Hong Kong's Localist Revolutionaries - People & Power

  • They call themselves localists - a movement that wants semi-autonomous Hong Kong to split from China, amid concerns that Beijing is cracking down on political and cultural freedoms.
    But throughout 2016, as pro-democracy activists (many of whom had previously aligned under the gentler coalition Umbrella Movement) became more radicalised, seasoned China-watchers began to wonder whether their calls for independence would prove a provocation too far.
    People & Power asked filmmakers James Leong and Lynn Lee to follow events and find out.

    what a stupid question .. 'from where did this local ideology spring?' hong-kongers NEVER wanted to be back with China. Why would they. Let alone tibet and the rest, for their own thing. They are colonials, not communist ... they grew from being open, not dictated to. China has already changed the face of hk and they said they would keep the laws as the brits for 50 years...

    Hong Kong is a fascinating country isn't it?
    A little disturbed by those protestors harassing mainlanders coming in to buy cheaper goods.... Those people aren't the central government. They're just regular folk looking out for themselves, and it's not like they're stealing those goods... It's also not like Hong Kong isn't wealthy... Who's really losing out when mainlanders come in and pay for goods? The merchants are willing to sell to them, so what's the problem?

    As locally elected officials to serve Hong Kong, they chosed to get elected so that they can get into the legislature not to work in the legislature, but to wreck it and prevent it from functioning, and pursue a course towards HK independence. It is the most ridiculous of position and one which does not serve the wishes of the 7,000,000 people in HK. Democratic politicians should not be like that. It is self contradictory!

      They should try their best to voice the concerns of HK people and take opportunities in politics to support actions which benefit the under represented groups., instead of unproductive objection politics that makes everybody angry and frustrated.

    4:23 It isn't unclear why they were allowed to run. They were allowed to run because it was known that they would take offensive actions that are counterproductive to an independent Hong Kong movement. It discredits the movement by portraying them all as offensive disrespectful troublemakers.
    The same strategy was used by Israel in Palestine by sponsoring Hamas. By sponsoring the most extreme opposition, it allowed Israel (or the Chinese government in this case) to discredit the opposition as a whole.

    中国大陆和香港之前可能有一些分歧和冲突,但是这一次是不一样的。作为一个大陆人,我很不希望看到香港变成和大陆一样没有选举权,没有言论自由,没有法治的墙内,无论是从人性的角度还是从自私的角度。只要香港还拥有法治,大陆就总有希望。六四的时候香港大力支持了学生运动,四川大地震香港捐款上亿,说明香港和大陆是有血缘有感情的。怎么能只看坏的方面呢?不能说人家给你捐款的时候说是爱心人士,现在抗争就说人家是废青吧?人权永远高于主权。我们支持香港的原因,也是支持我们自己

    • @jz1650
      @jz1650 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @naranhan2010 第一,现在中国的国旗国徽不是从古到今都不变的,他们代表的是现在政权而不是我们民族,所以他们并没有反华,你说他们反大陆人我也没看出来,我只看到他们抗灾积极募捐,64三十年来每年都纪念,大陆的外资百分之七十以上都从香港来。第二,你要弄清楚,国家的存在是为了让人生活得更好,否则为什么要有国家的概念?近代国家主义是从二战后才兴起的,都是国家机器宣传的原因,你不要真的相信那些假大空的虚话,主权高于人权这句话本身就很无耻,没有人何来国?第三,你在家里把你孩子杀了,邻居来敲门制止,你说这是我家事,你不能管,世界上有这道理吗?美国已经连续世界第一七十余年,也没有像纳粹或者苏联那样搞的世界乌烟瘴气吧,不要有被害妄想症了,以前中国江泽民时代还韬光养晦,现在习近平还提吗?下一个要侵略他国十恶不赦的只会是中国,十恶不赦的只有中共。打这么多字累死了

    Say why dont China wait for 2024? The right question should be who is actually pushing China to intervene more quickly before 2024? Supposingly you have children at school with no issues; you will take much less control and let them do whatever they want as long as it is within the border set by the parent. Now if your children start to have issues at school and trying to go beyond the set of border already set - would you as parent begin to intervene? Of Course you will intervene to set the course back to the track.

    the only way u can gain independence is through war, by pushing the Chinese forces back when they attack. Question is r u willing to take up arms and possibly die? You would need help of course, Taiwan can be your ally. Declare independence together and stand together when the Chinese forces come, stand together and push them back. America can also provide help, given that Trump is president now, and he is against China and would very much like to see them weakened.

    Can HK ever achieve independence from China? That's being unrealistic, isn't it? You can wait until the cows come home! Joshoot

    • @atatkk
      @atatkk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      of course it can. US just set up a military base with 2 aircraft carriers, 2,000 jet fighters and 100,000 troops, then China would not dare attack HK. Of course HK has to pay US 100 billion to maintain the base, import waters all the way from Taiwan, food from Vietnam, then elect their own president, with a little help from Trump. See? its so easy.

      @@atatkk : hahaha........it reminds me of the Philipines' case.............HK is China..........that would be 3rd world war.......nuclear war and HK would be turned into smithereens..........anyway why would US do such a stupid thing?............look at the numbers.........it's mind-boggling!...........they would be thinking "how much oil revenue can we get out of it".............wtf...........HK is a small fart.........thanks for the good laugh.........
