Inspired by Feral Woodcraft's video, as well as a few other channels' videos on their top 3 survival tools, i decided to chime in on the matter. Depicting an urban/desert survival scenario, i demonstrate why my choices are my 6 inch Self Reliance Outfitters Ferrocerium Rod, my Self Reliance Outfitters 32oz stainless steel canteen and my Victorinox One-Handed Trekker multitool.

There is no one answer. We can add items until we have a 20 pound pack!

James, I can say with good experience you need more water, and more water and more water if you live in a desert environment. Two of us that worked out field carried 10 gal water jug and was near empty at the end of a 12 hour shift. The temps were 105 in the shade. Good choice in the knife. Keep it coming.
True but running from zombies you may not be able to carry a 10 gal and run fast enough ;)

Living in Arizona and trying to find likeminded humble humans who understand preparedness in an applicable way to daily city life. I think if you can only carry three items for a survival situation, you have done a good job and as you stated they items are very low profile. In the city if you carry a folding knife, people still look at you funny. They are not prepared to make it to their car or home to pick up the EDC or Bug Out bag. I'm going to the desert and I go by the three's in my kit . I have 3 ways to start fire, 3 knives, and 3 water containers. 1 tarp , 1 sleep pad, 1 wool blanket. Anything else I need I can scavenge. This also makes my kit very light weight. Love the desert and your videos.
There’s something innately interesting to the filmography. I want to call it “Americana” in a way, with the guitar and architecture, but that’s not quite right. It’s a little bit Fallout, a little bit Dave Canterbury, and a little bit of something I can’t place my finger on. The reason most people choose 32oz water containers is because most chemical water treatments are for 32oz of water.

2 32oz as opposed to one 64 gives you the option of having one potable one untreated or one ready to drink one waiting for chlorine to work, whatever, the not putting all your eggs in one basket thing.

It is now 2019 so I am late in watching this video. Your choices seem well thought out if 3 is all you get. Lately I have been carrying the Victorinox Rangergrip 79 (big brother to the Trekker). If one watches “Vinnie’s Day Off” and Felix Immler’s videos they will see how useful a folding pocket knife can be in a survival situation, particularly an SAK. Of course, if you get more than 3 items a good reasonable sized fixed blade would be a nice addition. But, I do not feel under-knifed with my SAKs. Good video.

Agreed on the knife and the urban scene. Multitools are the way to go! For again URBAN scenario. Always got mine on my belt. Ferro and stainless steel bottle are a must have !

Totally agree it is 2016 and the chances of "our" survival environment is most likely an urban environment vs wildernesses. Plus any self respecting 1800's frontiersman would give anything to have the latest tech vs the existing tech from those times. So the question is more "are you a Bushcrafter or Frontier Reenactor when it comes to implement choice. I truly believe 1800's Frontiersman would choose the latest tech vs traditional. Just my opinion.
i completely agree, they made do with what they had available at the moment but if they had the opportunity for superior or more resourceful gear, they would take it in a heartbeat.
Coming late to this party, but, the outdoorsmen, explorers, pioneers, & military of yesteryear took complete advantage of the best gear that was available to them that they could afford. And for anyone to claim that it was good enough for my great grandfather, then it's good enough for me, is missing the point of survival in the bush. We are not reenactors, we want to survive. If you want to do it the way it was done 100 years ago, then you are play acting. To plan on surviving, enjoying a camping trip, getting through a natural disaster or a canoe trip gone bad...you want the best equipment available, and lots of it. The nice thing about living in the times that we find ourselves is that the choices for excellent equipment was never better. Why hinder yourself with stuff that our ancestors could only dream about, when modern tech, in tents, knives, water purifiers, etc. is only a "click" away?

I carry those 3 as well, but my edc has grown to a 2nd tier level that is kept in my vehicle so where ever I am my vehicle isn't far away. That 2nd level kit includes food for 3 days (dehydrated ) , fixed blade green river knife camp type, GI poncho, ruger mkII 4" 22 lr pistol 3 mags and 300rds, extras stuffed here and there is cotton balls,lighters,bullion cubes,drink mixs,teas, I'm still debating adding a crossman1322 22 cal pistol and around 300-400 pellets for small game such as pigeon, doves,rabbits ect even with an added shoulder stock it is a compact weapon.

I love your choice of tools for survival in the desert and the three items you chose is what I would choose also if in that environment. I have two canteens for water and one of them is plastic and the other is metal and the plastic one has a filter in it to help me in keeping water which is fresh. I have a Gerber folding pocket knife which is a nice backup knife for food and wood processing. To start a fire I have two fire steels in my pack and they have the striker on them.
Sure you need a knife, a trekker, is a good choice, and a way to cook food assuming you have or can obtain some. You need a canteen and some method to purify water. You need a water tight outer garment such as a poncho with hood that can also serve as a wind breaker/shelter. I don't mean make a tent, just wear it and lean back against a tree while setting. A light handy hatchet/whatever for making shelters would be nice. A bedroll. A wide brimmed hat that will shed water. What else is going to depend on local circumstances.
I think you made great choices and gave great reasons for those choices. I am liking your channel a lot and am looking forward to seeing more videos from you in the future. Thank you my friend.

Outsanding choices! Due to your experience in the field I bet you had no problem coming up with those pics. Shelter can be made or found, cordage made or found, having a fast fire and reliable long term fire method like that huge ferro rod for cold desert nights is better than carving a bow drill set so you can carry a blanket or coordage. Plus your knife has a saw blade for notching etc.. I like the leatherman surge got to have the pliers for wire work. I agree, Those are for sure the TOP 3 choices for down here in the chijuajuan desert southwest if you are only limited to 3 items of course.

Good picks, I actually picked up the one handed tracker on your advice and I am very pleased with it as a back up folder.
glad you like it. ive carried my trekker on my belt everyday for the last 6 years.
I use the 64oz ss bottle. I carry my water in a pair of military 1qt canteens MOLLE'd to my pack, and I can boil enough water at once in the big bottle to fill both. In addition to a large ferro rod like yours, I also carry a magnifying glass lens (I'm sure we all remember setting things on fire with magnifying glasses as kids, lol). It's about 3" diameter and 3/8" thick. I believe it's about 6x. I had an old magnifying glass with a cracked frame and broken handle, so I salvaged the lens. I keep it in my pack in a cloth drawstring bag that came with some Sony earbuds I bought. It's pretty heavy duty glass, and as long as I have sunlight I have a good backup to the ferro rod. 👍

I like your choice of knife. In fact, I own the same knife and have thrown it in the truck, with a large firesteel, a 32 oz. stainless steel canteen with a nesting cup lid and spork, a flashlight with a headband so I can also wear it as a headlamp. All this in a Condor Case with a shoulder strap. I like the idea of the flat grind on the back of the screwdriver as I too have cut myself on the saw as a striker. Thanks for the tip
I completely agree with your reasoning for your top three tools.
I would chose a locking blade multitool if traveling in an urban big city... Thankfully I am in a rather rural area in the NorthWest so my Blade choice would be/is a 5-7" sheath knife. Been packing one or more since elementary school. Kids get suspended/jail time for what we did every day back then. Guns in trucks,hunting before and after school...almost everyone carried a knife. Nobody went nuts.

Hey man, just to let you know , a stainless 1.1 liter GSI boiler will nest really nice with the 64 oz. bottles. I carry a Klean Kanteen EDC.

Yep, can liners contain BPA and PVC, among other chemicals.
Wasn't hard at all to reaffirm what I thought I remembered from long ago. Don't eat straight out of a can folks, especially not if you have used the can to cook!!!
1. EDC (yes EVERY day) LT Wright Next Gen, Leatherman Wave, Light my Fire Ferro, applied green stropping compound to belt.
2. Klean Kanteen.
3. GSI nesting cup, I really like the longer handle.
Im a big fan of the multi tool over a fixed blade... Many dont agree with this philosophy and it is rather refreshing to see someone else that shares that opinion as well. 3 items in an urban setting... Yeah, I agree with your choices. Good vids bro... You just got another subscriber.
I didn't expect to learn anything from your video but when I saw you get that paper to light the fire you processed it to give it more surface area to make it catch fire easier and quicker to.

Those three items are my choice for desert survival, but I keep a full tang knife for my primary usage when away from home on a camping trip, and I keep a folding knife as my backup in my backpack.

That would my choices also, it covers all the needs. I like that location, cool old farm structures. I would definitely set up camp under that old barn shed, if the framer did not object. Thanks James.

Yeah, my Victorinox Camper is the knife I use the most by a long chalk and a BCB Crusader 2 canteen cup (1 litre capacity). I liked your use of the old magazine as tinder. An old newspaper was a must have item of kit when I first started, it's free, you can dry your boots, pack eggs in a mess tin, to wrap food stuffs in, as tinder while you sort out the natural stuff, answer the call of nature, I've even used 3/4 as a sleeping mat. The bush craft ''purists'' don't seem to like it these days but some will buy tinder from a store?? Thanks for the vid!

Good choices - can't knock your reasoning. I also carry a Trekker along with a fire steel. Only difference between you and me is the water bottle. I use a stainless canteen with nesting stainless cup. Virtually the same thing.

3 great choices. I like the idea of the swiss army knife. I've carried swiss army blades and tools for years now. They stand up to just about anything.

I'd give you 100 thumbs up for knife choice if I could! I carry the Vic Outrider or Huntsman as my woods EDC. Have you checked out the new Vic Rangerwood 55?? I ALMOST pulled the trigger on one. Very, very nice. Larger locking blade and a huge saw blade. You other 2 items are spot on also.

great video! i love the scavenging section in the beginning and your friend's music is really great. those are some solid choices too. personally, i would carry my leatherman surge instead of a swiss army knife for a one tool option because it is far more versatile. don't get me wrong, i love my saks, but the leatherman opens up a lot more possibilities, especially in an urban environment. having the interchangeable saw is nice as well. i can switch between different types of saw blades for different applications and the extra blades don't take up any room in my kit. the leatherman is definitely more bulky, but i think it's worth it. just some thoughts.
+cap10random i see your point, and the leatherman is an excellent choice, but i seldom use mine, since i dont use pliers often and its a bit heavy, so i remain loyal to my swiss, but thats just my personal taste, leatherman is great though for urban survival.
My Dad came to me in a dream (he passed a year ago) he told me to get small pocket knives or “daggers” I asked, “ isn’t a gun better? He said, guns will be useless! Get one like I used to have and then I woke up! My Dad used to always carry pocket ones similar to yours. I still wonder the significance of this dream. A metal nesting cup with folding handles will fit around a 32oz Nalgene water bottle, can be carried in a Taco style bottle/belt holder.
I liked the three choices you made and I also think that in an urban area those would be superior to a lot of what I see people carrying.

Smart move using that knife, has many uses other than just a blade and its better to use what your used to. I have the "trekker" as my edc. Big knives are not legal to carry in some states. I would have picked the same 3 things you choose. I have a canteen and cup though, I'm in florida though, water everywhere so I don't need so much storage space for water. Good video, keep them coming.

Love the video, your three choices, and even the knife. I don't carry a Swiss Army knife, but I do carry a belt folder. Too many think first of batoning with a knife. That's my last thought. If I have to baton with a knife, it means someone has stolen everything I have on me, but somehow overlooked my knife. I carry a knife and a small hatchet on my belt, and a Silky Pocket Boy in my pocket. I love the knife, I love the hatchet, I love the saw, and I know how to use all three. I don't need to risk breaking or dulling my knife by beating it with a club. Anyway, my three cents, and the video was great. Geeze, make a movie.

I own several multitools, however, what I actually carry most is a Swiss Army Trekker or RangerGrip 79 along with a pair of Knipex Cobra 125 pliers in the same pouch.

Very nice video! Excellent points and choices! We all should think about the environment that we live in and what we may need for that location! I.e.. I live in ft worth probably don't need a pair of snowshoes with me! :-)
