      Back in the day, there wasnt a big group of gamers. They existed, but compared to now, but if I look at statistics, in america alone, there were less gamers then there were black people. In the late 90's, that is when the amount of gamers started rising, and it still is. There is a thing called demand and supply and you can see a lot more people willing to buy games at 60$ than there are people willing to buy it at higher prices. You have an economical point where you have the highest profit compared to expenses. For games, this is at 60$. They spend the least amount of money and sell it for the most amount. Sell it for 50$, and the increase in sales wont be big enough to cover the 10$ gap. Increase it to 70$ and the increase in income per game wont cover the loss of people buying it.

      Edit: probably because ps3 and xbox 360 games ran in HD and graphically look better especially if it was the same game xbox 360 and ps3 version looked way better then the wii and ps2 version.

  • @bennyhannasd
    @bennyhannasd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +151

    Sorry dude, but you are just wrong. The price points for games was as follows in dollars of the day:
    Atari 2600: $15 when it was hot, $3-5 during the crash
    NES: $40 MSRP with games often discounted to $20 by retailers
    SNES/Genesis: $40 to $80, depending on how big the ROM was, FF2, Phantasy Star 4 and FF3 and RPGs in general were quite pricey due to their size at that time
    CD and DVD based games (Saturn, PS1, Dreamcast, Xbox): $40
    More recently games have crept up to $60 due to the collusion and price fixing you indicate, but that is actually illegal and may get the publishers in trouble if they are actually doing that (Nintendo and EA have already been penalized by the US government for price fixing from what I remember)
    Greedy publishers are trying to suck as much cash out of their customers as possible, but the reality is that the video game market is huge ($108,000M in 2017 vs $100M in 1985), and with disc based games, the cost to produce a copy is only a dollar or two, a few cents for digital downloads, versus up to half the register price or more back in the cartridge days.
    For example, the Gears of War franchise has sold 27M copies and made over $1,000M in sales. Total development for the franchise was about $90M. Thus, on that one IP, MS made $410M as the publisher and another $100M on platform licensing in pure profit (ignoring the sales through XBL, which also nets MS the retailer cut).
    The reality is that once a game makes back it's development and advertising costs, it is 90% plus pure profit, and boy do the publishers profit. And we are not even talking about microtransactions yet. Fortnite cost under $1M with a barebones team working on it off and on for a number of years, but it has made developer Epic over $1000M in less than 10 months. Sure, they have probably sunk another $10M into the game in that timespan, but we are still in the 10,000% profit margin range. No other business on the planet short of armed robbery nets that kind of profit margin.
    Most of the profits from these games goes down the publisher rat hole, either paid out to investors or sucked up by the army of corporate types working at the publisher who serve no purpose other than to crush creativity and homogenize games. One of the great things about Steam is that they have largely circumvented at least the big publishers and allow much more of the cash from sales to come back to the developers.
    If game developers and the people who worked for them were smart, they would go the way of the MPAA and the guilds around making movies, collectively forcing publishers to force better working conditions and more fairly distribute the revenue from game sales to those actually creating the content. Everyone who significantly contributed to create the Gears series, Fortnite and all the other blockbusters should all be millionaires, still leaving room for the publishers to make several hundred percent return on their investment.

    $60 is still too expensive imo, at least for single player games with campaigns that only last a few hours. I can't really justify paying $60 bucks for that, especially when it's a digital copy with zero distribution and production cost. At $20-$30 there would be a ton of games I'd consider buying.
    And for the record, it's not that I don't have the money, I live in a developed country with average hourly wage of $20-$40, it's really all about the value. I'd rather go to the cinema five times or go out for food and a couple of beers two nights, than to pay $60 for Far Cry Primal or $40 for RE7.

    • @MrAustyn88
      @MrAustyn88 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      BudgeThePutcher Games can also have 300 hours of gameplay, which is equal to $.50 per hour of entertainment. And if a game is $60 and not worth it, people won't buy it and they will drop the price. The point is, most games will sell at least a few copies at $60, just like a few cars will sell as maximum price, regardless of quality. Also, if Primal is equal in length to other Farcry games, you will certainly get more hours of entertainment than 5 movies. And if you don't, then it just isn't the game for you. But someone else will get 50 hours out of it, easily, making paying $60 well worth it in my opinion

    • @oyuyuy
      @oyuyuy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      *60/300=$0.2/hr.
      However, most single player games range between 8-24hrs of content(source: polls on howlongtobeat.com). Maybe I'm not the typical gamer, but I would chew through that in a weekend or two and a week after that I would have forgotten I had the game altogether.
      The main point though, is that I think other experiences are typically higher quality of entertainment than what can be achieved in front of a computer or TV. Thus, a simple $/hr calculation isn't fair imo.
      I also can't help but to compare it to multiplayer games like Fifa, Dota, CS:GO and PUBG which offers nearly infinite game longevity for the same money or less.

    • @MrAustyn88
      @MrAustyn88 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      BudgeThePutcher Yeah, I don't know why I divided 300/60.
      But even if other sources are higher quality than video games, which is highly debatable and varies based on the game and the alternative activity, the alternative activity is typically way more expensive. I don't buy shitty games that offer 10 hours of content. Some people might, and that is why the games start out at $60; supply and demand. If you are a gamer who values gaming (the type of person willing to pay $60 for a game you really want), you will typically know what games you can best get your value from. And there are more and more "gamers" every year, and most are willing to pay $60. I don't think going out to the cinema is worth it unless I go in the morning when it is $5.18 a ticket near me :P I am quite frugal, though.
      I don't think the cost/time argument is unfair. I expect the game that you purchase and buy is something you will enjoy very much. Hell, Fortnite is free and people have way more fun for free than going out and seeing "Solo: A Star Wars Story". A smile is a smile to me.
      Obviously going out and dancing with ny girlfriend is higher quality entertainment than playing a video game, but those are two completely different things for different times

    I've always felt like paying $60 for a game is honestly not that terrible as long as you can get in a decent amount of play time with that game. I also feel like, paying a little more for different editions of the game is sometimes worth it too. I don't see why people complain about the price of games. If I can get at least an hour per $ spent on a videogame, I think it's a pretty worthy investment. You're basically buying entertainment for $1 an hour. That's how I look at it.

    Games haven't always been "$60". I don't know when this myth got started, but it's false. I distinctly remember new games for console being about $50 in the PS2/GC era, with GBA titles usually being about $40. While games were roughly that price or higher in the past, the switch to disk-based media caused a massive decrease in the price.
    Something that people also overlook is that the vast majority of a AAA game's budget is in marketing and graphics. It's not that game companies need to stuff every game with microtransactions, DLC, and season passes, it's that it increases margins on something the game company has already ensured is in the hands of millions and millions of people. Only the biggest budget games actually need those things to turn a profit, and even then, most of that budget is pissed away on Mountain Dewritos plugs, buying reviews from game journos, and running nonstop ads in dying media.

      I disagree. Things like Shadow of War, Call of Duty, Star Wars Battlefront 2... games which are GUARANTEED to double, triple, quadruple or even more their investment - even if absolutely every single person who bought it paid only the $60 at a retailer and never paid a single cent on DLC or microtransactions, and even when you factor in the obscene amounts spent on marketing?
      They don't NEED these things to turn a profit. They never have. They WANT these things. It's greed, not need.

    You also need to consider the volume of sales has increased dramatically from the 90s as gaming has transitioned from a select few fans with there own personal consoles to being widely available across the world to all levels of society. This will compensate the increase in production expenses, but will inevitably come to an end if the volume of sales slow in its acceleration which is a possibility due to the finite number of people gaming. Contrary to that idea however many more children are getting into gaming at very young ages so this may continue for as long as the population is increasing.

    as a dev comments like that do hurt. of course we all understand prices can be high. but i do hope you understand some devs have to come round of the same wage as you. they can be your neighbor. developers dont just come out of america but from all over the world. many from china and east europe as well as south america. these are countries where there is not much money. and the money doesnt come back tk the devs unless you are at the top of the line. just so you know, creating a small indie game here in west europe costs around 300000 euros with a development time of two years in a 3man team getting subsidised and funded by the goverment living in student appartements of 600 euros a month paying of a study debt of 12000 euros simply to get the knowledge on how to do this stuff. and just so you know, the diploma is no guarantee you actually get a job or make a 'hit'. this is life of developing and we take it because we love games as much as you do. and in all honesty we would do it for free if we could. and some do.

I recall buying Mortal Kombat 4 for PS1 on its first week of release, it was well under $50. Dreamcast and PS2 consoles started off, their games were still around the $29-49 price range. It wasn't until the Xbox 360 and PS3 era that a $60 price tag became the norm.

  • @ditto_75

    • @HyperDragon01
      @HyperDragon01 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      ditto the digital content is to give publishers more money because the $60 price tag isn't enough to turn a reasonable profit. The price of new games hasn't changed since the 00s but the value of pretty much any currency has fallen. Not to mention that development costs have also skyrocketed, especially for today's gaming environment where longer more immersive games are pretty much a must.
      By today's standards games should be like $80+ (with no additional spending). But no one wants to do that, it'd pretty much be suicide. So it's us, the consumer, who has accidentally voted with the all mighty wallet for digital content.

    • @DaDARKPass
      @DaDARKPass 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      sir, what he mean was buying games digitally. also, games should not cost $80. $60 is already too much money spent of AAA games, which a lot of them aren't that good anymore. by the way, nintendo sold cardboard for $80. yes, the cardboard did sort off gave something but seriously. cardboard is worth more than a game with a lot of content that can last for years

      Actually, any assertion about price not increasing with inflation assumes both real wage growth and that the technology used to create the games hasn't seen improvement and so gotten cheaper (i.e. why don't home computers still cost $10k... shouldn't they cost MORE with inflation!?). Not assumptions I'd be confident in staking my position on.
      THEN reduce the distribution and returns component.
      In stark contrast to all of this, the Sega Genesis released for $189US in 1989. That would be $382 today ($360 in 2014). The Xbox One released for $500 in 2014...

    The creator of this video fails to mention one essential thing, the difference in games economy and the economy of other products.
    If you are selling a physical product, such as a burger for example there is a small absolute cost in developing the recipe, getting the tools needed which are also more of an absolute cost with a small quantitative cost due to wear and the cost for the materials which is usually a significant one.
    Games are software products which can be very easily be replicated with minimal costs so selling 1 copy or 100 million copies would have a neglect-able distribution cost. Instead the bulk of the cost is in making the game, which is an absolute price. So you pay 20 or 200 million upfront and then you need to make that money back by selling as many copies as possible at a highest price as possible. So you need to find the optimal relation between quantity and price in order to maximize profits.
    Due to the fact that the number of gamers has increased exponentially since the 90's that means you can sell to way more people at a lower price than before and still make a nice profit. There is also a lot of pressure on the price due to a significant increase in competitors since the 90's on the same market, especially from the free-to-play and freemium market.

I really think it's because the "age of technology" has evolved and because a game is on a new system we have to have the understanding that it is on a new system and shell out the money for it. What's even stupider is when they release a game under a special edition tag and charge 80 or 90 for it, you buy the game and there's little content on there for it warranting the special edition tag.

    • @quinnsinclair7028

      John B aka Smooth Chocolate A standard game costs 79.99 which is just under 90 with tax. The only way it’s cheaper than that is if it is a third party game or isn’t selling very well as for example the LA Noir switch port which was 59.99 to the Switch’s usual 79.99. Most of the time special editions cost more like 109.99.
      Besides that though the video seems to be maintaining that video game prices haven’t gone up in the last ten years compared to other merchandise when they most definitely have.

  • @tenaarfeiri7164
    @tenaarfeiri7164 6 ปีที่แล้ว +41

    Price of games HAS changed. It's gone up. The reason why: You pay $60 for the base game experience, the unfinished product. Then you have to pay for season pass or DLC to get the full game experience (not even expansion packs, just for content which should've been in the game to start).
    And if you want a further unstripped experience, you need the Deluxe Edition.
    All in all, games today cost $120-$230 *each.* The $60 you pay in the store is just your ticket that lets you buy the rest of the game.
    Also on the subject of rising development costs, this is provable *bollocks.* These development costs are something the publishers and developers choose to undertake because they need the fish to swim away from a player in a FPS game about futuristic war, and because they want 4K resolution compatibility and physics-enabled grass...
    My point being they are incurring these costs upon themselves for completely superfluous reasons. That the publishers and developers are unable to properly budget their games is not something which we should be paying for anyway. If they can't do that, then they have no place in the gaming industry and should get out.
    $60,000,000 should be more than enough to make a quality game that is profitable, groundbreaking & still modest in its expectations.
    It's also completely possible to make a high-quality game with high-quality animations and graphical fidelity for less than $5,000,000. I don't know the exact budget for Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, but it was not high in the millions, I'm pretty sure.
    As a cost-saving measure, they even went low-key, buying cheap props from IKEA and filming cutscenes in their boardroom the 'cheap' way. You don't need a $3,000,000 film studio to do that stuff.
    These are things *publishers and developers choose.* And it's ridiculous! We want good games. We don't want all that expensive, superfluous shit. GTA5 cost hundreds of millions to make and it's cool and all that, and it made its money back before GTAO was even up, and that was despite most of the development costs going into the technical details, leaving a mostly empty world for you to explore once you were out of the cities.
    I got more content out of Warframe's "Plains of Eidolon" open world zone than I ever got out of GTA5, and that was nowhere near that expensive to develop.

      Nope. Think about it, could you say GTA5 or Skyrim has less or more content than past games? Even without DLC, the games these days are much much more content heavy and are cheaper.
      Only reason the game companies can support the price is because there are simply more consumers (more people play games than in the past). Since there are more consumers, the video game companies can lower their price until they obtain their profit margin. They charge premium for more contents.

    AAA Games will stay at $60 price tag, but they will add in microtransactions, so you can buy some cosmetic shit for money.
    It is heading that way (see BFV) and I don't mind actually, because It is much better if there are some cosmetic items people can buy rather than to sepparate community by paid DLCs and Premium stuff.
    Of course it would be great if games which are asking for $60 didn't have any microtranscations at all, but that is not going to happen, because it is generating tons of money.

      ozmoz01 I would argue that Arizona has innovated but in different ways, such as using cheaper (not necessarily worse) ingredients and flavorings. (soft) drinks themselves are also pretty cheap to produce and sell at a great profit margin, like with fountain sodas, and for stuff like water the price is for convenience and the container. I think they're better off taking the slight loss of inflation to keep their reputation of being a 1 dollar drink.
      It's easy to make good tea or fruit drink in large amounts for cheap but it's a pain in the ass to do it every time you want something sweet tea or fruit flavored.

Believe me I do price checking for a living. Ever since Wii U and the switch came into the picture,it went up to $60. But here's the kicker,most games Xbox and Playstation games $60 but it doesn't end there! downloadable content and online membership fees to play said game. It is costly. So the make 27+26=$53 in profit per game sold to consumer.

    The thing is the RAM that cartridges used in the late 80’s-early to mid 90’s was very expensive, which is what inflated the cost of games to $60-75 US (along with specialized chips that some games came with on the NES and SNES). Once we went into the CD and DVD era of gaming, the costs dropped to $40-50 since they were cheaper to manufacture. With the additional space the medium provided along with tech advances, the games got more elaborate and more expensive to make which is why the price went back up to $60 with the PS3 and XBox 360 era.

    The price has changed in many ways though. Sales have become far more prevalent with online retailers such as Steam, and several services offer free games for about the cost of one game per year. Indie developers and smaller studios also sell games far below that AAA mark, so I think it's fair to say that the price has indeed changed. Not for AAA titles, perhaps, but in general, it's a lot less expensive to be a gamer now than 10 years ago, when it was a lot harder to find games on sale. Like, on steam sales (and other kinds of sales) you can get AAA games for $10 sometimes. I agree that compared to the cost of manufacturing the price is low, but that's also the case with movies, books, and other things we consume. This kind of model is made so that companies can break even or make a profit if their games sell enough copies, granted this isn't easy, but it would be a lot harder to pull off if games cost $3-400, which is probably why the $60 pricetag hasn't changed.

  • @tidyheidi9143
    @tidyheidi9143 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    To all the people complaining that this video didn't answer anything...
    1. The publisher wants to sell more copies so they basically force outlet stores to sell hard-copies at $60, otherwise they'll stop doing business with them
    2. No one wants to be the first to raise the standard price of their games to $65 or $70, because then they'll be outsold by all the cheaper $60 games. Basically they have to match the price of their competitors, which is every other AAA title.
    3. The developers get paid regardless of how expensive the game was to make, so they don't care how much the game costs, as it doesn't affect their pay directly whatsoever.
    Now shut up.

      PC games in general. Overwatch was $60 on Xbox and Playstation and $40 on PC. Probably because we don't have to pay $20 to Microsoft or Sony for having a console
