  • Avalanche Lake Trail is a stunning hiking route in Glacier National Park, Montana. The trail is approximately 5 miles round trip and is known for its breathtaking scenery, including towering cliffs, lush forests, and picturesque waterfalls.
    Key Highlights:
Starting Point: The trail begins at the Avalanche Creek Campground. The parking area can fill up quickly, especially during peak season, so arriving early is recommended.
Scenic Views: As you hike, you’ll be treated to views of towering mountains, vibrant wildflowers, and the rushing waters of Avalanche Creek. The trail winds through a beautiful old-growth forest, making for a serene experience.
Avalanche Lake: The trail leads to Avalanche Lake, which is surrounded by steep granite walls. The lake’s clear waters reflect the surrounding peaks, creating a postcard-perfect scene. There are often waterfalls cascading down the cliffs, especially in the spring and early summer.
Wildlife: Keep an eye out for wildlife, including deer, elk, and various bird species. This area is rich in biodiversity.
Best Time to Visit: Late spring to early fall is the ideal time for this hike. In late June, you’ll likely see wildflowers in bloom and plenty of water flowing from the waterfalls.
Trail Conditions: The trail is well-maintained, but it can be rocky and uneven in places. It’s considered moderate in difficulty, making it suitable for most hikers.
Overall, the Avalanche Lake Trail offers a beautiful and rewarding experience for anyone looking to explore the natural beauty of Glacier National Park.

Hello there Randy and Caly...I just subscribed to the VIP option for the magazine. I am going over the past digital issues (loving it BTW) and anxiously awaiting my first print copy!! I do have one question though. I there an index somewhere so I can look up an issue/article on a specific destination when I'm planning future trips?

Hi Joe, Thanks for the comments! We are actually exploring different ways to index our destinations right now. It's a massive undertaking because we have so many different platforms. Right now, the best thing we have is the search button in the digital magazine app. We have found that if you search broadly, it works best, meaning searching for "Texas" versus "Austin." Unfortunately, this is only for searching magazine articles. This leaves out our blog destinations and podcasts. Stay tuned, as this is something that Randy & Caly are passionate about (indexing) and definitely want to have down the road.
