I just watched a few of these DIY coaster YT vids. Also read the comments. Even with the edit mix I about the lining, this was my favorite YT video to help me make coasters. I also liked thy I didn’t have to worry about interfacing, or what kind of interfacing, etc. Thank you!
Just want to thank you for teaching me how to do this. I made my first one yesterday, but am realizing how much of what fabric I need, and all the little details. I was making a set but saw I had not been accurate enough in getting each square exactly 5x5 (size I'm making) but I knew I couldn't be perfect at first. I'm 71 and hadn't done any sewing since highschool 😁 but really appreciate your tutorials. I'm planning to have 2 sets of these for Christmas gifts, thank you again, Denise in Crescent City, CA. PS I decided to cut all my own since the pre-cuts (neither pack I ordered) had enough of one design to make these particular type, and I love this type 🥰
Oh my goodness, I've been trying to remember how to make these for years! When I was a kid, my neighbor made these with us, and i couldn't remember how we did it. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
This is great for those 5" charm packs I bought and didnt know what to do with. It also makes for a super absorbent coaster, all that fabric doubling without additional batting or bulk. Great for my cubicle. Thank you for sharing your talents and ideas with the rest of us.
Totally agree! Have a look at my latest t-shirt video. You can cut up your small pieces of fabric to decorate clothing or cushions etc…. Thanks for watching.😊
You are so welcome! Great idea for potholders! I am going to make a video for potholders soon too. Please share and check out some of my other videos. Have a great day!😊
Yes for sure! I make bowl cozies and fill it will a kitchen boa scarf and coasters and then tie a ribbon around the bowl for gifts. You can videos for those as well on my channel. Please have a look.🙏😊
Thanks so much! Try the kitchen boa, they’re so fun to make. Will have more videos soon. Am going to make a potholder one once I have some Xmas fabrics. Cheers!
I made one, used it for a week, washed it, used it again and I really love this design. I made 36, (9 sets of 4), to give as gifts. I have a tip about the overlap. When I made my first one my sewing foot slipped underneath the fabric of the overlap as I had one of the bottom strips overlapped on top of the upper strip. I then positioned the next one with the overlap always going from high to low in the direction of the sewing. I made about 5 each with the two different overlap pattern, as I wanted to make sure one method didn't slip or shift more than the next. Seems to be the same, and I find I can go slightly faster.
You’ve been busy! Maybe try building up some scrap fabric to same height just to put on the other side of foot while you’re sewing. Thanks for watching🙏😊
I can't wait to make some of these. Thank you for sharing. I'd love to have both sides of the coaster with the patterned fabric. Do you have a tutorial on that? Or any special tips?
If you need a simple gift that you can make up in no time, look no further! Sew up a few of these with your fabric scraps for a beautiful set of coasters. CORRECTION - the labelling of the base and lining should've been reversed at the beginning.
Thanks Mary. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work to sew it but the fabric of the tie may not be as absorbent as cotton if used with cold drinks…. Thanks for watching.😊
What type of material are you using for your base and lining. I bought batting but not sure if I use it as a base or lining. Sorry for such a stupid question. Love your close-up instructions!
Thanks so much for this tutorial!! They were so easy to make!! I have a kinda dumb question 😜 😂….What’s the reason for the curve when you cut the seam allowance? I’m guessing it makes it easier when turning right side out but I wanted to ask anyway. Again thanks so much! Subscribed and looking forward to future crafts ❤
I've watched many of this project and no one has ever mentioned this important step: Whatever fabric you use as you lay out the 4, that design will be hidden in the folding. Solution is to lay out your design on the side then flip all 4 over onto the stack before sewing. If you want a very specific pattern on the fabric to show on the final (such as a mushroom in the center, or bugs facing all the same direction) the 4 pieces held together and flipped is critical to get the desired finish. I've made many of these and it will take a lot more fabric than expected to get the right direction of the fold to be shown on the finish.
I actually filmed a whole other tutorial for fussy cutting fabric to get the part of print that you want. I never bothered to edit it as this video did not get many views. Use a clear template to make out the area that you want to show when completed to help with the cutting.
I'm confused. At 28 seconds in, you show the green fabric as the lining, but once you sew and turn everything out, the green is now on the outside. What am I missing?
Mine has finished with my lining on the outside. On your video you name the green as lining and it finishes up on the outside. I’ll unpick mine and change the order of the first 2 flat pieces- outside fabric on TOP of lining. no- one else has mentioned so maybe I am missing something.
81 is just a number!😊. Thanks for pointing it out. I think one of my problems is editing well into the middle of the night….. Please have a look at some of my other tutorials and let me know if you catch anything😊
No never but boy that brings me back! Remember her "interview" Andy Kaufman?LOL. She was great back in the day! Thanks for watching 🙏. Please share and check out some of my other videos. Cheers.
Well shown and well explained
So beautiful.
I will definitely try ❤
Brilliant! Thank you for your guidance!
Glad it was helpful!

Hi Denise! You are very welcome. Glad you started sewing again. 🙂
Thank you so much! I like both patterns
You are so welcome! Hope you give it a go😊
Great idea for scrap busting and for fundraising. Thank you
thanks again for watching 😊
Either way, I'm going to make some. Thank you for the video.

I love this idea. Thank you
Thank you. Easy to make and you gave such clear instructions.
Glad it was helpful!
Such a cute creative coaster! I will be making these for sure!
Please do!
Wonderful tutorial! The way you trim the corners is smart. I also like that I won’t have to fiddle with interfacing!
Glad you like it!
@@NotchesSewing thanks
I love your closeups! You have one of the best closeup tutorials ever ! Love it, love it.

FABULOUS FOR SCRAPS!!! I LOVE THIS!!! I can't thank you enough. And I'm off to make friends with my Singer ♥️👍💯🧵🪡
Fantastic!
These fabrics are so pretty especially the butterfly print... I also make potholders like this using a 10 inch square. Thanks for sharing!

Super cute

Make them with layer cakes (10 inch squares) and you'll have a nice sized cosy for larger bowls, vases etc.
Great idea!

Just use the same fabric for all layers.😊
Ok, thanks!!

Ingenious!
Very beautiful, but without badding, does it stop the heat going through?
Thank you. Yes as it’s several layers
I really like this pattern. Do you think this coaster pattern work with men’s ties?
I also enjoy making your hanging tea towels.
Thanks Mary. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work to sew it but the fabric of the tie may not be as absorbent as cotton if used with cold drinks…. Thanks for watching.😊

I just used quilting cotton for all the layers.
@@NotchesSewing Thanks!
What can you use inside to make it a little more water resistant, especially for the summer - that would also be easily machine washable?
Maybe neoprene or rip stop
❤❤❤❣

That’s just my way of minimising bulk. You can just cut on 45 degree angle. Please have a look at some of my other easy tutorials. Cheers!
@@NotchesSewing ahhhh I see! Duh, how’d I not figure that out 😂 😜 Yes of course, I’m definitely watching a lot of your tutorials! Xoxoxo

0:26 base and lining material ???
All quilting cotton
@@NotchesSewing thanks for replying ❤️
What are you using as a lining.
all layers are quilting cotton.
What all the things we need to make this
everything is listed down in the description.
Is a kitchen scarf the same as a kitchen towel?
No the scarf you can wear around your neck
Could I use felt as the lining?
I don’t see why not as it will be nice on any surface. I’m just not sure how it will wash? ( I don’t use felt for any projects…. yet)
I'm confused. At 28 seconds in, you show the green fabric as the lining, but once you sew and turn everything out, the green is now on the outside. What am I missing?
Sorry yes I put a correction on my first comment. I should have labelled it in reverse. Thanks for watching.
What would you sell that at?
I don’t sell them so I can’t offer business advice. You will need your calculate your time and materials

Not missing something. You are the sharpest one out there. I should’ve reversed it on the first coaster as it is the base in the second.
@@NotchesSewing Thanks so much - that's a relief at 81! No problem - I've adjusted my instructions and am delighted with the results - made 4 now.

I had the same issue with the first one, fixed it on subsequent ones,@@NotchesSewing
I'm having a hard time lining up the squares to be even
Make sure to cut all the squares evenly
Also you don't use batting is that the best way
You can add a layer of batting between the bottom layers if you want a thicker coaster
Anyone ever tell you that you sound like Elayne Boosler?
