  • This video is to show the use of a Yo Zuri Hydro Minnow to target Striped Bass from the surf. We've caught Striped bass in this area a few times and this trip, although not the best, was great to highlight the action and castability of this lure in the wind.

    I just picked up a few LC at my local shop. Different sizes and colors. What budget rod and reel would you run with these size baits? Subbed to you the other day. Great videos. I just got into surf fishing this summer. My areas would be from Monterey to bodega bay and everything in between. Thanks for what you do.

    Rod recommendation: foriegn made Lamiglas X-11, 9' to 10', med.-mod., lighter braid. About $100. Should help send those under 1 oz. jerks to the desired zone.

      The 110 sizes (4.5") seem to get bit more because that's typical forage size. higher percentage. Big fish still eat tiny baits. Yo zuri and sp minnows have a time and place. usually late summer.

    Just got back from fishing on northwestern California coast. I didnt have any luck on my 2 lucky craft flash minnows 110. ( metallic sardine, and aurora black. ) i used 40lb braid with 25lb flurocarbon leader. All the days i fished the ocean was calm as a lake. No wind either. I think my problem is that i cant cast the lucky craft far enough. I was probably only getting 25 yards. Maybe more. I use chest waders to get out far as i could. But up on north coast we have a strong undertow. It Will suck you out and under and well you know the rest. I had a couple waves above my waist all most knock me down. Normally i can huk any lure or bait setup halfway to Hawaii. So i dont think it was from lack of effort.
    What length and rod action do you have for your poles? Maybe my 2 poles are too stiff to have a good whip action. We did catch plenty on the crustez. They worked great on the red tails. ( Thanks Bobby) !!.
    Thanks again for another great video. !! Cheers Bro.!!

    • @Hook2Cook
      @Hook2Cook  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Recon scout I prefer a 8 1/2 ft- 9 1/2 medium action rod. The key is in the lure rating from 1/4 oz to 3/4 oz. in the description, there’s a rod for about $50 that works really well.
      Bobby thought it was cool to see you give him props btw. Thanks for all the interaction bro. Glad to hear you had luck on the crusteaz! Lol part of the reason they’re all sold out in motor oil

    • @reconscout5994
      @reconscout5994 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Hook2Cook Thanks for the reply!. Both my poles are 10ft. I did notice on your videos that your waves are not as big as some up north. If i stood out there in waist high water or so during high tide i would get sucked out by undertow.
      We used crustez on 1 hook and tried other baits on 2nd hook including sand crabs. The red tails bit on the crustez 9 out of 10 times. Love em' . Thanks again Bobby secret bait Man. Haha. We are going back in about 3 weeks to do more fishing above Eureka Ca. I have another 10ft pole that i didnt try. It is a ugly stik med action. We will see how it goes. Good luck on your future fishing ventures. Get that stripper. Fish on Bro!

      @@reconscout5994 something you don't see talked about often is the # test of your line for casting light lures. 40# +/- line is very overkill and will really affect your casting distance. Drop down to 20# maximum and you will see an improvement. In general, smaller diameter line = longer distance.
      Also, he is totally right about getting the right rod lure rating for these lures. A salmon/steelhead rod from 8' to 10' with a lure rating somewhere surrounding to 5/8 ounce like Hook2Cook said is almost vital.
      Okuma SST rods are very popular for this and relatively cheap.
