I have not been to Marfa since 1991 when my grandmother passed on and I flew to El Paso and drove 3hrs. to her funeral. Marfa was my second home when I was a kid. I would go there every summer by train with my cousin Johnny to visit my grandmother. We had an aunt who lived across the street from the Train Station. and we would just walk to her gorgeous home. I loved her house it had big porch out in front. Then she would take us to my grandmother's house. Her house was next to a cemetery where it was next to the drive in. When my cousins and I would walk threw the cemetery at night and watch movies from the cemetery. That was scary and fun at the same time. I know my cousins that lived there all moved to the surrounding cities. When they came to visit in Los Angeles, they could not believe how big it was and all the people. I remember they always wanted to go back home. I still love Marfa, Texas. I have great memories! I miss it.
Best line from the movie Giant was when Liz Taylor told Jimmy Dean "money isnt everything in life" to which he replied "if you aint got it, it is!"..............
Marfa was home to Marfa Army Air Field which served as a training facility for several thousand pilots during World War II, including the American actor Robert Sterling, before closing in 1945. The base was also used as the training ground for many of the United States Army's chemical mortar battalions. It has long been abandon. And BTW, I'm sure not many locals can afford to eat at that restaurant based on median income.
I found your video's about a month ago & I find everything interesting some fascinating & respectful of the cities & towns in distress. I feel I am getting a tour of the Country as I've only been to 8 states out of 50. I hope you continue with lots more videos
Fascinating! This would be on my bucket list. You asked if the various pieces are art. I think so because the artist is seeing beauty in everyday objects and placing them in a way that highlights their beauty of both form and function. I think that garage door with a padlock is a portal to another dimension (just kidding). But it might be! Yes, that is definitely an outrageous dinner tab, but I am glad that the food was good. The interior lobby of that hotel is spectacular! Another fascinating Saturday morning excursion! Thank you!
I believe it was in 2002 or 2003 I was driving a flatbed tractor trailer over the road. I had left El Paso, Texas very early in the morning and had a delivery to make in a small town along Highway 90 Southeast of Marfa, Texas. I had traveled by Marfa and was several miles out of town when looking south I noticed 3 slightly pulsing lights in the sky very close to the horizon. I had heard of the Marfa lights and my first reaction you've got to kidding me! It can't be! So I pulled my truck to a stop and I proceeded to watch the three lights. One of the lights disappeared but the other two were clearly visible with the light on the left slightly higher. As I watched the light on the left abruptly moved upwards and off to the left. Both remained stationary and I watched them for several more minutes. I am pretty sure they were indeed the Marfa lights and I added it to the list of strange things you see while driving across the country every day. I love your videos Joe and Nic but I think in this case I would have settles for a burger and fries at the local burger joint.
I really like that art out in the open and not behind doors which can seem precious. It can raise questions or a smile or you can take or leave it. But it provokes a response and engagement.
Another great video. Joe the Northwest quadrant of Marfa has beautiful homes. Jetts Grill in the Paisano has really good food also. As I lived in Ft. Davis and Alpine Ive seen Marfa Lights several times. Some say they are due to a phenomenon caused by sulphur gas. Thanks for another outstanding video of my old home area of Texas!👍✌️
Another excellent video. The art was very interesting and unique. Marfa indeed puts their quirky on. The roads are atrocious and I'm thankful for living in Comal County as they just redid all the roads around Canyon Lake. The town of Marfa and Presidio County are responsible for the roads. A very beautiful but run down place. Thanks for spending a complete video just on Marfa. The investment of your time produced a good representation of what you would find there. Thanks again for your quality entertainment.
We have been to Marfa many times. Once we each took glider rides out at the local airport. It was a blast. The pilot Bert has lived in Marfa many years. He said that Marfa is landlocked by very large ranches and essentially cannot grow beyond its limits. I love to photograph old buildings and there are plenty here and in Valentine which is 25 miles west of Marfa.
I recently turned 60 and I am in good shape. My wife and I did a 9 hour drive in a new SUV that was comfortable to a resort for a fun birthday weekend. She's the same age. After we drove home the 9 hours, we both commented on how long drives are not as enjoyable at our age. So, I applaud both of you for all the miles you both drive to video these towns. Not to mention all the hotels and all the eating out. Traveling for a weekend is still fun. But, I don't know how you guys and say rockstars who tour or professional athletes do it day in and day out for years. Maybe you should do a video on just how you plan, pack and do the traveling to make these videos. Maybe theres some tips others may find helpful.

Been to Marfa a few times. Don’t think I could spend more than a day there. Just not that much to do. You’d be close enough to Big Bend to make a day trip. That’s my suggestion.
I saw the Marfa lights back in the 80s. The viewing site just off the highway back then was a simple turnout off the road, and could have been easily missed if you were not paying attention. With the fancy layout now maybe those lights are embarrassed to come out now.😁 They were definitely not car headlights in the background. The best description to me was that the lights looked like workers on a rail line walking about the tracks with hand held flashlights on, the lights would hover a couple of seconds, then wink off, and come on again at a different location. Of course there are no tracks out there, ha ha, that's just what they reminded me of. If the lights came on because of of some gas out there, perhaps all the gas (if true) has all dissipated by now, idk. They used to be reliable, but not as reliable as "Ole Faithful." If they were truly headlights and MORE tourists are coming to Marfa then the lights should still be there unless any old road out there has been totally re-routed.
The highlight of this episode for me was hearing Mike Nesmith singing "Papa Gene's Blues" at the Giant installation. Re: The Hotel St. George...what kind of architecture would you call that? An interesting juxtaposition with the courthouse just down the street.

The absence of twenty-something Marfa-ites is indeed interesting. Maybe they lack the minimalist artistic gene or something. 🙂(more likely it's the price of housing). I saw the Marfa Lights in the early 90s, I don't remember the fancy viewing platform back them.
If you haven’t seen it, you really need to watch the movie Fandango (one of Kevin Costner’s firsts). There’s a scene where they get stuck in Marfa overnight, and the local gas station attendant tells them “better hurry if you want supper. Dairy Queen closes at 8:00.” Marfa has changed a lot since then.
Those sightings of the lights from the 1800's can't be confirmed. It is most likely they are just headlights. I remember some researchers in the 90's or early 2000s were able to determine that there were cars present on a particular highway every time the lights were observed.
Where i live now in Tennessee. The phenomenon of working a tourist destination. The workers cannot afford to live where they work. Have to commute. Still very much want to a ( Joe N' Nic dive bar saloon opened somewhere.) Haha. Nic should have been wearing boots with tap dance heels. Love the sound of boots on clicky floors. This town probably full of quirky free thinker leftist artsy type people.
marfa is fun...but at 6 hours from even Austin...is really a one and done for most people...South Padre Island is about the same travel...and they have reasonable seafood...but the hotel paisano and their history is worth it...
I bet that ribeye was awesome, that puppy look delicious, I didn't see many potatoes there that was kind of surprising, but you might have already broke into those, either way that made me hungry Joe dog gone, at courthouse was pretty doggone awesome too superb architecture for back in the day, I found it quite amazing nothing but prairie in three buildings there that old picture. Anyway thanks for another great video y'all. From the map I was trying to figure out how far it was to Roswell from there, they just recently had one heck of a rainstorm.
Outrageous is right! OMG! I've seen Marfa in several videos, one of which was done by Casey Neistat of a wedding he attended there...I remember they skate boarded down main street and there was no traffic. I've seen the lights in a few videos and you really didn't miss anything, I wouldn't be surprised to if it was just gas of some type. Nice video, thanks.
Considering it's a " tourist " town...it looks dead. Roads awful. Serious infrastructure issues. That's my visual. Didn't expect it to be that rundown. Thanks for posting this.
Census data showing population declines in cities can be deceiving. Many cities show population declines because the building stock in the central core is aging. However, these areas may actually be thriving. As these cities grow, since commute times are relatively low, developers simply buy land on the edge of town and build everything new. Due to local political structure ( city and county government jurisdictions ) annexation can be difficult to achieve so the ring around the city is nicer and the inner ring decays to certain point. Always look at the county population before determining the financial health of a city or region. Lots of cities in Kentucky and Indiana are like this. The population of the city will show a 1-5 percent decline while the real population has actually grown.
The dividing line between the White and Hispanic schools at the time was probably more based on Spanish language than ethnicity. Also I very much wonder about illegals committing crimes and then fleeing back across the border to hide for a while.
What is outrageous is you spent more on alcohol, someone have a drinking problem? Also you seen the prices on the menu before you ordered, so dont complain how ridiculous the tab was, you chose to eat there after seeing the prices listed.
Some people enjoy a fine dining meal in an interesting place.prices have gone up everywhere. Most nice steak houses menus run about 125.00 per person. Steaks alone are 60.00. Add sides and tip and you easily spend that much for two. I live in Midland and even chain steakhouses here can cost over 100 a person. You have to live a little every now and then.
Marfa has really changed in the last 20 years. Very hard to live there on 30K a year. No wonder no 20-29 YO folks. I've seen the lights and had one follow me in my car years ago.
I still remember my middle school Spanish teacher talking about the Marfa lights and her time there. Never been. Thanks for taking me. I would love for you to do a tour of SlabCity, CA.

Cranky and judge-y. What do you expect to accomplish with this comment?
Marfa used to hold national and international soaring contests. Glider pilots from all across the globe know Marfa.
yup saw about 6 marfa lights last week of october
