When I was in college, I spent a summer in a house with people from multiple countries. The Romanian girl asked us what Saint Patrick's Day is all about, and was nonplussed when I said that he brought Christianity to Ireland. She asked again what it's *really* about, and was surprised that it actually is about the bloke who made us Catholic.
Was actually a pretty cool dude and despite being super effective (whole island was mostly converted within a hundred years) his methods weren't approved of by the Catholic Church in Rome and so he was kinda regarded as a rebel outlier so that's pretty Irish. Rome just cared so little about the island on the edge of nowhere that they weren't gonna interfere too much with Patrick who basically evangelized through community outreach outposts. Like I'm not even Catholic and I like Patrick. He's my fav non-biblical Saint. Well him and Joe Strummer 🤣
I'm not sure what she expected, but then I'm Czech, not Romanian. We have two holidays in succession in July, one is about the two 9th century blokes who brought Christianity to Great Moravia, the other is about the 15th century guy who criticised the church and got burned at the stake for his trouble. Most Czechs are just happy to get two days off work in summer.

I remember the prayers to St. Anthony in the classifieds section of our newspaper when I was kid. Made me wonder if St. Anthony had a subscripton to the Cleveland Plain Deader.
And in Orthodox church there is st Fanourios (the name is self-explanatory since it derives from the Greek verb for revealing) and in Greece (I don't know if in other traditions they do it to) used to make special pies as an offering when they wanted the saint to reveal where the lost items where. They considered it so pro magic that the saint would even reveal to the unmarried women the man they would marry in the form of a dream, if you putted a pie next to your bed at night.

Boston isn't the only city to gye their river. Chicago does, and even my little suburb on the far outskirts of the Chicagoland area dyes the Fox River.
Last year I didn't celebrate St. Patrick's Day because it's when confinement started in my country. This year it made me sad to still be confined a year later, so I didn't celebrate either. Maybe by 2022 I'll be vaccinated, out of confinement, and I'll have a huge reason to celebrate.
