This building was under construction when I wintered over with the USN during Deepfreeze 1967-68. Man, what an improvement. We lived in huts, walked a block to the head (restrooms) and a block to the galley (chowhall). And keep in mind that when I say "blocks", those were McMurdo blocks. This would have really been an improvement during our year on the ice.
bobcholmes I was there, with CBU 201 Summer Support '69 - '70 out of Davisville, R.I. Our Seabee unit finished that building and also built a Chalet building for the scientists. That was also the first time that women (scientists)had been allowed on the "Ice". We also built a huge oil storage tank while there. The nuclear power plant "Nukey Poo" had an accident and we had to go back on conventional power Diesel Power Plant after the accident. We heard that they were changing the nuclear fuel rods and had withdrawn one too quickly. That was the rumor anyway. There was no further talk or explanation of what had actually happened.
I was there winter-over 73/4. The building was a sand color at the time. Also, the Nuclear plant waa being dismantled at the time. They have obviously made some renovvations since our times there!
You should show the inside of room 101. If I remember right, I was in that room with a room mate back in 1978 for the summer. It was about the size of that coat hanging area including the closet. It may have been smaller. It wasn't much room for 2 people. It would have been small for one person but it wasn't any worse than living in walk-in coolers lined up facing each other out at Williams Field. Two men to a walk-in cooler is not much room either but we had all the alcohol we wanted and they fed us good. AOEs forever.
@@ihaveseverefrootsnackism OOPs, I didn't realize I'd hit the wrong key first. I do that a lot lately but usually notice. It should have said OAE, Sorry.

Awesome Lauren! Email me ay kyleville619@gmail.com if youd like and if you have any other questions etc. When is your flight? Main body?
You said earlier that no one can stay longer then 14 months. No permanent residence/employees. With the special work you do it seems that with people rotating in and out no one would get very good at their job..(before they have to leave) just learning how things get done/work around their could take months.
It was American when I was there. The U.S. Navy and the National Science Foundation ran the town back then. The Air National Guard took over later but I'm not sure who is running the place now. Scott Base is a New Zealand base and fairly close.
This was filmed in the winter when a skeleton staff keep the place ticking over. It is basically a research station and the majority of that happens during the summer season which is when all the staff are there
My thoughts exactly. What is so racy about the craft room that makes it different from all the other rooms such that they need volunteers to make sure shady stuff doesn't happen in just this one place?
I knew mcmurdo sounded familiar,I remember in the late 70`s a new Zealand sight seeing airliner crashed into a mountain while on a tour, forgot the name of the mountain,if I remember correctly it happened around where u are at..
Liked and subscribed :-) Thank you so much for the tour ... I'm a little bit fascinated about life down there but only really just had the thought that people might be posting videos on their perspective about living in Antartica ... Just one quick question about your tour .in this video .... considering the finite resources available down there, I'm just curious as to whether all those lights are ALWAYS on or whether you just had them on while you were walking around? I get that they are fluro and probably energy efficient, but it does seem like a bit of a waste of power having them all on if it's not overly busy,,, I also thought the ice machine was pretty ironic too.! hahah
Hey K Vex, I applied recently for Firefighter. I got a email asking to reply if I was interested. I replied but I've got no response. Do you know how long it takes for a response? It's been over a week.

3 questions. 1. What is the inside temperature, in living area and in bedrooms? Outside probably like -50s? And you are just wearing a t-shirt. 2. When you buy sth from the shop, who collects the money? Where does that money go later? 3. Into the ATMs who puts the money? Once a year do officials come from the banks and bring bags of cash? Thanks for the answers in advance.

And thank you I was just thinking about cutting my beard, its getting annoying! Oh that was a little star wars ship they created for "May the 4th be with you".
being winter and this is but one small building at McMurdo where summertime population is over 5k, this doesnt cover the entire base obviously so the lack of people walking around is no shocker lol
For a settlement to be considered a city (at least in America, the nation that owns McMurdo), it needs at least 5,000 people, which means every summer McMurdo becomes both the only city in Antarctica and the southernmost city of all time.

The coat rooms and wash stations are a great idea. It's interesting to see the evolution of 155 over the years.

An ice machine in Antarctica-how meta. But where are the people? It feels like the Overlook Hotel.
Well In all reality you can leave a drink outside for 10 min and be good but some people still like ice in their drinks. I agree though! hahaha
In the winter, there is no day except on the clock. It stays dark about 5 months.

Good question. No timers, but the more we use the more power we use so they ask us to be mindful!
So can you just go down to visit the station as a tourist?
No
I wish they had positions for security or law enforcement down there lol that’s my specialty. I’m no scientist or engineer.
They do
James A Lafayette really? USAP and PAE don’t? There is no law enforcement agency that operates in Antarctica

Look at the station population he points out. Station has 2000+ in the summer
In the winter it's under 200 population. And most people there are very private and do not want to be on camera
This seems more like the brains of McMurdo, not the heart. I would say the heart is the power system generation and maintenance. Great tour. Thanks
