guy, I hate to constantly have to convert feet to metres to know how tall a coaster is... So thank you for these details : )

    • @coasterbot
      @coasterbot  4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      I'm from the UK and we use both metric and imperial units all the time. It makes sense to give both because then everyone is happy! So no problem at all :)

      That's what I thought before I found coaster information videos. Instead of putting the best coasters on my bucket list, I put the tallest and/or fastest coasters on my bucket list because I thought the tallest and fastest coaster is the best

    • @keiyakins
      @keiyakins 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      True. ... I still wanna ride some of the extreme coasters though because they look fun. But I suppose if stats don't determine quality then it's just as possible for a high acceleration, tall, or fast coaster to be good as one that doesn't push it as hard, if it uses those attributes well!

    • @kinggremlin4574
      @kinggremlin4574 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Though that's potentially true, it isn't always. Fury 325 at Carowinds is the tallest and faster traditional roller coaster with a lift chain hill, and it has won the Golden Ticket award for world's best steel coaster 6 years in a row, or every year since its debut.

    • @Raptor3698
      @Raptor3698 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. I like record breakers, but quality is where it’s at. Sure I’d like to ride the fastest and tallest complete circuit LSM launch coaster on earth, but Kondaa, Helix, Wodan, FLY, Taron, Shambhala, Untamed, and Zadra are the ones I REALLY want to ride. For Japan, the Steel Dragon 2000 (aka the longest coaster in the world looks great but it almost seems like it would be just an enlarged version of the mediocre Morgan hypers), so Bandit, Flying Dinosaur, Eejanaika, and Hakugei are now at the top of the bucket list from that nation.

It features a 225-foot (69 m) drop at an angle of 60 degrees, a 209-foot (64 m) lift hill, and a maximum speed of 80 mph (130 km/h).The coaster was listed by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's tallest roller coaster in 1996. No worries, I appreciate you're looking out for other content creators. I first spoke to Christ about this video on the 7th October, a month before the video came out. We usually take weeks or months to script, record and edit our videos together. But the ball gets rolling well before that. I had the idea for this video a year ago and research began earlier in this year. But I wanted the video to be a collab so I waited for the right time.
      If we ever produce something similar to someone else, at roughly the same point in time, it'll always be coincidence.

  • @Paolo8772
    @Paolo8772 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Starting in the 70's: Who forgot Colossus, @SFMM; Loch Ness Monster @ Hershey Park and Desperado in Reno (the last one being in the mid 90's)? I could go back sixty more years before 1978 if necessary. I admit that most coasters in the U.S. operating before the Wall St. crash of 1929 have no record of them remaining. There were about 3,000 of them in the U.S. too! There are only about 650 in the U.S. now, and in China there are over 1,300! (albeit not as good on average.) There aren't many records remaining of any record breaking coasters from the late 20s through the early 70s. There are, however, still a large hand full of those records (and even a few still operating coasters) remaining that were build before the early 70's, but that's a complicated aspect of this topic and it'll have to wait another day, considering how long this comment is already. Having said that: I'm very happy to see that this topic is becoming popular again. Whilst stats aren't everything: Every coaster enthusiast ought to at least have access to those stats and the history of roller coasters breaking records, especially for the speed and drop. I'm curious, Harry, What was the longest coaster in 1975 you mentioned that was beaten by the Beast in 1979?
    Traditionally, record breaking coasters would potentially allow for bigger and taller and/or more numerous basic elements, eventually bigger drops and faster speeds and longer lengths and/or durations were used to deliver to us guests (now older coaster enthusiasts like me) the biggest duration of 1: sustained floater airtime, 2: speed, 3: duration; 4: strong positive Gs for troughs and short turn arounds to mix up the whole experience to add variety to the negative Gs; the the crown jewel of coaster elements. That was generally consistently true through the year 2000. While not as consistent it's generally still true today.
    As far as Six Flags Quiddyia: "Just take a look at the park's concept video and see for yourself: It makes No Limits fantasy coasters look vaguely realistic." That was very funny, Chris, LOL!

    • @coasterbot
      @coasterbot  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We did our own research on the records to verify what the well known record breakers were, and were surprised. The history of the world's tallest roller coaster that is common knowledge is wrong. Giant Coaster at Fuji-Q Highland opened in 1966 standing 40m 131ft high, making it taller than Colossus and Loch Ness Monster.
      As for the longest pre-1975, we've got it down as Big Dipper at Fairmount Park in 1923. It stood 1637 meters (5372 ft.) long.
      It's definitely interesting to see how roller coasters have evolved over time, and what is enthusiasts look for in roller coasters have evolved over time :)

    I think parks will continue to use records (both real & made up) for as long as they continue to sell tickets... we're just seeing a shift from the engineers actually _building_ the records to the marketing teams having to _dream_ them up! Because for every one of us who (rightly!) roll our eyes at the ads for the _"tallest, fastest, most inverted, mega-strato-gigantocoaster"_ there's 100 others who want to ride it because it's a record-breaker and/or it gives them one more reason to visit that park instead of another one. 🤷‍♀

    Tall roller coasters have become my least favourite over time. When I was younger I always thought, most important is a big drop and just the overall height. Nowadays I enjoy lower, faster coasters much more. Taron e.g. is by far my current favourite. It is just a great ride, great theming, overall an amazing expierence, so much more important than some stats.

    The reason we won't get new record breakers is there are enough chain park companies. You use to have paramount, premier, cedar fair, six flags, also with king island and six flags ohio not competitors anymore there is nothing to push cedar point to break insane records. Also cedar fair has more parks so lots of small rides makes more financial sence than a few big ones.

    I just realized that Cedar point has been breaking every "100s" height records. First was Magnum, with 200 ft, next was Millenium Force, with 300 ft, and finally TTD at 400 ft. They broke the hyper, giga, and strata height. Now it's only a matter of time before they break the 500 ft record...

      Cedar Point has never broken a height record. Moonsault Scramble was the first coaster over 200 feet, Tower of Terror II was the first coaster over 300 feet and Superman: Escape from Krypton was the first coaster over 400 feet. However, Cedar Point *did* build the first Hyper, Giga and Strata coaster.

    its so sad that Shockwave at Great America was removed instead of the Whizzer, Six flags was going to remove it to make room for superman, and somehow the public petitioned them to keep the Whizzer, a kid's ride that is not only annoyingly loud, but the turns hurt so much and there are no inversions. Shockwave was like a historical coaster, thankfully it still lives in another Six Flags park and operates to this day, but why people... why did you have to keep the 2nd worst ride in the park (first being American Eagle). I'm happy it was at least replaced by Superman, but still, I'd rather have 2 adult coasters instead of the defunct whizzer. I know so many people have to regret that decision. I miss Shockwave more than any ride.

    If I had the funds and opportunity to build a theme park I personally wouldn't be too bothered about breaking records as in my opinion the best coaster in most parks is rarely the tallest or fastest. I would still love to see the 500 foot ceiling broken though and I think it will happen in the next 5-10 years.
