Excellent analysis as always! Such a wonderful service you provide and it is reassuring to see that the numbers prove that, except for in Manabi, the crime rate is improving significantly. I hope you and Kris have a blessed holiday season!
Thanks Mike. I saw these numbers and thought, trending right although I'm hearing of more violent crime in the circles I run in. Yes, Cartel on Cartel seems to describe the majority of the violence. Ecuador is welcoming more Venezuelans and historically, that correlates with a rise in crime.
I hope Ecuador is not welcoming more Venezuelans because the worst of the worst ones will soon be deported from the US and will inevitably end up there following the drug trail of money.
Yes antidotal evidence does affect us more and it's human to weight that more. I did that when cartels hit a restaurant in Montañita last year. I didn't look at overall numbers and trends lol.
Thanks for this week's news Mike 🌹 A question from me is: When you make/find your data, do they only include the areas where ex-pats/immigrants live or, do you include eg the Amazonas area as well as the Galápagos as well? I wish you both a lovely Christmas if you spend and, take care 🌹🌹🌹
All the stats for this include ALL of Ecuador. I only highlighted the expat areas as that is most of my viewers. But if you go back to the map of Ecuador at the beginning of the video that shows everything and you can see the vast majority of Ecuador is in good shape. You also have a great holiday and a very merry Christmas.
Thank you for keeping us informed. Wouldn't it be great if the number of homicides was a reliable number and the public wouldn't allow it to not be reliable? Unfortunately here, our mayor has said the number of homicides is too high so, we aren't going to count them all. I bet you can guess I'm really not good with this. I'm also worried the percentage of unsolved murders is up, most murders are now classified as random and if you know a police officer, they will tell you you're far less safe. My take on Ecuador crime is the big problem is Columbia produces 70 to 80% of the world's cocaine, part of that is moved through Ecuador by multiple cartels (23?) and those cartels compete with each other. It would be different if it was one group but, it is not. I do understand why you feel safe where you are and I would feel safe if I was there. I have hope 2025 is going to be the year.
Thanks for your comment. It's much appreciated. The reason everyone uses homicide rates they are considered the most accurate. It doesn't mean they are totally accurate. But the trends should be accurate if the exact numbers are not. Take care and have a Merry Christmas 🎄
@@KrisandMike Merry Christmas to you and yours. I very much feel the most important thing is to be aware of the reality you are living in and act accordingly. I believe you present a clear view of the reality of Ecuador and I could act accordingly to stay safe there more than here. 35F here and 77F there is an easy choice.
Its good the killing is somewhat down, but the levels are still abnormally high despite military in the streets and constant states of emergency. 2024 will be the 2nd most violent year in ecuadorian history 2022 was the most dangerous until 23. 24 could be the 2nd consecutive year ecuador is the most dangerous country on the continent. It is still very much in the midst of a security crisis. Hopefully things improve here soon, but winning a drug war is complicated
What do you mean it's just in the Guayaquil area? What about the murders in Ayampe this year? What about the girl that was murdered and stuffed in a suitcase in Montanita? Rumours go some cartel's live down the road from the cop shop in Olon. Why do 'expats' think it's okay to move here as long as you're not the one getting murdered. It's just Ecuadorian on Ecuadorian crime. Are 'expats' really this unaffected by the locals being murdered in their new town, as long as it's not "us" right? What about all the cases in Vilcabamba specifically targeting expats? Sure, statistics are down but this was disingenuous reporting.
I have to disagree. There are lots of examples of deaths across all countries and areas of the world. You need to look at overall deaths and put them in perspective compared to other places. I never said some of the things you are quoting me as saying. Totally out of context. I covered expat areas because that is the majority of people who watch the channel. Did you not watch the whole video? I talked about vilcabamba and issues there. Lastly, this is my home and will be. I am together with my Ecuadorian friends and neighbors on this issue and other challenges facing Ecuador. Take care.
Ummm..... Maybe watch and comprehend the information provided before making comments that make you sound like you didn't watch and comprehend the information.
@@KrisandMike At minute 3.20, 5.20 and minute 7.30 you say it is “cartel on cartel violence.” I said, Ecuadorian on Ecuadorian because that is who is in the cartel. You say at 7.30 you go on to say, “Certainly they [the public] can get caught in the crossfire but those overall stats don’t really support that being a significant number.” But that is exactly why those innocent people in Ayampe were murdered. The only thing I would claim to have quoted you on is, “What do you mean it’s just the Guayaquil area?” At minute 6:30 you say, “it’s generally the Guayaquil area you’ll see it covers the whole Province there but generally it’s Guayaquil. Up through that line that hugs the province of Manabi and Los Rios there’s a whole cartel road there, that’s what I call it.” When you mentioned the home invasion in Vilcamba it was near the end of the video and you glossed over it. Not mentioning that this is frequent occurrence in that area, even before Covid. I am not comparing Ecuador or the coast of Ecuador to other places. I am simply stating what happened here this year, that which should have been mentioned in a video titled “Crime - Is it safe here? **Detailed** stats on the expat areas.” Maybe your stats were “detailed” but obviously you forgot to mention the actual events that occurred this year that would properly inform you viewers of the real going ons around here. This is also my home and if someone else made this their home, this is the kind of news they would have heard this year. Earlier this year I was stuck in traffic just on my way to get groceries because bodies were dumped on the side of the road.. It breaks my heart that these things have occurred and I think it is disingenuous to your audience to influence them to move here without fully informing them of what happened this year. This was a rough year and I am glad the statistics show a decrease in this kind of crime. But not explicitly “reporting” what happened is why you are an influencer and not an actual reporter. You take care now as well.
Alex, I just read your last message and clearly you are very passionate about your country. I am too. When I say it's cartel on cartel I mean that. I am not sure where you live but if you are in this area I would love to talk to you in person. I stick by my reporting of the stats. They are the stats. They are the trends. But clearly you have been affected by real tragic events that I don't make light of. If you are in this area of Olon please contact me and we should meet and discuss in detail and maybe we can understand each other better. This is not the place for a detailed debate. Regardless of my opinion I always tell people thinking of coming here to do an exploratory trip to see for themselves as we are all different. Many come from areas of the states that are far more violent then most of Ecuador while others are willing to take more risk for the beautiful country you have here. I hope we can meet someday.

Now they brag about cocáin parties etc and, Danes are still being "disappeared", child--sex-trafficking from all over the world is going up and up but, should you dare taking it up with them, you will be ridiculed in the extreme.. Sadly, I could go on and on but, what exactly is a "safe" place Alex?? I know very well the country isn't perfect but, it's different to Europe and the really positive: the climate is better than the Irish in which I live.. Hence, all in all, I know what I'm choosing and, I think people who move to another country, actually know quite well what they are doing 😄 Thanks anyway. It's good with different perspectives...
