The fact that Bulma calls Nappa “Trunks’ Uncle” despite Vegeta clearly not knowing that it was Nappa implies that Bulma not only got in touch with Nappa, but developed a strong enough friendship to trust him with her sons life without having Vegeta with her.

It's been three years but I just want to say that I always appreciate the line 'You are a bad dad and a terrible partner' from Nappa, it suggests that Vegeta is not actually being 'default saiyan' but that even saiyans think his behavior is atrocious.
It’s implied Vegeta was raised mostly by Nappa and the Frieza force. Probably in the old tradition of “keep the king under your boot by taking his son as a hostage.” It’s not clear how much time he actually got to spend on his own planet, or how well he knew his father. His MOTHER has never even been mentioned.
Now we need an animation of Nappa and Piccolo setting up a play date for trunks and goten
