OH, MY STARS, seriously the BEST BEST BEST video on rose trimming! I'm normally scared but now I'm excited. Such a perfect explanation. LOVE your videos!
Good morning Jenny! Thanks so much for sharing this with us, I especially appreciated it because I have always found Rose pruning particularly “challenging “🙏🏼 maybe now I will have a little more confidence with this necessary task!👍🏻
My local ag office was super helpful with the fungicides and recommending classes and how to alternate them, since we get black spot so bad. Alternating different classes which is that they work differently. Really, really helped reduce my black spot load on my roses this year!
@GardeningwithCreekside I actually mix Bonide's Mancozeb concentrate and Bayer Advanced Diseases Control for roses concentrate, which has Tebuconazole. They work differently, I think one is systemic treatment and one is more topical preventing initial spread. The ag extension office said either alternate them or mix them, which I find easier. I only sprayed a few times last season and while I did still get black spot (I live in a swamp) it was better than previous years. This year I will up my frequency and see if I get more improvement.
Thanks for sharing this valuable information, Jenny. I love it when you do this for us because it's our great reminder to get out and prune those babies, lol.
Good golly, Jenny! Great job on this tutorial. I finally understand how to prune my climber thanks to you starting at the base and working your way up the canes. I also feel better about my deer pruning a leader every now and again knowing a new leader will come from the leftover cane. The photos of a dead cane and new growth on the shrub rose were a smart edition. It’s always a pleasure; you’re a joy to watch.
Good morning, Jenny☕️I planted my first two roses last year. One is a David Austin climber and the other is a yellow rose standard and this video was so helpful. I didn’t know I’m supposed to defoliate them! Have a Blessed Day 😊🐶
Jenny, I have heard you try to train you leaders in a side way s form going up trellis, that way your shoots that come off the leaders will produce better ? Of course those are the shoots you trim back to flower. Have you heard that? I’ve just got my first climbing roses spring 24 and have started that process.. Thank you so much for this video.❤
I have the DA Gertrude Jekyll 3 years old, she’s a Wild Child at the moment…time to clean her up! Also have 2 DA Gabriel Oak shrub rose ( Love their fragrance so I have a couple of more coming) my first experience with these. Love your instructions and “ just prune it! “. Thanks Jenny! !
Hi Jenny!!!!! I’m the same way. Every year I say, no more roses. Late winter comes around and all I want is some new roses. I have 5 bare roots waiting to be planted. 🙆🏻♀️🙆🏻♀️🙆🏻♀️🙆🏻♀️
I think I’ve been over pruning my roses. I usually take my roses back to 18 inches & leave only a few thick main stalks, nothing thinner than a pencil, remove all crossing branches.
I live next door in East Tennessee, zone 7b. I see on your website that you provide consultations for landscaping. Can you do them with a photo(s) since too far to drive? Love your channel!!
Hello Jenny . Question … my climbing rose is I year old and after being moved in September from an area that is was not thriving in , it looks amazing !! Still itty bitty but beautiful blooms . Do I still defoliate? I am in Coastal Central California 9b. Thank you for the video ❤
Thank you for this! I'll be doing my first spring rose pruning soon. It is sort of intimidating. Question: A couple of my roses have new basal canes that have shot up which I'm thrilled about. Do I prune those just like any other cane? My roses are all relatively young, less than a year in the ground or pot. So I'm a little nervous about overpruning. And I certainly don't want to damage a new basal cane. They still look red and new. Looking forward to your upcoming rose videos! I have four David Austin roses coming. God help me. But they are addicting! I swore I would stop with what I have. But I can't resist them. Even if they clearly don't like summer here in Houston. But they loved fall and some of my roses are still blooming! Our winters are so mild here. Course I say that and next week they are predicting snow. Ha! Thanks again!!
So not surprised this popped in my algorithm because I recently Googled rose petals because of an idea I had for a dish and in doing so I found out that they've been used in culinary before. However I would have to grow my own because stores and florist use pesticides. So my question to you is what do you spray yours with? And if you do use sprays that aren't harmful for consumption, can I buy from you to say me time? I also noticed you mentioned NC well I'm in SC and I wouldn't mind the drive if that worked better for the preservation of the roses. Thanks for reading and sharing your knowledge with us.🙏🏿
Question, so, when you're pruning, you're climbing rose. Do the roses bloom on the new growth witch is the side shoots? The canes that are on there right now will not have roses on them, Is that correct? I just love your videos. I look forward to them every morning. Thank you for continuing to educate me and inspire me.❤❤
I have four miniature roses that people gave me as gifts. At the end of Fall, I moved them onto my greenhouse. If I am going to move them back outside, do I cut them back now?
I have a first year DA climber. How should i prune it after the first year? Some of the taller canes are very small in diameter. Do I attach them to the structure and will they thicken up?
Hey earlier this fall I bought your special edition clay tip auger and the drill kit that was suggested to go with it. I used it to dig 2 holes and even used a shovel for some only to find it completely stripped the drill and also partially stripped the auger. Thoughts? It was very nerve racking and I thought was supposed to work in clay soil conditions. I live in NC.
Hi! Hmmm, it sounds like perhaps it wasn’t tightened enough. Feel free to shoot us an email at orders@gardeningwithcreekside.com so we can better assist you.
I use your comment - ‘grace in gardening’ so much…I’m not sure if this is a good thing or it means I’m experimenting too much! 🤷♀️ however - I’m thankful for your sharings 😊
I have several 'new' David Austin roses. Last year was their first year. Would you consider those established? Can I prune them or must I wait another year or two?
You definitely need to prune them, but it will be slightly different than an established rose (3+ years in the ground). Here’s a video where I take you step by step to pruning a first year rose. th-cam.com/video/j3DWegw-wio/w-d-xo.htmlsi=9jhhBZWbmMVD0k09
I ordered a Scepter’d Isle bare root last year. It bloomed a few months later…. The wrong color! They mixed up the bare roots. I’ve ordered it again this year… hopefully it’s the right one 😂
Thanks for sharing. My question, I'm in Alabama zone 8b(very close to 8a). This whole month jan lately, we have had plenty of temp below freezing here (no snow). So do you still prune knowing more freezing nights is coming? So far, the weather says we're be back in the 20s next week.
Hi Jenny!! It’s your friends from Belmont here 👋🏼 Love your videos and garden center ❤ We bought the drench from yall for the jap beetles. Should I be applying that now too? Also can we fertilize the roses now or should I wait a bit?
My house came with roses that seemed to pop up in the ground. For years I tried to pull them out. Now I am trying to let one live and see what it does. How do I know what kind it is and how to care for it? Zone 3b Manitoba Canada
My grandfather was a rose farmer, but I have none! I afraid to grow them because here in the northeast they get those black spots all over them and that makes them look terrible! Convince me please to try🤣🤣🤣
Ideally, you want to prune your roses before they begin flushing out with new growth. It will depend where you live & your climate as to what time on the calendar you do it.
Thank you for this rose pruning techniques, well, working for NYBG we do have a Rose book written by one of our Rose curators that can help seek out particular disease resistant types. Referenced book: Roses without chemicals : 150 disease-free varieties that will change the way you grow roses / Peter E. Kukielski, if interested. I always enjoy all your gardening daily blogs. Good morning! I just put an order in with y'all for some Felcos 2, harvesting shears, maintenance kit, and gloves. I'm getting ready for spring! I bought a rose standard this fall and I'm a bit nervous about how to shape it. I've got a question…so I'm moving some roses that have been here for many years (owners before we planted them). How far back can I prune them? In all honesty, they're not looking so great…which is why I'm moving them. They weren't very good gardeners. 🫢 Could I prune them to a foot tall? They're all 5+ feet tall.
@@barbie3166 you sure can! I would trim them back to 12-18” and then dig them up. Get as many roots as you possibly can. What zone are you? If you’re similar to me then now is a great time to move them. I’ll be doing the same thing in the next week or two.

Isn't it crazy how early they begin to wake up??
I’m in Georgia too, west of Atlanta, but mine are still very asleep!!💚
Ohhhh hi gardeners from GA. I’m ga 8a west of Atlanta as well. Happy gardening my plant friends. 😊
