Thank you for another "How To" episode! I don't think its that you have terrible VLOGs, I just think that your soccer drills are amazing and so many technical points to keep in mind. The VLOGs are good because it shows that you are humans and you have a lot of energy outside of soccer training. I hope this is helpful when you continue to provide the drills and vlogs.

Love this. For sure don't mark the space but also be aware of the space the attackers may exploit. You may not want to get dragged out of space by 1 player which could be exploited by another player (late runner) Also need to factor in the dangerous areas where goals come from in your decision making. Good work though boys!!

Great video Joner, would like to see how to shield the ball when in possession for example proper footwork and balance of the body. Most midfielders have an excellent touch on the ball and some lack the technique on how to place body while keeping the ball, would be awesome to have drills set up for that technique.
    Thank you. #jonerthebest

Great stuff great detail also on how and where to clear a lot of players just clear... Coordination and Feet work on our defenders we must push... Strikers seem to always have quicker smarter movements but if defenders are aware nice and early they can close it down quicker... 🇿🇦

  • @KASOCCER

Yea, but in reality that's NOT always possible. If the attack is coming fast, which is usually the case with top professional teams, you will NOT be able to run backwards fast enough and balance yourself at the same time.
The BEST solution is to run in front of the center attacker, while learning to develop eyes behind your back. NO, I'm not joking. Good defenders know fairly accurately (most of the times at least) where exactly the attacker is positioned behind him. When you play soccer long enough, you will develop a good sense of where the players around you are located, even while running. And that's what you want to work on, because that ability will also help you in many other aspects of the game.
Now, why is staying in front of the center attacker advantageous. Several reasons. First and foremost, the motion and momentum of your body is in sync with the attacker. Therefore, the attacker can not zoom by you while you're facing the other way. Second, if the ball is crossed short, you can prevent the attacker from taking a quick shot at the goal by simply sticking your foot out in front of you and deflecting the ball away. In contrast, if you were facing the attacker, you would have to run sideways, especially if the cross is coming from around the byline. This would most likely allow the attacker to get to the ball first. In that case, your only option would be to try to stick your leg out and block the shot. Not a good position to be in. Finally, facing away from your goalie prevents you from knowing if and when the goalie intends to come out to clear the ball himself. But if you're keeping an eye on your goalie as you're running in front of the attacker, then you can always step out of the way if the goalie signals you that he's going to intercept the cross. Also, if your back is to your goalie, you can actually end up blocking your goalie's line of sight in the center.
The BEST strategy is to run in front of the center attacker (not too far in front, but several feet), and have a second defender run right next to him. That way, you cover the attacker in case of a short cross, and the second defender covers him in case he drops back to take a cross further from the goal, or if he goes off to the far post due to a long cross. If a second defender is not available during the attack, then the next best option is to run a bit further in front of the attacker, and try to compensate accordingly for being short a defender.
In this video, the examples which were shown where goals were made on defenders who were running with their backs to the attackers are NOT due to errors by those defenders (although most of them were running too far in front of the attacker). Rather, the fault was with the second defenders. They were not doing their job. They were too far away from the attackers. They should have been much closer.

@@JonerFootball I appreciate your response. Perhaps you can take a look at this video, and tell me in which of the scenarios the defender could have gotten in front of the center attacker, turned around to face the attacker, and then defended in the manner you described? Personally, I only see one. And that was a case where the attack was quite slow, the defender was already several yards in front of the center attacker, and the cross came from an area pretty much parallel to the center attacker and defender (that's the clip from 3:34 to 3:38).

My Question is, when you defending a cross from deep and the Attacking team (winger) he’s driving the ball without any pressure, he ain’t gonna cross the Ball for example if his Stricker is being marked by the defender , so even if you step to the 8yard box he’s gonna try to get closest to the goal as possible ... a bit confusing but there is my question, what would you do???

  • @tiagomonteiro3510

Good video but I disagree on the part that you cannot mark space, instead you should mark the striker. I believe you that in a individual context, like 1vs1 on the box, it's useful, but to a certain extent. When you defend as a team, a player's ability to read a situation (a cross in this case) will take him to protect the space, as a way to antecipate the striker - if you get to carried away with man marking the forward he can beat you a fake movement. As you said we have to watch ball and player and when you the ball and player you can an idea of where the cross is going to be delivered, thus antecipating the play.
