    I got my German Shepherd, Tiberius, less than 2 weeks ago, he's 4 1/2 months old now. For the first week, I had no idea what I was doing, and the advice given to me by various family members was all about domination and they told me to spank him, and 'show him who's the boss' and my aunt even told me that because he's going to be big that I need to get a pinch collar now. I was so confused and getting a little frustrated after that first week, but my husband and I didn't want to to get rough with him and I started searching out more positive training techniques on the internet. I discovered your videos on Friday evening and watched about 4 hours worth of videos. Saturday I taught Tiberius to 'sit' at the vets office surrounded by distressed dogs. Now, 5 days later, he knows the basics of sit, stay, lie down, leave it, go get it, and let go. And he looks at me when I ask him to and comes when called most of the time. I am so grateful that these videos are available because they saved me from making horrible mistakes. Thank you so much Zak!

    My dog (lab mix, 4 years-old) has been always more hype than other dogs, but as she grew older it got to a point where she gets too excited and becomes aggressive towards other dogs. I know it will take longer to re-train her since she's not a puppy anymore, but she's making progress slowly. I learned a lot from this video. Thank you!

    My pup is a rescue dog which I found hiding around my car at my home one morning, three weeks ago. Her name is Belle (the beautiful lady in Beauty and the Beast) and she seems to be roughly 3-6 months old. Growing fast! She loves learning because of Zac's methods, wow!

    Thanks, this is exactly the video we need with our 7-month old lab mix! She is super friendly, loves dogs and people but a little too much! After great recall, we had a really hard time getting her to pay attention to us when trying to transition her recall to the dog park. Thanks so much for the video, the tips and your overall training philosophy!

      Slowly, but yes we are. Takes a lot of patience! She's 10 months now, and at this point does turn to us when we call her in the dog park, maybe 50% of the time? Much better than 0!

    we got Luna from the shelter and the vet estimated her age at 3. she didn't know sit, stay or lay down (in English, anyway,) but she will not get on the furniture even if you want her to.., (unless there are fireworks.) We've been enjoying your videos and working with her 3 times a day after her walks. She's learning lots of great things. She's dog reactive, and we're making lots of progress with that too. Thank you! Your videos have made training so easy, and your positive attitude feels just right!

    I rescued my first dog about a month ago and he's turning 7 in August. He's a mix of great Dane and Brazilian mastiff. I also just got a puppy and he's 7 weeks old. Mix of malamute and husky.
    I got the puppy young because the mom couldn't feed him and his brothers anymore. She was in a puppy mill and was saved when she was a baby herself. Then she got pregnant because the neighbour of my friends has a Malamute and he jumped the fence while my friend was inside getting something.
    I'm a happy dog owner and your videos makes it much more easy to learn how to train my two babies.

    Got my boy Dexter when he was 4 weeks old. His mother stopped caring for him and began losing weight so the individual allowed me to take him at 4 weeks since I had so much experience with puppies. He's 9 months old now, and a Look At Me champ! Your videos have been such a huge help with training him. He's an American Staffie, and I've never had such a large indoor dog before (my other dogs are all older chihuahuas). Your videos have really helped me curve his behaviors. He has a future as a registered Emotional Support Animal for me :)

    I can't tell people how much I love your methods. As a vegan I believe in what you stand for and how you train (communicate) with your dogs. I got Ollie when he was 7 months old and all of his training has been from watching your videos. We go hiking all the time, but two days ago he ran away from me and ended up chasing a car that his (he's a little over a year now) beloved dog friend was driving away in. Luckily a guy in a plow truck grabbed him and returned him to me. After watching this video, I think I have to take a step back and go back to some basics. I never ever want him to do that again. Thanks for all of your videos, and KEEP POSTING because we KEEP LEARNING!

    We adopted our dog a couple months ago when he was 9 or 10 months old. He's about 55lbs already so training has been a bit of a challenge because he's big but still such a puppy. When he came to us he was very high energy and very distracted, but we've been working on basic training and he's getting better, I think now that he knows us he's settled down a lot and training is getting easier. Cats and other dogs are still too distracting for me to get his attention, but it's getting better since we discovered his love of cheese :)

    I love how you approach training dogs. I've only been subscribed for about a month, but I have probably seen all of your videos. We (my boyfriend and I) really want a white boxer. I was nervous about when to go to a dog park. I had previously gone to one with my cousin and her English Springer Spaniel puppy... she was pretty distracted and frustrated. But you make this seem quite easy as long as you keep your patience. I hate it when I see owners yelling angrily at their dogs. It breaks my heart. You bring out the best part of dog training. Keep inspiring owners. Thank you very much.

    We are in the process of looking at and possibly adopting a three-year-old shepherd/lab mix. We've been told that she's good with other dogs and kids and walks a leash pretty well. Her description also includes the fact that she had delivered a litter of 8 pups while living on the streets, which indicates that she had been homeless for some time. She looks like a bright, healthy dog... from the photo. But it's just a photo.
    Wish us luck, folks. I am SO happy that i found Zak George's videos in advance of the adoption. I'm usually cynical about how-to videos, but i can see me actually achieving some success using his methods.

    Hi Zak. Congratulations for your work and dedication to our best friends! I got Nico from my city dog pound 3 months ago. He is a 4 years old half huskey / half shepherd and has been a real challenge. He spent the last 3 years in the dog pound, closed, no regular walking (because he runned away every single time and he is very dominant and allways looked for fights) and had no afection to human beings. He would stand on his back legs against the wall just to not be touched by anyone (he only left one guy in the pound touch him). He was next on the list so i decided to save him. I must confess i allways have had dogs during my entire life and this seemed a challange to my commom sensed trainer skills. Your videos are helping me understanding positive rehenforcement but i cannot understand why you avoid so much the physical contact with the dog. I don`t think i could have had managed to get the results i have now past this last 2 months without showing the dog who's stronger... physically. The results are: sits, stays, comes to my voice, rolls, jumps and walks with and without leash, plays with other dogs (he is still agressive with big dogs that bark to him.... which i think for his protection it's a good posture) Sure sometimes he likes to test the limits as a good dominant dog he is, but strenght outbested treats. This is all about who's alpha and giving him food rewards and petting him seemed (were) unefective. I think because i didn't miss...what he had never had before (even if by the end of the first month i had him spoiled with all he never had) Anyway i would like to learn more about your techniques because i really think you have skills but mostly you have the heart, and that my friend.... it's essential.
    PS. I did not beat my dog, never strungled him and never used constrictor collars but i squeezed him with a "thight embrace"and after 2 or 3 times trying to bit me he stopped doing that and rolled over as in submission. I know i'm probably doing some things wrong that why i would like to get in touch with you, also because on September I'll start a dog trainer course here in Portugal (The first in Portugal recognised by national, EU and international authorities lectored in a University) and your knowledge would be a strong suport if you are willing to share it with me (i'll do the same if you think you need).
    Best regards Zak

    Another great video! My wife and I just got a new Aussie so we have another opportunity to go back through all your videos to get him up to speed with our 18 month old! I just hope the frisbee is as good of a reward for him as it is for her. One thought on a potential future video would be incorporating two or more dogs into a game of frisbee...
    Also, loved the plug for where the red fern grows... I've read that book over twenty times and it's funny seeing the similarities in my dogs, our girl is small but very smart while the new boy is lookin to be big but powerful. Wish my wife woulda let me name him Old Dan, lol. Thanks again for the great videos

    About a month ago, we adopted an australian shepherd/border collie/blue heeler mix who is now 14 months old. We met him before we adopted him and made sure that he wasn't a spaz as some dogs with these breeds in them can be. He knows how to sit and walks pretty well on a leash...until another dog comes into the picture. He pulls and tries to go play with any other dog that is within his sight. When off leash, if he sees a dog 300 feet away, he will take off running to play with the dog but ignore us. He loves us when we're in the house so fortunately we have that. I hope that we can train him to be as well behaved and as good of a listener as our collie/chow mix was. We took him through training including Canine Good Citizen Training. I plan to watch more of your videos and hope that we can train this new boy to be a good dog.

    I adopted my dogs when they were each 3. They are now 5 and 4. One is a border collie/cocker spaniel mix, and the other is a mini Aussie/dachshund mix. My border collie is extremely excitable but very sensitive to correction or frustration and has troubles picking up some of the basics (down was VERY hard) but she has recently shown a lot of enthusiasm for more agility-like training. My mini Aussie mix is very food-motivated but has next to no interest in human interaction or approval.

    We have a rescue dog approx 11 months old. He looks like a Siberian Husky but shorter and slightly more muscular, he has white fur and is pinkish around his nose so maybe crossed with a Bull Terrier. He's made great progress since we've had him, but still reacts like a crazy boi when we see other dogs on walks, or even if he can smell one through a fence (not aggressive just overly excited). It's really hard to get his attention when he's in this state and distractions only seem to work for a split second. Even though he's only 25kg I think the mix of his breeds makes him a very strong puller so you can imagine how difficult it is to get him under control when he's in this mood. He losses all interest in treats, jumps wildly in the air, yelps, and just wants to get to the other dog.
    I'll keep at it but I feel like if he doesn't change this soon it might become a normal behavior when he sees other dogs.
    Thanks for your videos btw, they have helped us correct a lot of bad habbits he had.

I watched your video on how to teach your not to jump and we're trying to train him. He does sit few times during this crazy greeting period but then goes straight back to exciting mod as soon as my friend tries to pet him. He also like to mould while he gets excited.
    Sound like troublesome but he's a happy pup and been learn tricks from your video very well and fast. It would be great to hear some of your advise at this stage. Also I would like to see more obedience training videos. Cheers!

    I got my current dog when he was 2 (I guess 16 or 17 in dog years) he just turned 3 on Feb 17 and he is one of the best dog I ever had (he is my 10th dog). One problem I notice about him is that he gets distracted VERY easily, but I am going to try to help it with that back trick or sliding down the slide :3.

    What if your dog cant be distracted with treats or his favorite toy? My dude goes into some kind hyper focus on the other dogs and nothing I do can get his attention until I pull him away. Any tips would be appreciated. I want to take him places but cant 😪

    • @azed5251
      @azed5251 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      This is a problem, you never really see the trainers address. A lot of us use these techniques, high value treats as a reward for looking at the owner, training far enough away that other dogs aren't too distracting, but no matter what, it seems that there is always a point at which another dog is too close, too distracting. All the rewards for "look at me" at less distracting distances don't seem to allow the dog to get any closer.
      I have a Rhodesian Ridgeback who loves other dogs, more than any treat (definitely more than any toy-not a toy motivated pup). He will whine, whines turn into barks, barks turn into lunges. Of course, if I can pull him far enough away he will respond to "watch me" commands and happily take a treat, but there is always a point where we are too close and the urge to interact is too great.

      @vampireprincess0212 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@azed5251 Exactly this! He listens to me so well that I can just give him a hand signal as a command and he'll do it but when it comes to other big dogs theres just no breaking that focus he has on them unless I remove him (which isnt easy since hes a 120lb Akita lol). Hes so well mannered in every other instance, even with smaller dogs, but I just cant get him to focus on me until the other big dog is gone or I pull him away. I've scoured TH-cam for tips and have found nothing but the tips in this video. It's pretty frustrating.

    • @azed5251
      @azed5251 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@vampireprincess0212 and even more frustrating is your case is going to be different than mine. I am guessing, that because your pup is an Akita, he is on alert as a protector. My boy is bred to chase and harass lions (Rhodesian Ridgeback) so he is a sight hound and he loves to play ... chase and harass games that your boy would likely neither enjoy nor tolerate.
      Both dogs have very different reasons for being hyper-focused on other dogs.
      I am guessing, that for you, (hopefully) breaking the problem might be a bit easier as you can ensure that you are always between the "threat" and your dog, that the leash is always loose and that you aren't worried. Maybe even refrain from feeding him for a day, then take him to a controlled space where he can watch other dogs but be calm and then feed him (might take 100 times to sink in and for him to associate other dogs with pleasant things).
      But, this is just speculation. My dog is that one pup that when off leash, has his head in every other dogs face or butt, stuck to them like a magnet. He doesn't care at all about people (sometimes people seem offended when he doesn't care about being pet by them). But, as soon as there is a dog, he is like "oh boy oh boy oh boy, someone to play with, a butt to sniff). And when he doesn't get to play, he throws a tantrum (whines loudly).

    • @vampireprincess0212
      @vampireprincess0212 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@azed5251 I believe his is 100% protection based. He gets in front of me and tries to push me back without taking his eyes off of the other dog. If I attempt to get in between he shoves me back with his butt again and will lock his muscles so he cant be pulled away easily. He's fine with females, puppies, and small dogs but big males are a no and so its hard to take him anywhere. I've tried to do training with him like you suggested (no food and then reward with food for calm behavior) but nothing but removing him gets his attention. I love and hate that hes so protective of me Haha it is definitely an Akita trait and it's one reason we got an Akita but I wish I knew how to train him to where he doesnt react unless it actually is a threat.

      I'm having this exact problem with my German shepherd/great Dane. He is totally obedient in the house, but the second we are outside and another dog walks past he wont even look my way, he whines until he gets to see them, which he rarely does because his whine scares the other dogs. I want to be able to take him places because I know he would love it, but I just cant get him to focus

    My dog will always bark and run towards another dog if he sees one and he completely ignores everything I say and he's only focused on the dog. It makes trips to the vet and seeing other dogs while walking him a real challenge. How do I fix this? Is it maybe because he doesn't interact with a lot of dogs? We don't really make him interact with much dogs because of this problem of his.

    Hello! I have a year old pit we have only had for about 2 and a half months. His training is incredible thanks to your help and the videos (since I live all the way in oregon) haha. He has trouble with barking when he hears other dogs barking, he is more auditory stimulated to bark at them. Its funny because seeing them just makes him happy but when they bark he does and its hard to calm him back down. I mean my boyfriend and I could be watching TV, and if a dog barks on the screen that makes him very interested into where that came from and barks back. How can we make another dog barking into a positive situation for him? We are really working with him is positive reinforcement key? Because it makes us want to avoid walks because of other dogs will bark at him, and thats no fun for either of us. What do you think? :) -Juliana

      Carol, your experience with your puppy is very normal!! Puppies are often glued to us at first (just long enough for you to let your guard down lol) then after a few months they start getting much more interested in exploring and interacting with the world around them, and testing their boundaries... It's very much like a "teenager phase" ;) The best dog trainers are always prepared to take a step back in their training to patiently remind their dogs how they've been taught to behave! Try not to get frustrated and enjoy this super fun time with your pup!
