Shame, shame on those who criticize this excellent 510 overview video. As a new rider struggling to choose a training aide, I found this most informative, so thanks!
you CAN use this device for navigation, so long as you are able to preload a route, say a training route, or a predetermined touring route. (I've used the 500 for touring) the advantage here is that it is able to upload routes via bluetooth. also, you can edit the data fields on the navigation page, which is a HUGE plus, because on the 500, you're forced to look at distance to end and time till end, both of which are worthless. with the ability to control the data fields on the navigation page, you can see the map and your training metrics at the same time, which imo is a huge benefit over the 500
I literally almost fell asleep from his emotionless expressions, and monotone voice. The music had me thinking that Garmin wants us riding our bike's through the cosmos.
@hiro111 Did you try both? I ride anywhere between 15 and 110 miles. I want to see phone with GPS on, that battery can last the whole ride... Batter in my little Garmin 305 can last over 11 hrs... Battery in most phones I owned with GPS on lasted "very short" time. Add riding in the middle of nowhere, and your phone will be dead in no time... Just my 2 cents...
garmins are much more accurate and offer longer battery life than the standard smartphone. plus it's smaller and easier to set up on the bike to look at as you ride
Imo, the "live tracking" is the sell point on the 510....going to a race where a friend/family member is racing, will make it much easier to spot them. That said, my old 500 just died on me (run over by a car..RIP) and i went with another 500...still the best overall "bang for the buck" cycling computer.
Can anyone tell me- is it more battery effective to put Garmin 510 screen on time to always on (with minimum brightness) or to put to 15s or 30s on time (with 50%-60% brightness) during rides? Because screen touch quality is pretty low, and I'm afraid is a bit of hassle to tap on it every minute or two...
Haha! We're sure that the only infinite power source Jeff believes in is his own legs. It's not 100% clear from the video, but he means you can share the GPS signal from the Garmin with your phone, and just use the phone battery to upload data to the cloud, instead of hammering both batteries at the same time.
Obviously the accuracy of Strava on your phone depends on the quality of the GPS it has, which seems to vary pretty wildly. You also may not want to put your 500 quid phone in a hot and sweaty back pocket for hours at a time.
My Garmin edge 500 has a bug when I am fallowing a course. The line sometimes disappears for 1 minute or more. Garmin never fixed that terrible bug. Does this bug exits in the 510?
I hope Garmin will put the option back of adding different bikes on Gamin edge 1000. This is very useful option when i had the edge 510. Garmin please. I upgrade to edge 1000 for more features but i didn't know that the option to have different bikes and naming each one is no longer on the edge 1000. Please add this option on the edge 1000.
I believe you can. You can set up your Garmin Connect to also upload to you Strava account. So from there you can download the Garmin Connect Mobile available for iOS and Android, upload to that app and it will automatically upload to your Strava. Garmin claims you can do this, but I've never tried this myself since I have the older 500. But their regular Garmin Express PC app that uploads to Garmin connect also uploads to my Strava.
It happens when tow points in the track are very far, and zoom is near. When there is no points to show in the screen (because near zoom), the line that joins them hides. Edit routes and add points when they are very far (long straights), and It doesnt happen any more. I add points so there is no more than 500m between them and never happened again.
hey i don't have a smart phone, but i want a garmin that i can use for mountain biking and upload to strava. i want to use strava. my question is better for mountain biking and strava together the 510 or 800's
for your purpose the 510 is the best choice.I had a 800 before the 510 and almost never used the navigation functions. So I sold it and bought the the 510. This one got a better gps signal than teh older 800 even inside my home he will find satellites. There are some drawbacks. For example sometimes the connection to my I-phone isn't working that great and I have to boot the phone and 510 several times before they connect again. Sometimes (very rare) it takes a long time before a ride is saves. But further than that there are no major cons. Its just a lovely device with lots of options for a serious cyclist (road or dirt). I also love the feature that automatically upload a saved ride to Garmin connect and then to Strava where I share my rides with other cycling friends.
hansdegebruiker hey thank you soo much, i am looking at the 510 now. Not that many people talk about garmin or strava with mountain biking. Or the features that would be useful in mountain biking. thank you for the answering my post.
I seriously doubt that the Garmin is "more accurate" than Strava. I ride with people who use Garmins and I use Strava, Our results occassionally vary by perhaps 0.1 miles over a 50 mile course. With that level of similarity, who cares who is correct. If you manage to wear out a phone battery in one ride, I salute you. Buy a $40 Cateye if you need something to look at while you ride. App-based solutions are cheaper, much easier to update, much easier to sync and much more flexible.
After my second Garmin Edge 520 died unexpectedly I decided to try something different - the Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt instead of the Garmin 530. Boy! I'm glad I did. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxXZCtB-wGdHVTBSz8RswePK5vllHNi06N The display on the Wahoo Bolt is much easier to read. I like the configuration of the display more (up to 7 items visible on page 1 without scrolling and the first item chosen is larger characters than the next 3 rows that have pairs of items (still very readable). I also like the configurable item selections. The Bolt synced with my Garmin ANT+ Speed sensors on both bikes easily so no additional investment was required there. While the rated battery life is a couple hours less than the Garmin 520/530, I easily get a weeks worth of 1+ hour rides before recharging (and it's never really low on charge). At the end of a ride syncing to the Wahoo app, Strava, and Apple Health app is painless.
Most people are carrying their phones when they ride. Given that apps like Strava exist and offer superior functionality for free, why would anyone need a Garmin?
In my opinion the Garmin 510 is an over priced piece of rubbish. The amount of times you go to upload your ride and see that it did not record properly. Elevation is always way off the mark. Would not recommend it

Again, thanks for your input and concern but the retention on this video is very respectable, especially considering it runs for eight minutes.
Great review when I could keep my eyes open....
Gocycle hypnotic

I did
Best bit is at 3.12 where you let a little bit of suppressed laughter pop out!! Let the happiness out man :-)
Sweet! Just ordered me the 510. Time to retire my Garmin 200. Can't wait to get it. Great review.

@hiro111 I agree with you. It's silly to say which one is more accurate. It's all about practicality and what's useful for you not no one else.
garmins are much more accurate and offer longer battery life than the standard smartphone. plus it's smaller and easier to set up on the bike to look at as you ride
Great video! I'm using 305 now and I'm really happy with it, but my next choice will be 810 since I need maps also.

I can agree with Drower. Is there any reasons for picking the bigger 810? I am currently weighting the Edge 500 to the 510. Not sure which to buy.
Is there any reason at all to pick a 810 or 800 over the 510 if you don't need the navigation features?
Which Garmin Edge has the map functionality?
The music's really ominous, huh?

Is there any heart rate belt connection at any of these devices?
I hope Garmin will put the option back of adding different bikes on Gamin edge 1000. This is very useful option when i had the edge 510.

Well thanks for your input, but we think Jeff's expertise is the most important factor.
Did he say that it won't drain the battery of your computer or cell phone if you connect the computer to your phone? An infinite power source?
Great review! Good job! May you do a review for garmin 910xt please?
Can you upload rides wirelessly to strava? I dont have a laptop and only upload via the strava phone app.
I believe you can. You can set up your Garmin Connect to also upload to you Strava account. So from there you can download the Garmin Connect Mobile available for iOS and Android, upload to that app and it will automatically upload to your Strava.

Which edge would u recommend? 800 or this
How does the touch screen respond when you're wearing a full-fingered glove?
It's pressure sensitive, not electronic so you should have no issues with gloves on.
*****
Commonly known as resistive touch instead of capcitive touch (found on most if not all smartphones today).
So it's a bigger/heavier 500 with a touch screen and higher price tag. He didn't mention any new feature that matters.
Wireless Garmin connect iq connection and auto uploads alone can justify the.price, however my answering a five year old cant be explained any way

garmin 510 or the 800.. ? which one is better?
thanks for this great review, ,just what i was looking for
Great review..
I love my 510
Sold my 800 and bought the 510
No regrets at all.

Sorry for my spelling errors (looking at a small window typing with my big fingers)

Does the Bluetooth connection compatible with Strava? Anyone thanks
Jason Stroman works with Strava
I'm sure Jeff know a lot about the product but viewer retention might be the issue.
Why is that? It works with gloved hands and while wet...
Why did he save the ride?

I feel so happy now. And sleepy:)
So... really aside from a slightly nicer interface there is no real benefit over going for the 500...
No map?
struggled to "just keep myself interested!"
A dedicated device to working out and GPS functionality is more accurate.
I almost fell asleep. Very boring to listen to IMHOP.
Great product, terrible reviewer... Sorry but find some enthusiasm....
Why is he holding both of them upside down at the beginning :L

riveting review
升级之后没有中文了!还要返厂刷机!太麻烦

Heart rate monitor and 510 Garmin
Well like the saying goes , if you have nothing nice to say , say nothing .So i choose to say nothing ,which really says alot.
SO SLOOOOOOOOOW!
factually correct, but bit bland. its a very good bit of kit.
This guy is depressing.
I started watching this video in January but fell into a coma and just woke up now. So boring
I was interested in acquiring this unit, but after watching this boring review, i'm just going to keep my 500.
lol
No offense but the Global Editor in Chief SHOULD NOT be starring in these videos. The audience needs to see a more lively, louder individual.
Please lose the background "music" its horribly distracting and overbearing.
I suspect that this device, with it's Live Tracking feature, will be popular among women who suspect their cyclist husbands of cheating.
navigation is terrible
Nope.
This guy was so boring I stopped watching after 45 seconds.
First comment think its crap
Because he's drunk.
Obviously useless for mountain bikers...with the touchscreen and all...
worst background sound ever
Jeff needs to clean his nails.
The most boring review on You Tube
